Stimulus check: House Democrats’ plan would exclude families earning more than $200,000 – CNNPolitics

Washington (CNN)House Democrats have rejected a Republican proposal to significantly narrow eligibility for further stimulus payments and are moving forward with legislation that would provide $1,400 stimulus payments per person.

But the payments would phase out faster than earlier rounds and completely cut off individuals earning more than $100,000 and couples earning more than $200,000, according to the bill text, which the House Ways and Means Committee is set to debate Wednesday.
Under the plan put forward Monday by Chairman Richard Neal, a Massachusetts Democrat, the full payment would go to individuals earning less than $75,000 a year and married couples earning less than $150,000 — like previous stimulus checks. Joint filers would receive $2,800 plus another $1,400 per dependent.
It would not narrow eligibility as significantly as a Republican-backed proposal, which would have excluded an estimated 29 million households that received earlier payments.
The GOP plan called for smaller payments of $1,000 to individuals earning less than $40,000 a year and couples earning less than $80,000. The payments would phase out faster, cutting off individuals making more than $50,000 and couples making more than $100,000.

There is an alternate universe out there in which we never have to ponder, let alone read, “Unmasked,” provocateur Andy Ngo’s supremely dishonest new book on the left-wing anti-fascist movement known as antifa. In that other world far, far away, Marjorie Taylor Greene remains a nutty CrossFit enthusiast from Georgia, not a member of Congress, and we know nothing of her musings on Jewish space lasers, the execution of Democrats or “false flag” school shootings.

Pro-Trump ‘Patriot Party’ grows on Facebook…despite openly violating the platform’s policies – Mashable

Right-wing content that was previously banned from Facebook has found its way back onto the platform thanks to a simple rebranding effort.

new report from the Tech Transparency Project has found that election fraud conspiracies, such as “Stop the Steal,” and violent pro-Trump militia groups are making their way back on to Facebook under the guise of the “Patriot Party” movement.

Patriot Party pages and groups have the capability to grow fast. According to the report, one group simply called “Patriot Party” was able to amass 105,000 members in just 8 days since the group was created.

While Facebook did take down that group, the Tech Transparency Project found 51 Facebook groups and 85 Facebook pages promoting the Patriot Party that were still active at the time of the report. In total, these pages and groups currently have more than 120,000 members and likes.

The Tech Transparency Project is a big tech research initiative organized by the watchdog group Campaign for Accountability.

Psaki mocks reporter asking about Keystone pipeline job losses

WASHINGTON — White House press secretary Jen Psaki on Monday mocked a reporter who asked when workers on the canceled Keystone XL pipeline would get “green jobs” promised by President Biden.

It’s expected that up to 11,000 jobs will be lost following Biden’s day-one decision to immediately shut down construction of the pipeline that was supposed to carry oil from Canada to Texas — leaving South Dakotans reeling and 1,000 people immediately out of work.

“Where is it that they can go for their green job?” Fox News reporter Peter Doocy asked Psaki at her Monday afternoon press briefing, referring to Biden’s promise to create good-paying union jobs in the green energy sector as his administration attempts to end the nation’s reliance on fossil fuels.

“That is something the administration has promised and there is now a gap so I’m just curious when that happens, when those people can count on that?” Doocy added.

“Well, I’d certainly welcome you to present your data of all the thousands and thousands of people who won’t be getting a green job,” Psaki snarked. “Maybe next time you’re here you can present that.”

GOP Sen. Richard Shelby Of Alabama Won’t Seek Reelection : NPR

Shelby is the fourth GOP senator to announce he won’t seek reelection in 2022.

Sen. Richard Shelby, the Alabama Republican who was first elected to the U.S. Senate as a Democrat in 1986, will not seek a seventh term in office in 2022.

“For everything, there is a season,” he said in a statement.

“I am grateful to the people of Alabama who have put their trust in me for more than forty years,” he said. “I have been fortunate to serve in the U.S. Senate longer than any other Alabamian.”

Shelby, 86, switched parties in 1994 and has chaired the Senate Appropriations, Banking, Intelligence and Rules committees.

