Mega Millions jackpot tops $1 billion after no one won $830 million grand prize – CBS News

The Mega Millions jackpot has crossed the $1 billion threshold. The grand prize in Friday night’s drawing will be an estimated $1.02 billion, lottery officials said, though that’s certain to grow as more and more tickets are bought as that drawing approaches.

The cash option for that pot of gold would be $602.5 million.

No winning tickets were sold for Tuesday night’s drawing, which had a jackpot of $830 million. It would have been the nation’s fourth-largest lottery prize of all time and third-largest Mega Millions prize.

$1.02 billion, to be exact. That’s almost sure to grow before Friday night’s drawing. There have now been 29 straight drawings without a winner.

GoatFest PGH returns to South Side Park with free music, fun, and animals | Pittsburgh City Paper

Pittsburgh parks have depended on the work of goats to clear away difficult weeds and brush otherwise not accessible, or too tough for conventional landscaping equipment. An annual event will remind residents about the lawnmowers of the animal kingdom with GoatFest PGH.

Taking place Sat., July 30, the latest GoatFest invites community members to experience family activities, games, and more in South Side Park. Guests will also have the chance to meet and learn about the efforts of the Allegheny GoatScape goats and their protective miniature donkey, Hobo.

“GoatFest underscores the serious work that the goats accomplish,” says Kitty Vagley, a member of Friends of South Side Park, in an email interview. She adds that areas cleared by the goats are later re-planted by volunteers with “native flora.”

Pittsburghers snap up tickets as Mega Millions jackpot grows to $810 million | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Anticipation is mounting among the Pittsburgh region’s dreamers after the Mega Millions jackpot went unclaimed Friday and grew to $810 million, the third-largest in the game’s history, while awaiting Tuesday’s 11 p.m. drawing.

Robert Maury, of Point Breeze, bought a ticket from the lottery machine in Shadyside’s Giant Eagle Market District Monday afternoon, something he said he doesn’t do often.

He said he only plays when the jackpot gets over $400 million, so Monday’s purchase was something “like a treat.” Laughing at the thought of becoming rich from the jackpot, Mr. Maury said it’d be more likely he was “struck by lightning 100 times.”

Yet, were he to win, Mr. Maury said he’d start a foundation and give the prize money to people who need it a lot more than he does.

Pittsburgh commuting costs jump 60% | 90.5 WESA

Compared to the rest of the country, Pittsburgh drivers experienced the largest percentage increase in commuting costs over the past year, according to research published last week.

The website Overheard on Conference Calls reported that average annual commuting expenses surged by 60% locally to more than $3,000. The results show that all but one of the top 12 cities on the list of largest relative increases are in Pennsylvania or Ohio.

The study’s author, Eric Moore, said in an email that auto insurance explains much of the trend. In Pennsylvania, the average worker spent 35% more on car insurance this year than in 2021, the largest relative hike nationally, he said. The statistic rose in Ohio by 16%, the fourth-highest jump.

“The leading cause seems to be inflation, and it hit the [Pennsylvania] auto insurance rates harder than other states,” Moore wrote.

After a severe thunderstorm warning passed on Sunday morning, the National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather outlook for additional storms that could reach the region later in the day.

NWS officials said the risk remains for additional severe storms Sunday afternoon and evening, with damaging wind being the main risk.
