Officer who responded to January 6 attack is third to die by suicide – CNNPolitics

(CNN)A DC police officer who responded to the US Capitol insurrection has died by suicide, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

“Officer Gunther Hashida, assigned to the Emergency Response Team within the Special Operations Division, was found deceased in his residence on Thursday, July 29,” department spokesperson Kristen Metzger told CNN in a statement.
Hashida joined the Metropolitan Police Department in 2003 and responded to the Capitol on January 6, Metzger said.
“We are grieving as a Department and our thoughts and prayers are with Officer Hashida’s family and friends,” Metzger said.
This is the third known suicide of an officer who responded to the Capitol during the attack, and it is the second known suicide by a DC officer specifically.
Metropolitan Police Officer Jeffrey Smith, a 12-year veteran of the force, and US Capitol Police Officer Howard Liebengood, a 16-year Capitol Police veteran, also responded to the insurrection and later died by suicide. A recent Senate report into the security failures of the day lists both Smith and Liebengood among those who “ultimately lost their lives” following the attack.
Another Capitol Police officer, Brian D. Sicknick, suffered strokes and died of natural causes one day after responding to the attack, Washington DC’s chief medical examiner determined in April.
The Justice Department has charged more than 550 people in connection with the insurrection, according to CNN’s latest tally, and the attack is at the center of a high-profile House select committee investigation.
During a hearing before the panel last month, Capitol Police Officer Harry Dunn delivered an emotional plea to officers who defended the Capitol to seek out professional help if they need it.
“I want to take this moment and speak to my fellow officers about the emotions they are continuing to experience from the events of January 6. There is absolutely nothing wrong with seeking professional counseling,” Dunn said.
“What we all went through that day was traumatic, and if you are hurting, please take advantage of the counseling services that are available to us.”

Pittsburgh U-Haul employee dies after customer dispute ends in shooting

A Pittsburgh U-Haul employee is dead after a customer shot him during a dispute last week.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s office reports Jacob Jaillet, 21, of Pittsburgh, died at a hospital Sunday around 11:46 a.m.

According to the criminal complaint, Jaillet was showing a truck to a man police identify as the shooting suspect — Braijon Burton, 21, of Pittsburgh at the U-Haul located on the 1000 block of Washington Boulevard.”

Burton stated that at that moment he said to himself, ‘I’m taking this truck’ and Burton said that he shot the guy,” according to the paperwork. Police say Burton shot the victim in the neck and was initially reported to be in critical condition.

Burton then stole a U-Haul vehicle and fled the scene, according to police. Burton was then pursued by police on Route 28 near the 31st Street Bridge where he was then taken into custody.

An employee at the U-Haul center spoke with Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 reporter Kylie Walker and said the victim is a co-worker and explained what led up to the shooting.”

The dude wanted the truck for too long. We couldn’t give it to him. He was mad about it so he shot my co-worker and ran off with the truck,” the employee said.

Burton is currently being held in the Allegheny County Jail.

Deadly fentanyl overdoses mount in Pittsburgh region | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

At least a dozen times this year, medical rescue workers in the county responded to four or more deadly overdoses in a single day, the vast majority involving fentanyl.

In the small working-class city of Clairton, at least six people have died this year in overdoses involving the drug — two on the same street, records show.

The rise in deaths has prompted public officials to call for efforts from law enforcement and other government agencies to battle the crisis, including the legalization in Pennsylvania of the distribution of fentanyl strips — a tool that can alert people to the presence of the drug.

Wildfires in southern Turkey leave 3 dead, 58 hospitalized

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkish authorities on Thursday began investigating the cause of a string of forest fires in Turkey’s Mediterranean and southern Aegean regions, including two near the coastal resort town of Manavgat that killed three people and sent over 50 others to the hospital as homes burned down.

A wildfire that broke out Wednesday in Manavgat, in Antalya province, and was fanned by strong winds and scorching temperatures, was largely contained, Agriculture and Forestry Minister Bekir Pakdemirli said. But another fire that started overnight and swept through the district of Akseki, 50 kilometers (30 miles) north, kept firefighters engaged.

Three people were killed in those fires, and authorities evacuated nearly 20 neighborhoods or villages.

The Antalya region is a popular vacation destination for tourists from Russia and other parts of Europe.

Fires also broke out Thursday in 16 other locations, including in the Icmeler region, close to the resort of Marmaris, 320 kilometers (200 miles) west of Antalya, that briefly threatened holiday homes and hotels. A hotel in the Aegean beach resort of Guvercinlik, near the town of Bodrum, was also evacuated, Pakdemirli said.