“In these positions of leadership, I have strived to influence legislation that will have a lasting impact – creating the conditions for growth and opportunity,” he said.

Mom says she came home to find 2 boys shot to death, 1 hurt – ABC News

TOLEDO, Ohio — An Ohio man charged with shooting and killing two of his girlfriend’s young children and critically wounding a third was being held Monday on $5 million bond.

Kevin Moore, 27, appeared in a Toledo court on charges of aggravated murder and felonious assault. Court records do not list an attorney for him. A judge said Monday that he’ll be appointed a lawyer before his next hearing on Friday.

Moore is accused of shooting the three boys Friday at a Toledo apartment complex where his girlfriend lives.

The children who died from multiple gunshots were 1-year-old Gabriel Phillips and 5-year-old Ahmir Phillips, according to a coroner. A 4-year-old boy was also shot at least once and was in critical condition, family members told The Blade.

How soon new $1,400 stimulus checks and other Covid aid could arrive

  • President Joe Biden says he won’t back down from sending $1,400 direct checks.
  • A minimum wage hike could be off the table in the next relief bill.
  • As Democrats press to pass more aid quickly, a final deal could come together in March, according to one analyst.

Meanwhile, another initiative, raising the $15 per hour federal minimum wage, seems to be off the table for now. And enhanced unemployment is facing a March expiration date. The House of Representatives wants to pass the coronavirus relief bill in the next two weeks, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has said. The Senate last week approved a budget resolution that would fast-track the additional Covid relief with a 51-50 vote (with the Vice President being the tie-breaker.)

Myanmar junta imposes curfew, meeting bans as protests swell

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) — Myanmar’s new military rulers on Monday signaled their intention to crack down on opponents of their takeover, issuing decrees that effectively banned peaceful public protests in the country’s two biggest cities.

The restrictive measures were ordered after police fired water cannons at hundreds of protesters in the Myanmar capital, Naypyitaw, who were demanding the military hand power back to elected officials. It was just one of many demonstrations around the country.

Rallies and gatherings of more than five people, along with motorized processions, were banned, and an 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. curfew was imposed for areas of Yangon and Mandalay, the country’s first- and second-biggest cities, where thousands of people have been demonstrating since Saturday.

Protesters in Yangon rallied Monday at a major downtown intersection raising three-finger salutes that are symbols of resistance and carrying placards saying, “Reject the military coup” and “Justice for Myanmar.”

There were also demonstrations in towns in the north, southeast and east of the country.

The decrees enabling the new restrictive measures were issued on a township-by-township basis, and were expected to be extended to other areas as well. They say they were issued in response to people carrying out unlawful actions that harm the rule of law, a reference to the protests.

The growing wave of defiance — particularly in Naypyitaw, where such protests are unusual — was striking in a country where demonstrations have been met with severe force in the past. That resistance was happening in Naypyitaw, whose population includes many civil servants and their families, spoke to the level of anger among people who had only begun to taste democracy in recent years after five decades of military rule.

“We do not want the military junta,” said Daw Moe, a protester in Yangon. “We never ever wanted this junta. Nobody wants it. All the people are ready to fight them.”

(Shaban Athuman/Staff Photographer)His family and a spokesperson confirmed Wright’s death due to the coronavirus Monday morning. The Republican congressman, who was reelected in November, also had been battling lung cancer.

“Congressman Wright will be remembered as a constitutional conservative. He was a statesman, not an ideologue,” according to a statement released by Wright’s office. “Ron and Susan dedicated their lives to fighting for individual freedom, Texas values, and above all, the lives of the unborn. As friends, family, and many of his constituents will know, Ron maintained his quick wit and optimism until the very end. Despite years of painful, sometimes debilitating treatment for cancer, Ron never lacked the desire to get up and go to work, to motivate those around him, or to offer fatherly advice.”

According to the statement, Wright had been keeping a vigorous work scheduled before contracting the virus. Two weeks ago Wright and his wife, Susan, were admitted to Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas because of COVID-19 side effects.

Following the first discovery, monoliths appeared in Romania, Spain, Netherlands, California, and even the Isle of Wight. Artists began taking credit for the monoliths, but conspiracy theorists’ tongues are wagging once again after a new monolith appeared in Turkey.

