U.S. Military Enters a New Phase With Gaza Aid Operations

As the United States continues providing Israel with munitions, the Pentagon will deliver food and other assistance to Gazans by sea and air.

President Biden’s decision to order the U.S. military to build a floating pier off the Gaza Strip that would allow aid to be delivered by sea puts American service members in a new phase of their humanitarian aid history. The same military that is sending the weapons and bombs that Israel is using in Gaza is now also sending food and water into the besieged territory.

The floating pier idea came a week after Mr. Biden authorized humanitarian airdrops for Gaza, which relief experts criticized as inadequate. Even the floating pier, aid experts say, will not do enough to alleviate the suffering in the territory, where residents are on the brink of starvation.

Pennsylvania’s path to legalizing cannabis faces numerous hurdles

In some U.S. cities, nearly every block seems to boast cannabis dispensaries fashioned with a telltale green cross symbol. Inside, many resemble the modern minimalism of an Apple Store, and customers can find strains with varying concentrations of THC, cannabidiol (CBD) and other cannabinoids, yielding the physiological gamut between calm and energetic.

Two dozen U.S. states and the District of Columbia have legalized marijuana at the recreational level to date, with Ohio becoming the 24th just in November. With the exception of West Virginia, that leaves Pennsylvania surrounded by states that have in recent years passed bills legalizing adult-use pot — and vulnerable to losing out on potential profits. Close to $3 billion in tax revenue was generated in 2022 across states with legal cannabis, says the nonprofit Tax Foundation, based in Washington, D.C.

Cannabis legislation has seen bipartisan support in Pennsylvania over the years, including from state Sen. Mike Regan, R-Cumberland/York, and Sen. Dan Laughlin, R-Erie, both of whom have sponsored bills to update medical cannabis policy.

Pittsburgh parking tickets could soon be issued by mail

The feeling of relief that drivers experience when their meter expires but there’s no ticket waiting for them on their car windshield may soon be disappearing in Pittsburgh.

That’s because the City Council preliminarily approved legislation Wednesday that would allow the city’s parking authority to mail tickets to parking violators, in addition to placing them on windshields.

“It’s not going to change what we do today,” Parking Authority Executive Director David Onorato said in an interview. “It’s going to give us another option to give out tickets.”

Nikki Haley beats Donald Trump in Washington DC for first primary victory

The ex-ambassador is the first woman to win a Republican primary, but Donald Trump is still way ahead.

She lost in South Carolina, her home state. But she is the first woman to win a Republican primary in US history.

Mr Trump however has a huge lead over Ms Haley and is likely to face Joe Biden in the November election.

The BBC’s US partner CBS reports that Ms Haley will receive all 19 Republican delegates who were up for grabs in Washington DC, giving her 43 delegates nationwide – well behind Mr Trump’s 247.

Ms Haley, a former US ambassador to the UN, won 62.9% of the vote, to Mr Trump’s 33.2%.

It is seen as a largely symbolic win, as the capital is a heavily Democrat-leaning jurisdiction, with only about 23,000 registered Republicans in the city.

California blizzard hits Sierra Nevada and shuts down roads and ski resorts

Blizzard warnings were issued for the Sierra Nevada through Sunday

While most of the storm has passed through the Sierra Nevada by Monday morning, some additional snow was expected. Scattered thunderstorms were likely and another 2 feet of snow was possible at higher elevations, the National Weather Service office in Sacramento said.

Communities across the region were digging out of the snowdrifts which had reached the roofs of some homes, and trapped people inside.

Power had mostly been restored by Monday after more than 40,000 homes suffered outages this weekend. Still, more than 7,500 customers remained without power, according to utility tracker poweroutage.us.

Record high possible Monday

Ample sunshine today as Spring has sprung with highs in the middle and upper 60s for most of us today. We will see our first 70 degree day of the year Monday with ample sunshine. We should tie the record high of 74 set in 1992 and 1996. Highs remain in the 70s on Tuesday with increasing clouds through the day. Rain looks to arrive well after sunset with rain showers around on Wednesday. We cool down but remain above normal until our next cold front Saturday brings more rain and seasonal temperatures.

Tonight: Clear. Low of 45.
Tomorrow: Sunny. High of 74 (record high).
Tuesday: Increasing clouds. High of 72. Low of 50.

Over 61,000 pounds of Trader Joe’s chicken soup dumplings recalled…

More than 61,000 pounds of steamed chicken soup dumplings sold at Trader Joe’s are being recalled for possibly containing hard plastic, US regulators announced Saturday.

The Agriculture Department’s Food Safety and Inspection Service noted that the now-recalled dumplings, which are produced by the California-based CJ Foods Manufacturing Beaumont Corp., may be contaminated with foreign materials — “specifically hard plastic from a permanent marker pen.”

The recall arrives after consumers reported finding hard plastic in the Trader Joe’s-branded products, FSIS said.

To date, no related illnesses or injures have been reported.

U.S. begins airdropping food in Gaza, but it’s a less-than-ideal means of aid delivery

TEL AVIV, Israel – The U.S. military on Saturday said it began dropping food over the Gaza Strip, a war-torn enclave desperate for humanitarian aid.

A “a combined humanitarian assistance airdrop into Gaza” of over 38,000 meals along the coastline using C-130 aircraft was conducted by U.S. and Jordanian air forces, U.S. Central Command said in a statement.

“We are conducting planning for potential follow-on airborne aid delivery missions,” CENTCOM said.

President Biden on Friday said the U.S. would carry out airdrops in coming days, “redouble our efforts to open a maritime corridor, and expand deliveries by land.”

Primanti Brothers to give free beer for Leap Day

A Pittsburgh staple is giving away free beer in celebration of Leap Day.

“We celebrated four years ago with free beer – and it was a huge success,” said Golomb. “It’s an extra day. A bonus. Raise a beer and enjoy it.”

The beer is limited to one per customer.

Visit www.primantibros.com/locations to find out where the free beer for Leap Year is available across Pennsylvania.

Our shortest month gets a day longer this year, as 2024 is a leap year. Thursday, Feb. 29 is the extra day on the calendar and to celebrate, some companies are offering customers discounts or free food.

Known as “leap day,” Feb. 29 is tacked on and becomes the last day of the shortest month of the year every four years. And beyond giving people an extra day to reach their goals, there is science behind why we have leap days.

For those celebrating their birthdays on Feb. 29, it is the rarest birthday a person can have, given that Feb. 29 occurs only once every 1,461 days.
