18 Year Old Arrested Following Police Chase, Crash Inside Squirrel Hill Tunnel

By: Erika Stanish/KDKA-TV

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — An 18-year-old is accused of leading police on a car chase through the Squirrel Hill Tunnel and crashing into another car inside.

Police said a trooper saw a black Nissan Altima driving erratically on Interstate-376, but when the trooper tried to stop the driver, he took off through the tunnel before crashing into another car.

A witness inside the tunnel caught the crash on his dashcam and said it all happened within seconds.

“I look to my left rearview mirror and I saw a car swerve from the right to the left lane at a ridiculous speed through the tunnels. I would estimate 65 to 70 miles per hour,” Thomas Maryanski said. “He passed me doing that speed and realized the vehicles in front of me, which were about 30 yards ahead of me, started braking. Everybody started slowing down and he slammed on his brakes, but it was too late. He lost control of his car, slammed into the car in the right lane. He flipped back and smashed against the wall and came to a stop.”

Cash Jones is in jail following the incident.

SUV crashes through wall at Oakmont Bakery

An SUV barreled through a wall of Oakmont Bakery early Saturday morning, sending workers inside scrambling.

Just after midnight, crews were assessing the damage from silver Ford, which hit the building right under a bakery sign on Sweet Street.

People were working inside at the time, making donuts. One employee, who was five feet from where the SUV came through, also said he feared a few of his coworkers died after they were covered by debris.

However, he was able to get them out, and said none of them were injured.

“I knew three of our guys were down where the debris came down,” Jared Glaser, a bakery employee, said. “So I just ran over started tearing it all out, screamed their names and they didn’t answer me. So I kind of turned into the Hulk. My adrenaline rush went through the roof.”

Dispatchers said crews took one person to the hospital. There was no word what caused the crash.

Hyundai and Kia tell owners of nearly 500,000 vehicles to park outside due to fire risk

Hyundai and Kia are telling owners of almost 500,000 cars and SUVs in the United States to park outside and away from buildings due to a possible defect that can cause the vehicles to spontaneously catch fire even when not running.

The problem is that, due to “foreign contaminants,” the anti-lock brake computer control module can short circuit and possibly start a fire in the engine compartment. Hyundai issued a recall for 2016-2018 model year Santa Fe SUVs, 2017-2018 Santa Fe Sport SUVs, 2019 Santa Fe XL models and 2014-2015 Tucson SUVs. Kia is recalling 2016-2018 K900 sedans and 2014-2016 Sportage SUVs. In total, Hyundai is recallng 357,830 vehicles while Kia is recalling 126,747.
Dealers will inspect the vehicles’ anti-lock braking control module, a small computer system that controls the vehicle’s emergency anti-lock braking system, and may replace it with a new one. Dealers will also replace a fuse that controls the electric current to the anti-lock braking control unit at no cost to owners. The new fuse will reduce the amount of power going into the module.

Drivers seeing red over flashing yellow signal at Route 30 intersection in Hempfield | TribLIVE.com

Some motorists are having a tough time getting used to a newly installed left-turn-yield traffic signal at North Greengate Road and Route 30, according to social media chatter.

The traffic signal is among 11 upgrades PennDOT has made since last spring along a 3-mile stretch of Route 30 between Jeannette and Hempfield. Bronder Technical Services was awarded a $2.4 million contract for the ongoing work.

As opposed to waiting on a steady green light and yielding to oncoming traffic before making the left turn from North Greengate onto Route 30 toward Greensburg, motorists are greeted by a flashing yellow signal that is designed to let them know it is OK to make a left turn — but to do so with caution and only after yielding to oncoming traffic and pedestrians.

“It’s a mess. Went from bad to worse,” Dave Blas posted to the popular Across Westmoreland Facebook page.

Andrea Baer of Grapeville said many drivers are unfamiliar with the flashing signal, and she believes they are confused by the “blinking” yellow signal.

The flashing yield signal follows the traditional green turn signal, followed by a steady yellow light and then a brief red light. After a seconds-long pause at red, the flashing yellow begins and lasts about 15 seconds.

Colorado DA seeks review of truck driver’s 110-year sentence in deadly crash

A Colorado district attorney has moved for a hearing to examine whether a 110-year prison sentence for a truck driver who killed four people in a crash in 2019 should stand.

Rogel Aguilera-Mederos, 26, was sentenced to the lengthy term last week because of state laws that require sentences for certain crimes to be served consecutively, or back to back.

The 100-year-plus sentence was quickly criticized by some and prompted calls for a reduction. More than 4.6 million people have signed a petition asking Gov. Jared Polis, a Democrat, to grant clemency or commute the sentence.

First Judicial District Attorney Alexis King filed a motion Friday for a hearing to reconsider the sentence under the state’s mandatory minimum law.

“The law also permits the Court to reconsider its sentence in an exceptional case involving unusual and extenuating circumstances,” the motion reads.

Aguilera-Mederos, who was hauling lumber in a tractor-trailer on Interstate 70 on April 25, 2019, said his brakes failed before he crashed into traffic that had been stopped for another accident in Lakewood. A fire erupted, engulfing vehicles.

Doyle Harrison, 61; William Bailey, 67; Stanley Politano, 69; and Miguel Lamas Arrellano, 24, were killed.

The chain-reaction crash and fire involved 28 vehicles. The semi was traveling an estimated 84 mph before the crash.

Pittsburgh council to vote on whether police can make minor traffic stops | TribLIVE.com

City Council on Monday continued debate about a measure that would prohibit Pittsburgh police from pulling people over for minor, secondary violations.

Though council was originally scheduled to vote on the legislation Monday, members delayed the final until next Tuesday at the request of Councilman Anthony Coghill, who has repeatedly voiced concerns about the proposal.

The legislation, introduced by City councilman Ricky Burgess in early November, would prohibit police from pulling over a driver for minor, secondary offenses, including:

  • Having a burned-out brake light or headlight.
  • Having an improperly displayed license plate or temporary tag, as long as it is visible.
  • Having a registration, inspection or emissions sticker that is expired by less than two months

Supporters have said the measure would address a disproportionate number of traffic stops involving people of color and reduce the likelihood of traffic stops escalating into violent incidents.

Councilman Bobby Wilson pointed to statistics provided by the city’s Crime Analysis Unit that showed that in 2016, more than 80% of people who were pulled over for secondary violations and then arrested for other charges were Black. By 2021, he said, that number jumped to 100%.

“I know this isn’t going to solve the whole issue of disparity,” he said. “We should look into why that’s happening, and I think that’s a good start.
