Trump administration anti-trafficking office had ‘incredible impact’ | One America News Network

The founder of a non-profit praised the Trump administration’s endeavors against human trafficking. In an interview on Friday, SHAREtogether founder Jaco Booyens said President Trump’s anti-trafficking office had an “incredible impact.”

Booyens remarked that no former president had ever created an office to specifically combat sex trafficking. He credited the “tremendous rise in apprehension” and “rescue of victims” by police to President Trump’s appropriation of funds and task forces.

Booyens argued work against trafficking is so important as children are our future.

“There’s major foul play, and unfortunately the ticket of trade is our children, I’ll go as far, it’s our future. Cause they are our future,” Booyens stated. “I mean why are we doing what we’re doing? You, me, it’s for our kids, it’s for America.”

Booyens said it’s unclear whether the strong support for law enforcement against human trafficking will continue under the Biden administration.

The mission of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Anti-Trafficking Program (ATP) is to educate on the scourge of human trafficking as an offense against fundamental dignity of the human person, to advocate for an end to modern day slavery, to provide training and technical assistance on this issue, and to support survivors through community based services.

Chicago Public Schools reaches tentative agreement with teachers union, mayor says – CNN

(CNN)Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot says city officials have reached a tentative agreement with the Chicago Teachers Union, paving the way for some Chicago Public Schools students to return to in-person learning over the next several weeks.

The plan still needs to be ratified by the CTU’s house of delegates, officials acknowledged in a news conference Sunday. The union, prior to the news conference, said it did “not yet have an agreement” with city officials, indicating it would continue discussions with its rank-and-file members throughout Sunday.

“We are here to announce the very good news that our children will be returning to in-person learning this week,” Lightfoot said in a news conference Sunday.”

This agreement was about making sure everyone in our school communities just aren’t safe, but also that they feel safe,” Lightfoot said, “And feel that their lived experiences and fears and frustrations have been heard.”

Officials for the city and the nation’s third largest school district have been at odds with the teachers union over Covid-19 reopening plans. Mayor Lightfoot and CPS officials, including CEO Janice Jackson, have said in-person learning is safe with Covid-19 mitigation strategies. But the CTU had maintained teachers and students remained at risk if they return to the classroom too soon.

BERLIN (AP) — A snowstorm and strong winds pounded northern and western Germany on Sunday, forcing trains to cancel trips and leading to hundreds of vehicle crashes. Police said 28 people were injured on icy roads.

The German Weather Service DWD urged people to stay at home and authorities brought homeless people into warm shelters amid the sub-freezing temperatures.

National train operator Deutsche Bahn said main train routes between Hamburg and Hannover, Berlin and the west were canceled as snowdrifts piled up on the tracks and power lines. Some train connections in the east were also canceled, though most of the snow came down in the northwest.

Steelers legends Bill Nunn and Alan Faneca elected to Pro Football Hall of Fame | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Legendary scout Bill Nunn and stalwart offensive lineman Alan Faneca are the newest members and will be enshrined later this summer when the Steelers play the Cowboys in the Hall of Fame game. They will be honored along with Troy Polamalu, Donnie Shell and Bill Cowher, members of the 2020 Hall class, whose ceremonies were canceled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nunn was the lone finalist in the contributor’s category this year, and his induction was a long time coming. The Steelers worked behind the scenes for years to get Nunn into the Hall of Fame.

It’s fitting Nunn will be enshrined with Shell, who was many of the great players from the Steelers dynasty of the 1970s that he discovered. It was Nunn who was in charge of finding talent for the Steelers at the historically black universities across the South, and he did it better than anyone else.

Crunching the data: Homicides, shootings on the rise in Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH — Damon Lincoln’s life was cut short. He died last December on his mother’s birthday, two days before Christmas.“A couple of masked men came with guns. Forced him inside. They started ransacking the house,” said Lincoln’s uncle, Greg Dearolf. It happened in Mount Oliver. Lincoln tried to help his mother when he was shot in the back. The family is hoping reward money will help someone come forward.

From October 2020 to January 2021, the Allegheny County Police Department investigated 37 shootings and 22 homicides. From October 2019 to January 2020, there were 26 shootings and 13 homicides.

In the City of Pittsburgh, shootings and homicides are rising significantly. This November was the worst month for homicides in the last two years.

Community groups are stepping up to help fight the violence.

“It’s not just a law enforcement issue. It’s not just an outreach issue. It’s a village issue, which is why we are working with MAD DADS South Pittsburgh Peace Makers,” said Rev. Cornell Jones.

The City of Pittsburgh Stop the Violence Initiative is a fairly new movement. Coordinator Jay Gilmer said there’s been success in preventing many community disputes that could have turned violent.

“I’m here to find opportunities for members of the community that want to be involved to play some role in reducing the conditions that make violence prevalent,” Gilmer said.

The group offers resources for victims of violence and has details on activities and initiatives to help people. Leaders say people are responding.

“I’m getting people that are saying, ‘Hey, I used to be a youth worker. It’s time for me to get back in the game.’ Now we are developing a movement, a stop the violence movement,” Jones said.

The STOP the Violence Office attempts to promote, assist and connect the anti-violence activities sponsored by the City of Pittsburgh with other governmental and private anti-violence activities and with citizens who want to eliminate violence. City sponsored activities include Group Violence Intervention (GVI), the Pittsburgh Police Community Engagement Unit, and Youth & Adult Diversion programs.  One of the principal tools of the Office is their monthly STOP the Violence newsletter highlighting the facts on violence in the City, featuring insights on City sponsored activities and community-based initiatives to prevent violence, and showing how YOU can get involved.

If anyone has any information about the shooting death of Damon Lincoln, they can call the Allegheny County police at 1-833-ALL-TIPS.