Michigan man killed after cannon explodes at baby shower | Fox News

Michigan man was killed Saturday night after he was struck by shrapnel from an exploding cannon at a baby shower in the state, police said, according to reports.

A Genesee County homeowner fired the small cannon-type device in the backyard around 7:30 p.m., to celebrate the baby’s pending arrival, Michigan State Police said in a news release.

The cannon blew up upon firing, spreading metal shrapnel that hit the victim, Evan Thomas Silva, 26, three parked cars, and the garage where the baby shower was held, police said, according to MLive.com.

Silva, who was standing about 10 to 15 feet from the explosion, was taken to Hurley Medical Center in Flint, Mich., where he later died from his injuries, police said. He was one of about five people outside the residence at the time of the explosion, and was the only one to be hit by shrapnel, MLive.com reported.The cannon didn’t contain any projectiles, but it was suspected the gunpowder loaded into the device “caused the cannon to fracture,” authorities said. ”

The homeowner had purchased the cannon at an auction prior to the event and had fired the cannon several times prior. The cannon is designed to create a big flash, a loud noise, and create smoke,” the release added, according to ABC News.

Amanda Gorman’s Super Bowl poem: Read it here – CNN

For Amanda Gorman, Inauguration Day was just the beginning. Now, she can cross the Super Bowl off her bucket list, too.

Here’s her poem from Sunday evening:
Today we honor our three captains
For their actions and impact in
A time of uncertainty and need.
They’ve taken the lead,
Exceeding all expectations and limitations,
Uplifting their communities and neighbors
As leaders, healers and educators.
James has felt the wounds of warfare,
But this warrior still shares
His home with at-risk kids.
During Covid, he’s even lent a hand
Live-streaming football for family and fans.
Trimaine is an educator who works nonstop,
Providing his community with hotspots,
Laptops and tech workshops,
So his students have all the tools
They need to succeed in life and in school.
Suzie is the ICU nurse manager at a Tampa hospital.
Her chronicles prove that even in tragedy, hope is possible.
She lost her grandmothers to the pandemic,
And fights to save other lives in the ICU battle zone,
Defining the front line heroes risking their lives for our own.
Let us walk with these warriors,
Charge on with these champions,
And carry forth the call of our captains!
We celebrate them by acting
With courage and compassion,
By doing what is right and just.
For while we honor them today,
It is they who every day honor us.

Trump administration anti-trafficking office had ‘incredible impact’ | One America News Network

The founder of a non-profit praised the Trump administration’s endeavors against human trafficking. In an interview on Friday, SHAREtogether founder Jaco Booyens said President Trump’s anti-trafficking office had an “incredible impact.”

Booyens remarked that no former president had ever created an office to specifically combat sex trafficking. He credited the “tremendous rise in apprehension” and “rescue of victims” by police to President Trump’s appropriation of funds and task forces.

Booyens argued work against trafficking is so important as children are our future.

“There’s major foul play, and unfortunately the ticket of trade is our children, I’ll go as far, it’s our future. Cause they are our future,” Booyens stated. “I mean why are we doing what we’re doing? You, me, it’s for our kids, it’s for America.”

Booyens said it’s unclear whether the strong support for law enforcement against human trafficking will continue under the Biden administration.

The mission of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Anti-Trafficking Program (ATP) is to educate on the scourge of human trafficking as an offense against fundamental dignity of the human person, to advocate for an end to modern day slavery, to provide training and technical assistance on this issue, and to support survivors through community based services.

Chicago Public Schools reaches tentative agreement with teachers union, mayor says – CNN

(CNN)Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot says city officials have reached a tentative agreement with the Chicago Teachers Union, paving the way for some Chicago Public Schools students to return to in-person learning over the next several weeks.

The plan still needs to be ratified by the CTU’s house of delegates, officials acknowledged in a news conference Sunday. The union, prior to the news conference, said it did “not yet have an agreement” with city officials, indicating it would continue discussions with its rank-and-file members throughout Sunday.

