Pat Carroll, Emmy winner and voice of Ursula in ‘The Little Mermaid,’ dies at 95

Pat Carroll, a comedic television mainstay for decades, Emmy-winner for “Caesar’s Hour” and the voice of Ursula in “The Little Mermaid,” has died. She was 95.

Her daughter Kerry Karsian, a casting agent, said Carroll died at her home in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, on Saturday. Her other daughter Tara Karsian wrote on Instagram that they want everyone to “honor her by having a raucous laugh at absolutely anything today (and everyday forward) because besides her brilliant talent and love, she leaves my sister Kerry and I with the greatest gift of all, imbuing us with humor and the ability to laugh…even in the saddest of times.”

Carroll was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, in 1927. Her family relocated to Los Angeles when she was 5 years old. Her first film role came in 1948 in “Hometown Girl” but she found her stride in television. She won an Emmy for her work on the sketch comedy series “Caesar’s Hour” in 1956, was a regular on “Make Room for Daddy” with Danny Thomas, a guest star on “The DuPont Show with June Allyson” and a variety show regular stopping by “The Danny Kaye Show,” “The Red Skelton Show” and “The Carol Burnett Show.”

Nichelle Nichols, Lt. Uhura on ‘Star Trek,’ has died at 89 | AP News

Nichelle Nichols, who broke barriers for Black women in Hollywood when she played communications officer Lt. Uhura on the original “Star Trek” television series, has died at the age of 89.

Her son Kyle Johnson said Nichols died Saturday in Silver City, New Mexico.

“Last night, my mother, Nichelle Nichols, succumbed to natural causes and passed away. Her light however, like the ancient galaxies now being seen for the first time, will remain for us and future generations to enjoy, learn from, and draw inspiration,” Johnson wrote on her official Facebook page Sunday. “Hers was a life well lived and as such a model for us all.”

Her role in the 1966-69 series as Lt. Uhura earned Nichols a lifelong position of honor with the series’ rabid fans, known as Trekkers and Trekkies. It also earned her accolades for breaking stereotypes that had limited Black women to acting roles as servants and included an interracial onscreen kiss with co-star William Shatner that was unheard of at the time.

“I shall have more to say about the trailblazing, incomparable Nichelle Nichols, who shared the bridge with us as Lt. Uhura of the USS Enterprise, and who passed today at age 89,” George Takei wrote on Twitter. “For today, my heart is heavy, my eyes shining like the stars you now rest among, my dearest friend.”

Takei played Sulu in the original “Star Trek” series alongside Nichols. But her impact was felt beyond her immediate co-stars, and many others in the “Star Trek” world also tweeted their condolences.

Parts of 3 North Side neighborhoods under boil water advisory after main break | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Parts of three neighborhoods on Pittsburgh’s North Side were under a boil water advisory Sunday after a water main break Saturday evening.

The Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority, which issued the advisory Saturday night, said portions of the Central Northside, Fineview and Perry South neighborhoods were covered by the warning. About 460 households are within the advisory area, the PWSA said.

An interactive map is available if residents are unsure if they’re affected.

Anyone in those households is advised to boil any tap water that’s being used for consumption, including for cooking, drinking by humans or pets, brushing teeth, washing dishes and making ice cubes. The PWSA recommends boiling any water “vigorously” for at least a minute, then allowing it to cool.

The advisory was made “in an abundance of caution” after part of an 8-inch water main broke along Perrysville Avenue around 5:15 p.m. Saturday, the PWSA said. The break was isolated and pressure was restored about an hour later, the authority added.

Two water buffaloes are available for those affected by the advisory. They are located on Perrysville Avenue (near its intersections with Eshelman Street and Federal Street Extension) and at Pittsburgh EMS Medic 4 (213 Lafayette Ave.).

The PWSA says the boil advisory will continue until it can confirm the water is safe by testing it.

Customers with questions can visit the PWSA’s website or call 412-255-2423.

Conversions starting in October,

Spokesman Rory Sheehan said the decision was part of a reimagination of the bank’s branch strategy across its network. Citizens has nearly 100 branches in this region.

“The site transitions are part of our ongoing effort to review customer patterns and optimize branch locations,” he said in an email Friday.

He said the kiosks will include an ATM for routine transactions and video technology that will allow customers to connect live with a banker for more complex services. The virtual assistance will be available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 9 a.m.. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays.

