Greensburg could demolish shuttered parking garage near Westmoreland Hospital this summer

The shuttered J. Edward Hutchinson Parking Garage in Greensburg could be demolished and replaced with a new parking lot by the end of the summer, if the state approves the city’s request to repurpose funding.

Greensburg City Council approved an agreement Monday with Independence Health System Westmoreland Hospital to repurpose $1.5 million in state Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program funding to demolish the adjacent Hutchinson parking garage.

The 475-space parking garage, built more than 40 years ago as supplemental parking to the hospital, is connected to the hospital by an enclosed walkway over Shearer Street. It has been closed for more than two years because of its deteriorating condition.

The driver of the truck was taken to the hospital in serious condition.

A third vehicle was hit in the crash but sustained minor damage. The driver of that vehicle reportedly had no injuries.

And the Oscar goes to … a movie most people have seen

NEW YORK (AP) — The Oscars are poised to do something on Sunday that they haven’t done in a very long time: Hand its top award to a blockbuster.

After years of favoring smaller movies like “The Shape of Water” and “Nomadland, ” the clear best-picture favorite “Oppenheimer” — with just shy of $1 billion in tickets sold — is steam rolling toward the kind of big-movie dominance the Academy Awards hasn’t seen in two decades.

You have to go back to Ben Affleck’s “Argo” (2012) to find a best-picture winner that’s grossed more than $100 million domestically. Academy voters’ tastes have instead largely favored smaller independently produced films like “Moonlight,” “Nomadland” and “CODA,” an Apple release with zero reported box office in North America. Last year, the scrappy, distinctly un-Oscar-like indie “Everything Everywhere All at Once” played the role of awards-season underdog until it became an unlikely Academy Awards heavyweight.

U.S. Military Enters a New Phase With Gaza Aid Operations

As the United States continues providing Israel with munitions, the Pentagon will deliver food and other assistance to Gazans by sea and air.

President Biden’s decision to order the U.S. military to build a floating pier off the Gaza Strip that would allow aid to be delivered by sea puts American service members in a new phase of their humanitarian aid history. The same military that is sending the weapons and bombs that Israel is using in Gaza is now also sending food and water into the besieged territory.

The floating pier idea came a week after Mr. Biden authorized humanitarian airdrops for Gaza, which relief experts criticized as inadequate. Even the floating pier, aid experts say, will not do enough to alleviate the suffering in the territory, where residents are on the brink of starvation.

Pennsylvania’s path to legalizing cannabis faces numerous hurdles

In some U.S. cities, nearly every block seems to boast cannabis dispensaries fashioned with a telltale green cross symbol. Inside, many resemble the modern minimalism of an Apple Store, and customers can find strains with varying concentrations of THC, cannabidiol (CBD) and other cannabinoids, yielding the physiological gamut between calm and energetic.

Two dozen U.S. states and the District of Columbia have legalized marijuana at the recreational level to date, with Ohio becoming the 24th just in November. With the exception of West Virginia, that leaves Pennsylvania surrounded by states that have in recent years passed bills legalizing adult-use pot — and vulnerable to losing out on potential profits. Close to $3 billion in tax revenue was generated in 2022 across states with legal cannabis, says the nonprofit Tax Foundation, based in Washington, D.C.

Cannabis legislation has seen bipartisan support in Pennsylvania over the years, including from state Sen. Mike Regan, R-Cumberland/York, and Sen. Dan Laughlin, R-Erie, both of whom have sponsored bills to update medical cannabis policy.

Pittsburgh parking tickets could soon be issued by mail

The feeling of relief that drivers experience when their meter expires but there’s no ticket waiting for them on their car windshield may soon be disappearing in Pittsburgh.

That’s because the City Council preliminarily approved legislation Wednesday that would allow the city’s parking authority to mail tickets to parking violators, in addition to placing them on windshields.

“It’s not going to change what we do today,” Parking Authority Executive Director David Onorato said in an interview. “It’s going to give us another option to give out tickets.”