1 person dead after shooting on Pittsburgh’s South Side near youth football game – WPXI

PITTSBURGH — There has been an increase in violence in recent months in the South Side, including shootings and fights. Also, as more people return to the area following the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions, sidewalks have become more crowded and more people are walking into streets, leading to some instances in which people have been hit by cars.

>>RELATED STORY: Community group working to understand what’s behind recent gun violence across Pittsburgh

Police are now investigating a deadly shooting in the South Side Slopes, hours after a violent night rocked a different part of the neighborhood.

According to police, after the shooting, a friend of the victim started to drive them to the hospital but stopped after seeing police patrolling the area. The friend then asked the officers for help.

Unfortunately, after they tried to render aid, the victim died. The Pittsburgh police chief had this to say.

“It’s concerning with the level of violence that’s going on in the city of Pittsburgh. The number of people carrying guns and here, once again, area kids are playing football, and to have someone shot is unacceptable. This has to stop,” said Scott Schubert.

Opinion: Officer who shot Ashli Babbitt wasn’t assigned to any Congress member’s security

A Facebook post claimed that an officer involved in the killing of a woman during the Jan. 6 capitol riots was “a bodyguard to a high-ranking Democrat in Congress.” That’s false.

Facebook post: A bodyguard of a high-ranking Democrat in Congress fired the shot that killed Ashli Babbitt on Jan. 6.

PolitiFact’s ruling: False

Here’s why: There are plenty of questions still unanswered about the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. For some Republicans, that includes identifying who shot one person who stormed the Capitol that day. In a recent email to supporters, former President Donald Trump asked, “Who shot Ashli Babbitt?”

Trump brought up the question again on July 11 during a discussion with Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures” host Maria Bartiromo. But this time, he had a theory.

“I will tell you they know who shot Ashli Babbitt. They’re protecting that person,” Trump said in the phone interview. “I’ve heard, also, that it was the head of security for a certain high official — a Democrat — and we’ll see, because it’s going to come out. It’s going to come out.”

More:Capitol Police officer who shot Ashli Babbitt during Jan. 6 riot will not face charges, DOJ says

The comments set off a frenzy of social media posts, like this one shared on Facebook, that claim the high-ranking official the officer was assigned to was either Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer or House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

The photo in the post shows a person in a suit wearing a face mask and holding a handgun in his right hand. By the background seen in the photo, he appears to be pictured in the House of Representatives. “He shot Ashli Babbitt,” the caption reads. “Pelosi’s or Schumer’s personal bodyguard. Prove me wrong!”

The officer involved was placed on leave while Babbitt’s death was being investigated by D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department, which shares jurisdiction with the Capitol Police.

The investigation concluded in April, and the Justice Department announced that it would not be pursuing criminal charges against the officer involved.

“Officials examined video footage posted on social media, statements from the officer involved and other officers and witnesses to the events, physical evidence from the scene of the shooting, and the results of an autopsy,” the department said in a statement. “Based on that investigation, officials determined that there is insufficient evidence to support a criminal prosecution.”

A Pelosi spokesperson declined to comment for this story, deferring to the Capitol Police statement. Schumer’s office did not respond to an email seeking comment.

Our ruling

Because official sources have not identified the officer involved in the shooting, we cannot verify or debunk any names being thrown around on the internet. But claims that the officer worked for Schumer or Pelosi are contradicted by the Capitol Police. They say that the person who fired the shot was not assigned to any Congress member’s security detail. We rate this post False.

Deadly flooding hits central China, affecting tens of millions | China | The Guardian

Unusually heavy rains and massive flooding have hit China’s Henan province, bursting the banks of rivers, overwhelming the public transport system and upending the lives of tens of millions.

Twelve people have been killed in the provincial capital, Zhengzhou, where more than 20cm (7.8in) of rain fell in one hour on Tuesday. About 100,000 people have been moved to shelters, state media Xinhua reported on Wednesday, citing local government. The rainfall shut the city’s subway system, leaving passengers trapped in waist-high water.

From Saturday to Tuesday, 3,535 weather stations in Henan, one of China’s most populous provinces with 94 million people, reported rainfall exceeding 5cm. Among the stations 1,614 registered levels above 10cm and 151 above 25cm, the authorities said.

Footage on China’s social media show the world-renowned Shaolin Temple, known for martial arts, as well as other cultural sites, badly affected. Hundreds of trapped residents in Henan called for help online as flooding cut electricity to their homes.