Citizens will convert 15 Giant Eagle branches to the new format in the fourth quarter and the remaining 13 in the first quarter of 2023.

The move will affect about 100 employees, who will be able to apply for open positions elsewhere in the company, Mr. Sheehan said.

‘Soon it will be unrecognisable’: total climate meltdown cannot be stopped, says expert | Climate crisis | The Guardian

Bill McGuire’s latest book, Hothouse Earth, could not be more timely. Appearing in the shops this week, it will be perused by sweltering customers who have just endured record high temperatures across the UK and now face the prospect of weeks of drought to add to their discomfort.

And this is just the beginning, insists McGuire, who is emeritus professor of geophysical and climate hazards at University College London. As he makes clear in his uncompromising depiction of the coming climatic catastrophe, we have – for far too long – ignored explicit warnings that rising carbon emissions are dangerously heating the Earth. Now we are going to pay the price for our complacence in the form of storms, floods, droughts and heatwaves that will easily surpass current extremes.

The crucial point, he argues, is that there is now no chance of us avoiding a perilous, all-pervasive climate breakdown. We have passed the point of no return and can expect a future in which lethal heatwaves and temperatures in excess of 50C (120F) are common in the tropics; where summers at temperate latitudes will invariably be baking hot, and where our oceans are destined to become warm and acidic. “A child born in 2020 will face a far more hostile world that its grandparents did,” McGuire insists.

‘Jeopardy!’ fans threaten boycott: Fire Mayim Bialik or we stop watching

Longtime fans of “Jeopardy!” are threatening to boycott the show since Mayim Bialik and Ken Jennings are splitting hosting duties.

On Wednesday, the beloved game show announced that the two interim hosts would keep their jobs, with Jennings hosting from September to January and Bialik taking over from January through the end of the season.

The “Call Me Kat” actress will also be the host of “Celebrity Jeopardy!” and special tournaments, while Jennings will host the Second Chance Tournament and the Tournament of Champions.

That was unwelcome news for some viewers as both the history-making “Jeopardy!” champion and the “Big Bang Theory” alum have faced their fair share of blunders — and, therefore, criticism.

The Twitter announcement received hundreds of responses, many expressing unhappiness at the news that Bialik would be sticking around.

The president’s antigen test came back positive late Saturday morning, White House physician Dr. Kevin O’Connor said.

“This happens with a small minority of folks,” he wrote. “I’ve got no symptoms but I am going to isolate for the safety of everyone around me. I’m still at work, and will be back on the road soon.”

Biden reemerged from the White House residence for the first time on Wednesday after working for five days in isolation following his first positive test on July 21.

In a speech delivered from the Rose Garden, Biden praised vaccines and therapeutics as the keys to his mild case of the virus.

His symptoms included a runny nose, cough, sore throat, a slight fever and body aches. He took the standard five-day course of Paxlovid, and also used Tylenol and an albuterol inhaler as needed.

Pittsburgh parks have depended on the work of goats to clear away difficult weeds and brush otherwise not accessible, or too tough for conventional landscaping equipment. An annual event will remind residents about the lawnmowers of the animal kingdom with GoatFest PGH.

Taking place Sat., July 30, the latest GoatFest invites community members to experience family activities, games, and more in South Side Park. Guests will also have the chance to meet and learn about the efforts of the Allegheny GoatScape goats and their protective miniature donkey, Hobo.

“GoatFest underscores the serious work that the goats accomplish,” says Kitty Vagley, a member of Friends of South Side Park, in an email interview. She adds that areas cleared by the goats are later re-planted by volunteers with “native flora.”

Pittsburghers snap up tickets as Mega Millions jackpot grows to $810 million | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Anticipation is mounting among the Pittsburgh region’s dreamers after the Mega Millions jackpot went unclaimed Friday and grew to $810 million, the third-largest in the game’s history, while awaiting Tuesday’s 11 p.m. drawing.

Robert Maury, of Point Breeze, bought a ticket from the lottery machine in Shadyside’s Giant Eagle Market District Monday afternoon, something he said he doesn’t do often.

He said he only plays when the jackpot gets over $400 million, so Monday’s purchase was something “like a treat.” Laughing at the thought of becoming rich from the jackpot, Mr. Maury said it’d be more likely he was “struck by lightning 100 times.”

Yet, were he to win, Mr. Maury said he’d start a foundation and give the prize money to people who need it a lot more than he does.
