Unpaid Pa. Turnpike tolls rise nearly 48% to $155 million | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The amount of uncollected Pennsylvania Turnpike tolls went up dramatically in the past year — nearly 48% — but the agency says that’s because tolls and driving have increased, not because a higher percentage of drivers have become scofflaws.

A quarterly report prepared for the turnpike showed that for the fiscal year that ended May 31, the agency had uncollected tolls of $155 million. For the previous year, uncollected tolls stood at $105 million, a $50 million increase in one year, compared to a $16 million increase over the fiscal year that ended in May 2020.

Turnpike spokesman Carl DeFebo Jr. said the agency wasn’t particularly concerned about the increase because the percentage of drivers who aren’t paying tolls remained at about 6.5%.

Report: Robbers in California steal $100 million of jewelry from Brink’s Armored Truck

Thieves in Southern California stole millions of dollars worth of gems and jewelry from an armored vehicle last week, officials said.

Brandy Swanson, a director at the International Gem and Jewelry Show in San Mateo, south of San Francisco, said the stolen rarities were estimated to be more than $100 million.

Dana Callahan, a spokeswoman for Brink’s security, confirmed the merchandise was loaded into one of their trucks following the show on July 10 and that it was robbed on its way to Los Angeles.

Swanson said 25 to 30 bags were stolen from the truck and that 18 victims reported sizable losses following the robbery.

Callahan, however, disputed the estimated figure.

“According to the information the customers provided to us before they shipped their items, the total value of the missing items is less than $10 million,” Brink’s said in a statement. “We are working with law enforcement, and we will fully reimburse our customers for the value of their assets that were stolen, in accordance with the terms of our contract.”

A gunman killed 3 people at an Indiana mall before he was shot dead by an armed bystander

GREENWOOD, Ind. —

Around 6 p.m. local time Sunday, multiple people called 911 to report an active shooter at the Greenwood Park Mall, Greenwood Police Chief Jim Ison told reporters.

Three people were fatally shot and two were injured Sunday evening at an Indiana mall after a man with a rifle opened fire in a food court and an armed civilian shot and killed him, police said.

The man entered the Greenwood Park Mall with a rifle and several magazines of ammunition and began firing in the food court, Greenwood Police Department Chief Jim Ison said.

A 22-year-old from nearby Bartholomew County who was legally carrying a firearm at the mall shot and killed the gunman, Ison said at a news conference.

“This has shaken us to our core. This isn’t something that we have seen here in Greenwood before. It is absolutely horrendous and our thoughts and prayers are with those loved ones hurting tonight,” the police chief said.

Four of those hit by gunfire were females and one was a male, Ison said. He didn’t immediately know the specific gender or age of those who were killed.

He said a 12-year-old girl was among the two injured, both of whom are in stable condition.

Police confiscated a suspicious backpack that was in a bathroom near the food court, Ison said.

Officers went to the mall at about 6 p.m. for reports of the shooting.

There were at least 433 active shooter attacks in the US from 2000 to 2021, according to the data analysis. Active shooter attacks were defined as those in which one or more shooters killed or attempted to kill multiple unrelated people in a populated place.

Of those 433 active shooter cases, an armed bystander shot the attacker in 22 of the incidents. In 10 of those, the “good guy” was a security guard or an off-duty police officer, the Times reported.

Westmoreland County police officer accused of faking hit-and-run

A police officer from Arnold, Westmoreland County is accused of lying about a hit-and-run involving his patrol vehicle, and even putting a damaged piece of the vehicle in the parking lot in an alleged effort to stage a hit-and-run scene.

A criminal complaint alleges 32-year-old Ryan Clark says the incident happened on June 21, when Officer Clark allegedly called in a hit-and-run involving his patrol vehicle at a Sunoco on Freeport Road.

Police said their investigation, which included checking surveillance video, showed no hit-and-run happened at that store. They said the video showed Clark even opening the passenger’s door to the damaged vehicle, removing a piece of the vehicle and placing it against the rear fender.

Pittsburgh police working to crack down on cold homicide cases, bring closure to families – WPXI

PITTSBURGH — Pictures; that’s what Debra Germany has left of her 23-year-old son Raymond.

“Ray would literally give you the shirt off his back and say don’t worry about, it I’ll get another one,” Germany said.

This month marks 21 years since he was shot and killed on Francis Street in the Hill District. His case was never closed.

“That’s been the hardest part. It’s been 17 years since I received a phone call from the police,” Germany said.

Answers are what she wants, along with hundreds of other families feeling the same pain.

“We’ve been looking for closure for seven years and sometimes you don’t get it, but sometimes you do, and I pray to God that we do. I miss my brother every day,” said Charlotte Paige whose brother’s murder is still unsolved.

Jimmy Paige Jr. was 52 when he was shot 12 times and died inside his Hazelwood home in November 2015. A memorial still sits outside the home as his trio of older sisters fight to close his case.

“Jimmy was a kindhearted person. He’d help anyone who needed help. His smile was infectious, just the kind of guy everyone would like,” said Roxanne Paige West.

After years of calling and waiting, these families have hope.  The Pittsburgh Bureau of Police is launching a cold case unit nearly a year after its announcement. With a grant from the Department of Justice, police are bringing on retired detectives for the unit with the first one starting on August 1st.

Police have compiled a list of cases this unit will take on and are working on a way to prioritize which ones they tackle first, and two families that spoke with Channel 11 hope their loved ones are in that pile.