Edwards: Inmates ‘jimmied’ locks, escaped cells before mayhem erupted at jail | Law and order | stltoday.com

ST. LOUIS — A faulty locking system allowed inmates at a downtown city jail to escape their cells Saturday before freeing other “very violent people” who then caused widespread damage on a floor of the jail, including smashing exterior windows and sending flaming debris to the sidewalk below, city officials said.

About 115 inmates took control of the fourth floor of the City Justice Center, where they set fires, clogged toilets, flooded parts of the floor and caused other damage, officials said.

Dozens of people gathered to watch from across Tucker Boulevard as a group of inmates threw chairs and other items out of the building and smashed nearby windows while flames could be seen growing behind them. The scene was livestreamed by onlookers and carried on Facebook Live and other social platforms.

Inmates could be heard yelling disparaging remarks about police in what was at least the third disturbance at the downtown jail in recent weeks.

Super Bowl, Chiefs vs. Buccaneers: Market data points to one winner

When the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Kansas City Chiefs face off in Super Bowl LV this weekend, one strategist will be watching for an interesting development off the field.

According to Ryan Detrick, chief market strategist at LPL Financial, history points to better outcomes for the market should one team win over the other. He explained the coincidental correlation to CNBC’s “Trading Nation.”

This year, the National Football Conference team is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, led by quarterback Tom Brady; the American Football Conference team is represented by Kansas City Chiefs with Patrick Mahomes as quarterback.

Since 1967, the S&P 500 has risen an average 10.2% for the full year when the NFC wins and 7.1% when the AFC wins.

But, while Tom Brady has switched to an NFC team this year from AFC team New England Patriots, past performance suggests he’s not a winner for the market.

“When Tom Brady’s been in the game, 9 times  —this is his record 10th Super Bowl — the S&P’s actually flat for the year,” said Detrick. “He might be the GOAT [greatest of all time], but he’s not the GOAT for the stock market.”

The S&P 500 is up 3% for the year so far and hit record highs on Friday.

Man called one of ‘Chicago’s Most Wanted’ arrested in Pittsburgh suburb

PITTSBURGH — In 2019, media reports out of Chicago said the FBI was looking for an alleged drug trafficker as one of their “Most Wanted”. Randall Langston, 25, was arrested at an apartment complex in Pittsburgh’s Highland Park neighborhood.

According to court documents, agents with a state narcotics task force, involving members of several local police departments, used a criminal informant to buy 50 bricks of heroin from a man who went by the name “Chicago.” The operation was set up to take place at the Highland House Towers apartment complex.

On Friday afternoon, police set up a perimeter around the complex as the informant texted “Chicago” that he was parked at the rear of the building. “Chicago” messaged back that he was on his way down. A short time later, the informant confirmed to police that “Chicago” was walking toward their meeting spot.

Agents then converged on the man as he took off running. After about 30 yards, the man was tackled to the ground by officers wearing clothing clearly marked with POLICE lettering. The man was later identified as Langston.

Police said they found a large clear plastic bag in Langston’s waistband containing 50 bricks of heroin.

They searched his apartment, finding a gun, digital scales, heroin stamp bags, a black trash bag containing a large quantity of heroin and other drug paraphernalia. Investigators later learned Langston had a fugitive warrant from the FBI office in Chicago.

Langston was charged with receiving stolen property, possession with intent to deliver and other charges.

It’s not clear if Langston will be extradited back to Chicago to face charges there.

North Dakota Republicans Move to Wrest Control from Biden, Place Power Back with the Constitution

An old idea is new again in North Dakota as a barrage of executive orders flow from the Biden White House in 2021.

As the federal government in 1798 teetered dangerously close to what James Madison considered a vast misuse of its powers under the Constitution, he authored the Virginia Resolution.

The resolution affirmed that “in case of a deliberate, palpable, and dangerous exercise of other powers, not granted by the said compact, the states who are parties thereto, have the right, and are in duty bound, to interpose for arresting the progress of the evil, and for maintaining within their respective limits, the authorities, rights and liberties appertaining to them.”

Vaccine passports: Path back to normality or problem in the making?

LONDON – Governments and developers around the world are exploring the potential use of “vaccine passports” as a way of reopening the economy by identifying those protected against the coronavirus.

Those developing the technologies however, say such tools come with consequences such as potentially excluding whole groups from social participation, and are urging lawmakers to think seriously about how they are used.

The travel and entertainment industries, which have struggled to operate at a profit while imposing social distancing regulations, are particularly interested in a way of swiftly checking who has protection.

Among those developing passports are biometrics company iProov and cyber security firm Mvine which have built a vaccine pass now being tested within Britain’s National Health Service after receiving UK government funding.

Supreme Court lifts California worship bans prompted by coronavirus – POLITICO

The ruling issued just before 11 p.m. ET Friday produced four separate statements by the justices.

However, a majority of the court was only willing to lift the ban California has applied on all indoor worship in Tier 1 counties — those most challenged by Covid-19. The other restrictions remain undisturbed, for now.

Perhaps the most surprising aspect of the Friday night ruling: new Justice Amy Coney Barrett, whose conservative Catholic views drew suspicion from many liberals in advance of her confirmation last year, declined to grant the churches the most sweeping relief favored by her most conservative colleagues.

Who wants to live for ever? – Ageing can be cured—and, in part, it soon will be | Books & arts | The Economist

“Old Age Is A Massacre.”  wrote Philip Roth, long before the pandemic underscored its hazards. Even those who count as young must often watch the ineluctable drift of loved ones into decrepitude. Andrew Steele has a hopeful message for all those facing this prospect (ie, everyone). Old age needn’t be a massacre; in fact, old age needn’t even be old.

That is Andrew Steele’s thesis in “Ageless”