“We are here to announce the very good news that our children will be returning to in-person learning this week,” Lightfoot said in a news conference Sunday.”

This agreement was about making sure everyone in our school communities just aren’t safe, but also that they feel safe,” Lightfoot said, “And feel that their lived experiences and fears and frustrations have been heard.”

Officials for the city and the nation’s third largest school district have been at odds with the teachers union over Covid-19 reopening plans. Mayor Lightfoot and CPS officials, including CEO Janice Jackson, have said in-person learning is safe with Covid-19 mitigation strategies. But the CTU had maintained teachers and students remained at risk if they return to the classroom too soon.

BERLIN (AP) — A snowstorm and strong winds pounded northern and western Germany on Sunday, forcing trains to cancel trips and leading to hundreds of vehicle crashes. Police said 28 people were injured on icy roads.

The German Weather Service DWD urged people to stay at home and authorities brought homeless people into warm shelters amid the sub-freezing temperatures.

National train operator Deutsche Bahn said main train routes between Hamburg and Hannover, Berlin and the west were canceled as snowdrifts piled up on the tracks and power lines. Some train connections in the east were also canceled, though most of the snow came down in the northwest.

Steelers legends Bill Nunn and Alan Faneca elected to Pro Football Hall of Fame | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Legendary scout Bill Nunn and stalwart offensive lineman Alan Faneca are the newest members and will be enshrined later this summer when the Steelers play the Cowboys in the Hall of Fame game. They will be honored along with Troy Polamalu, Donnie Shell and Bill Cowher, members of the 2020 Hall class, whose ceremonies were canceled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nunn was the lone finalist in the contributor’s category this year, and his induction was a long time coming. The Steelers worked behind the scenes for years to get Nunn into the Hall of Fame.

It’s fitting Nunn will be enshrined with Shell, who was many of the great players from the Steelers dynasty of the 1970s that he discovered. It was Nunn who was in charge of finding talent for the Steelers at the historically black universities across the South, and he did it better than anyone else.

Crunching the data: Homicides, shootings on the rise in Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH — Damon Lincoln’s life was cut short. He died last December on his mother’s birthday, two days before Christmas.“A couple of masked men came with guns. Forced him inside. They started ransacking the house,” said Lincoln’s uncle, Greg Dearolf. It happened in Mount Oliver. Lincoln tried to help his mother when he was shot in the back. The family is hoping reward money will help someone come forward.

From October 2020 to January 2021, the Allegheny County Police Department investigated 37 shootings and 22 homicides. From October 2019 to January 2020, there were 26 shootings and 13 homicides.

In the City of Pittsburgh, shootings and homicides are rising significantly. This November was the worst month for homicides in the last two years.

Community groups are stepping up to help fight the violence.

“It’s not just a law enforcement issue. It’s not just an outreach issue. It’s a village issue, which is why we are working with MAD DADS South Pittsburgh Peace Makers,” said Rev. Cornell Jones.

The City of Pittsburgh Stop the Violence Initiative is a fairly new movement. Coordinator Jay Gilmer said there’s been success in preventing many community disputes that could have turned violent.

“I’m here to find opportunities for members of the community that want to be involved to play some role in reducing the conditions that make violence prevalent,” Gilmer said.

The group offers resources for victims of violence and has details on activities and initiatives to help people. Leaders say people are responding.

“I’m getting people that are saying, ‘Hey, I used to be a youth worker. It’s time for me to get back in the game.’ Now we are developing a movement, a stop the violence movement,” Jones said.

The STOP the Violence Office attempts to promote, assist and connect the anti-violence activities sponsored by the City of Pittsburgh with other governmental and private anti-violence activities and with citizens who want to eliminate violence. City sponsored activities include Group Violence Intervention (GVI), the Pittsburgh Police Community Engagement Unit, and Youth & Adult Diversion programs.  One of the principal tools of the Office is their monthly STOP the Violence newsletter highlighting the facts on violence in the City, featuring insights on City sponsored activities and community-based initiatives to prevent violence, and showing how YOU can get involved.

If anyone has any information about the shooting death of Damon Lincoln, they can call the Allegheny County police at 1-833-ALL-TIPS.