3 dead, 2 taken to hospital in suspected carbon monoxide exposure during Michigan music festival, police say – CNN

Three men were found dead inside a travel trailer Saturday at a country music festival in southern Michigan in what police believe is a case of carbon monoxide exposure, officials said.

Two other men inside the trailer were taken to a hospital after first responders found them unresponsive and performed CPR at the scene, the Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
The pair were in critical condition and being treated for acute carbon monoxide poisoning, police said.
Emergency officials responded to the trailer after receiving a call around 1:27 pm Saturday regarding unresponsive people at a campground in Woodstock Township during the Faster Horses Festival, a multi-day country music festival.
“The caller was a friend of the five males and became concerned when he had not heard from them,” police said.
Police are investigating the “tragic incident” as suspected exposure to carbon monoxide from a generator that was located near the travel trailer.
“First responders stress the importance of keeping generators away from camping areas, tents, travel trailers, etc. as well as exhaust fumes from running vehicles,” police said.

Search efforts have accelerated in the last week after the demolition of a remaining structure that prevented teams from accessing some of the debris.

Confirmed deaths rose to 90 in the recovery efforts in the Miami Beach-area condo building collapse as crews continue to sift through the debris more than two weeks after the Champlain Towers South fell in the middle of the night.

At least 71 of the victims have been properly identified with next-of-kin notifications provided to their families, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said Sunday morning. Search efforts have accelerated in the last week after officials demolished a still-standing section of the building that prevented teams from accessing a portion of the debris pile.

1 dead, another injured after crane tips over in Philadelphia

One man was pronounced dead and another injured after a crane toppled over at a Philadelphia construction site.

One man was pronounced dead and another injured after a crane toppled over at a Philadelphia construction site. Police said the accident happened Tuesday night in the University City section.

The crane reportedly fell over with one worker inside the cab and another trapped under the equipment. According to fire officials, heavy equipment was being moved off a tractor-trailer to a job site when the crane fell.

One fire commissioner said it helped emergency teams that the event happened at night due to high traffic in the area during the day. However, he said “there were two individuals that were hurt here, that’s still tragic in the same.”

Both men were eventually taken to the hospital where one man was pronounced dead and the other’s condition is currently unknown. The area remained closed on Wednesday as investigators evaluated the scene.

Japanese landslide kills 3 people and leaves another 80 missing

Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said workers were doing everything to try “to rescue those who may be buried under the mud.”

Rescue workers slogged through mud and debris Monday looking for dozens feared missing after a giant landslide ripped through a Japanese seaside resort town, killing at least three people.

Eighty people were still unaccounted for, according to Shizuoka prefectural disaster management official Takamichi Sugiyama. Officials were preparing to release their names, hoping to reach some who might not have been caught in the landslide.

Initially, 147 of those people were unreachable, but that number was revised downward after city officials confirmed some had safely evacuated or were away when the disaster struck, it said.

The disaster is an added trial as authorities prepare for the Tokyo Olympics, due to start in less than three weeks, while Japan is still in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga told reporters that rescue workers, including police, self-defense troops, firefighters and coast guard personnel, are doing their utmost “to rescue those who may be buried under the mud and waiting for help as soon as possible.”

Violent July Fourth results in dozens shot, several killed | Fox News

Americans made up for missed July Fourth celebrations in 2020 by going all out this year – and the holiday weekend also saw a spike in shootings and assaults across the country over last year.

Major cities were already braced for gun violence as shootings had been on the rise over the past few weeks, but nearly 100 people were shot across the country during the holiday weekend.

New York City alone saw 26 people shot from Friday through Sunday, with two of them resulting in deaths.

Five people were shot in the Bronx Saturday at around 9 p.m., and 10 more people were shot Sunday, the New York Daily News reported.

A large brawl between as many as 50 adolescents in Atlanta resulted at least one death. Police sought footage of the fight to find leads on the cause of the fight and the death. A 14-year-old boy died, and police arrested a 17-year-old in possession of two guns, Fox 5 Atlanta reported.

A shooting in Fort Worth, Texas, left eight people wounded shortly after 1:30 a.m. Sunday when someone fired multiple shots near a car wash, with some of the victims returning fire. Police said that the victims were taken to hospitals and are in stable condition. No suspects are in custody.

Two people died and three others were wounded in a shooting in downtown Cincinnati when a suspect opened fire during a fireworks display. The identities of the victims was not made public, and police released no information about the suspect.

Police were not exempt from the violence, either: Two Chicago officers were shot and wounded around 1:45 a.m. Monday. One officer was struck in the foot while the other was struck in the thigh. The officers went to hospital as a precaution, as their injuries were not life-threatening.
