Adda Coffee closes all Pittsburgh locations

All Adda Coffee & Tea House locations in Pittsburgh are closed, the company announced on its social media Thursday.

The company blames monetary losses, exacerbated by the pandemic, but employees tell Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 they believe the closure is in response to employees forming a union.

“Never were we under the assumption that any of the stores were going to close, so this is really sudden and really heartbreaking for everybody,” said Chris Gratsch, former lead barista at Adda’s Shadyside location.

Gratsch said he and at least 30 other employees announced their move to unionize Wednesday night, and now they’re looking for a new job. Gratsch believes the company shutting down is a direct response.

Golden Globes 2024 live: Oppenheimer sweeps ceremony in night of historic wins

The Golden Globes returned with a blowout, star-studded ceremony on Sunday (7 January) night.

The annual, Beverly Hills-based awards show has been obscured in recent years after a 2021 Los Angeles Times investigation revealed that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (the awards’ voting body) did not have a single Black member.

However, this year, the Globes were back in their usual Sunday slot on CBS and hoping to regain viewers. Broadcast live from the Beverly Hilton Hotel, A-listers including Taylor Swift, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence and Kylie Jenner brought some much-needed stardust to the beleaguered show.

Oppenheimer, Barbie, Poor Things and Anatomy of a Fall were among the films to earn multiple awards. Christopher Nolan won his first Globe following six nominations while Barbie was surprisingly pipped to Best Picture in the Musical/Comedy category Poor Things.

Millions of dollars in upgrades coming to Westmoreland County train stations

The Pennsylvania Line – which is the train line that runs from Pittsburgh through Harrisburg, Philadelphia, and New York, will be getting brand new trains in 2026.

GREENSBURG, Pa. — Freight trains rumble through the Greensburg Station all day, but two Amtrak trains pick up and drop off passengers – about every 12 hours.

“Train 42 goes eastbound at 8:11 a.m., Train 43 comes westbound and stops in Pittsburgh, that’s its final destination, at 7:08 p.m.,” said Mark Kuhns, the caretaker for the Greensburg Station.

Kuhns has been the caretaker of the Greensburg Station for nearly 21 years. He’s a private contractor that helps keep the Amtrak station running. He’s seen one big thing in recent years.

“Railroad passenger service here in Greensburg has picked up,” Kuhns said. “I see it every day. The people are great. People love the train! That’s the way to go.’

The Pennsylvania Line – which is the train line that runs from Pittsburgh through Harrisburg, Philadelphia, and New York, will be getting brand new trains in 2026.

Also in the next two years, big upgrades are coming to the two train stations in Westmoreland County on the Pennsylvania line thanks to $6.6 million in Amtrak spending.

A total of $4.9 million will be spent on Greensburg.

“Up here on the platforms where we are, they’re going to extend them a little further, they’ll be closed in, heated, and air-conditioned,” Kuhns explained. “Downstairs will get new heating and air conditioning.”

$1.7 million will be spent on upgrades to the Latrobe station – with a big focus on becoming more accessible and ADA-compliant

“They need to put a ramp up there for people to get up to the platform,” Kuhns said.

It’ll take a few years to finish, but Kuhns thinks the renovations are worth it and will enhance a rider’s experience

“It’s great, and the upgrades will only increase the ridership, I think, myself,” he said.

Latrobe man charged after leading police on 23-mile chase through Unity

A Latrobe man is accused of leading state police on a 23-mile pursuit through Unity Saturday night during which troopers said he drove 80 mph in a 40 mph speed zone, according to court papers. Zachary Daniel Bowman, 32, was headed home from a night out

The trooper followed it on several winding rural roads into Pleasant Unity and onto Routes 130 and 982 before the SUV ran over spike strips set up by police at Route 130 and Pleasant Unity Mutual Road. Police in court papers described the SUV turning onto numerous residential streets including Dutch Hill Road, Hill Churches Road and others around Mammoth Park.

It eventually stopped on Route 130 and the driver, later identified as Bowman, ran before being apprehended after a 100-yard chase, according to court papers.

During the vehicle pursuit, troopers said Bowman drove into the opposite lane to pass another vehicle and drove into several yards. Bowman told police had been drinking beforehand. His blood was sent for analysis.

He is charged with fleeing from police, flight to avoid apprehension, reckless endangerment, driving under the influence and numerous traffic violations. He was being held on $15,000 bail at the Westmoreland County Prison.

Bowman did not have an attorney listed in online court records. A preliminary hearing is set for Jan. 8.
