Walter Jones, 55, told investigators he’d acted in self-defense when Jones struck Man Pradhan in the head with a table leg., and he maintained that position Tuesday as he was sentenced to prison for third-degree murder.
The Newspaper Guild of Pittsburgh said in a news release that Post-Gazette management failed to end what the guild calls the paper’s “illegally declared impasse to contract negotiations, lift the unilaterally imposed working conditions and reinstate the terms of the previous collectively bargained contract, and return to the contract bargaining table to reach a fair contract with the 101 journalists the Guild represents.”
“The workers who produce the Post-Gazette are taking a stand against the hostile and illegal treatment at the hands of John and Allan Block,” Newspaper Guild President Zack Tanner said in a statement. “We, the workers, are standing together today, ready to fight to win back our contract and work toward signing a new collective bargaining agreement that preserves the Post-Gazette for the Pittsburgh region.”
The Newspaper Guild said it has been in negotiations for a contract with PG management since 2017.
A Salem man was arrested Sunday on theft charges after state police said they found a missing farm tractor worth $15,000 parked at his home, according to court papers. Gary A. Lauffer, 54, told troopers that he took the tractor from a nearby dairy farm to do work on his property.
He didn’t have permission to use or take it, according to court papers.
A serial number found on the farm tractor at Lauffer’s property matched that of one given to investigators by Turner’s officials. The tractor also had a Turner’s sticker on its hood, police said.
The video showing the boxes being handled is now in the hands of investigators and it contributed to the FBI’s decision to execute the search warrant at Mar-a-Lago in August, a source said.
A 33-year-old mother of four was among three people killed Saturday night when a gas-station parking lot argument escalated into an exchange of gunfire. Jacquelyn Mehalic was on her way to work as a waitress around 10 p.m. Saturday when gunfire broke out in the 300 and 400 blocks of Cedar Avenue near Allegheny Commons in Pittsburgh’s North Side, her father, John Mehalic, told the Trib.
“She was a very positive, outgoing person. She’d lend a hand to anyone,” said a distraught John Mehalic, who lives near Latrobe. “You hear about shootings in Pittsburgh all the time, and you never expect to get the call.”

PITTSBURGH — Citizens on Tuesday will start the process of closing half of its Giant Eagle branches. Within nine days, 15 will be replaced by Citizens Virtual Assistant kiosks. A second round will begin on Jan. 10.
In all, 28 will transition to kiosks and 28 full-service branches will remain within the Pittsburgh-based supermarkets.

The Allegheny County Housing Authority police chief told Channel 11 a woman was found dead inside an apartment, and they believe her body was there for about two weeks.
Allegheny County homicide detectives were called to the scene along Frankstown Road in Penn Hills on Wednesday afternoon.
Dominic Saunders, 23, of Penn Hills, is charged with homicide in the death of Jahlil Smith, 26, Allegheny County police said in the criminal complaint.
Officers responded to the 9000 block of Frankstown Road, between Robinson and Graham boulevards, at about 3:20 p.m.
Police said the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
The nature of the child’s death, as well as an identity, have not been released. A neighbor who says she knew the mother and baby says the baby was a boy.
“She came up and was crying,” Stephanie Tazel said. “I was hugging her and she told me that her baby stopped breathing.”
The Beaver County District Attorney says his office is investigating the death.
Beaver County 911 confirmed the coroner and police officers were on the scene. Detectives were called to the scene shortly after 2 p.m. Wednesday.
“We saw an ambulance go by,” recounted Anna Mabin, who lives nearby. “Then we heard the girl screaming. I just wanted to hug her.”

A man is in custody after crews were called to an early morning fire in Latrobe, Westmoreland County, on Wednesday.
Latrobe Police said the fire was the result of a domestic dispute. Dale Smith Jr., 34, faces multiple charges, including arson, terroristic threats and causing and risking a catastrophe.

Damian Rivers, 47, is facing multiple charges involving thefts.
Police said they recently questioned Rivers about items reported stolen or missing from apartments at Walnut Crossings, where he worked as a maintenance man.
Police said during that questioning, Rivers admitted to taking the items and then selling them at a local pawn shop.
Police said Rivers told them the thefts began back in the summer.
As of early Wednesday morning, Rivers had not yet been arraigned on the charges in this case.
One of the suspects wanted in a carjacking in Pittsburgh’s East Allegheny neighborhood was arrested in New Kensington, Westmoreland County.
The investigation began a little after 12:40 a.m. Wednesday after Pittsburgh police said a man was carjacked by three juveniles in the area of East Ohio Street and James Street.
Police are still searching for two other suspects in the carjacking incident.
A state legislator wants to make it more difficult for school boards to arbitrarily ban books from school classrooms and libraries.
State Rep. Christopher Rabb’s forthcoming legislation would require the Pennsylvania Department of Education and school board seeking to ban a book to participate in at least two public hearings on the book in question. The hearings would be moderated by professionals with knowledge on the book and its contents, and would be required before a school board vote to ban the book.
“These book bans are an attempt to censor educators and restrict the information and educational materials that students can have access to in school,” Rabb, a Philadelphia Democrat, wrote in a memo to colleagues.

Six vehicles along West Otterman Street in Greensburg were damaged.
Troy Konieczny, 42, is facing multiple felony charges after police said he admitted to smashing up the vehicles near his West Otterman Street home. According to court documents, Konieczny targeted the vehicles because the owners did not show up for a birthday party for his brother. Police said Konieczny claimed his brother was “Jesus Christ” and admitted to targeting his neighbor’s vehicles.
