Large sinkhole forces McKeesport road to close

The sinkhole opened up on Versailles Avenue.

The roadway is currently closed between Union Avenue and Coursin Street, near the McKeesport Presbyterian Church.

The city’s mayor said it’s believed that the sink hole is believed to be caused by a lateral sewage line owned by the church. Officials also believe the lines to be insured.

“We are working with the church to address the true issue at hand, which is coming from their property, in order for us to be able to fix the road permanently,” Mayor Michael Cherepko said. “We are all working to remedy this situation as quickly and safely as possible.”

There is no word on how long the section of road will be closed.

Neighbors said the hole has been an ongoing issue for at least the last several months.

National Strawberry Day Is February 27th This Year

This juicy red fruit pairs well with chocolate, whipped cream, and champagne. Perfect for summer picnics and romantic evenings.

National Strawberry Day was created to celebrate those little red fruits bursting with sweet perfection! A gift from Chile in the 1700s, garden strawberry plants made their way to North America in the 1750s. The plant is fairly easy to grow and doesn’t seem adverse to flourishing anywhere in the world. If you’d like your own homegrown strawberries this summer, make sure your plant has full sun and sandy soil – and your dogs don’t eat off all the berries before you can pick a few.

11 Investigates the disappearance of Cherrie Mahan

BUTLER COUNTY, Pa. — It’s been 39 years since 8-year-old Cherrie Mahan vanished after getting off a school bus in rural Butler County.

Her mysterious disappearance has been the subject of intense local and national coverage for nearly four decades.

Chief Investigator Rick Earle has covered the case for 30 years now, even traveling to Michigan to track down a lead.

Earle recently spoke with Cherrie’s mother and investigators.

Even after all these years, Janice McKinney is still optimistic that one day she’ll find out what happened to her only daughter.

McKinney, who also has a son, hasn’t given up hope.

“Every time I come back here, I hope somebody sees me and then somebody makes a phone call and just, you know, cleanses their heart to say, ‘Yep, I did this,’ or, ‘I know what happened to her,’” McKinney said.

Cherrie Ann Mahan was an eight-year-old American girl who disappeared on February 22, 1985, after disembarking a school bus approximately fifty feet from the base of the driveway to her home in rural Winfield Township, Butler County, Pennsylvania. She was declared legally dead in November 1998.

US returns to lunar surface for first time in over 50 years: ‘Welcome to the moon’

Intuitive Machines’ spacecraft Odysseus lands after a 73-minute descent, touching down near moon’s south pole

The statement on X said mission managers were “working to downlink the first images from the lunar surface”.

The so-called “soft landing” on Thursday, which Steve Altemus, the company’s founder, had given only an 80% chance of succeeding, was designed to open a new era of lunar exploration as Nasa works towards a scheduled late-2026 mission to send humans back there.

“Welcome to the moon,” Altemus said when touchdown when the 5.23pm touchdown was eventually confirmed, after about 10 minutes in which Odysseus was out of contact.

It was the first time any US-built spacecraft had landed on the moon since Nasa’s most recent crewed visit, the Apollo 17 mission in December 1972, and the first visit by commercial vehicle following last month’s failure of Peregrine One, another partnership between the space agency and a private company, Astrobotic.

“Today, for the first time in more than a half century, the US has returned to the moon. Today, for the first time in the history of humanity, a commercial company, an American company, launched and led the voyage up there,” Bill Nelson, the Nasa administrator, said.

CIA AND BIDEN CLAIM ASSANGE IS HACKER

Feds: South Side building owner set property on fire to avoid sheriff’s sale

According to the now unsealed federal indictment, Prasad Margabandhu is charged with conspiracy to maliciously destroy property by fire as well as mail and bankruptcy fraud.

“Prasad is a known actor in our district here,” said Pittsburgh councilperson Bob Charland. “He owns a handful of properties both within the southside, Arlington and Oakland as well as outside of the district. I know he owns properties in Carrick as well. He is one of the worst property owners in the city of Pittsburgh, probably the worst,” said Charland.

The June 2022 fire at the vacant building along East Carson Street grew to four alarms. At the time, a Pittsburgh police spokesperson said the fire was considered suspicious and that an investigation was ongoing.

Charland said Margabandhu was reckless and trying to make easy money.

“This situation here on Carson Street was him throwing a speakeasy party that was highly dangerous. The property wasn’t permitted, didn’t have sprinkler systems, and ultimately, the building caught fire, which was the worst-case scenario we could have had happen there,” said Charland.

No one was hurt in the fire.

U.S. Vetoes UNSC Gaza Ceasefire Resolution for Third Time

The U.S. vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. It was the third ceasefire veto issued by the U.S. at the U.N. body. This is Palestinian U.N. Ambassador Riyad Mansour.

Riyad Mansour: “The message given today to Israel with this veto is that it can continue to get away with murder. Israel cannot and should not and will not get away with it. We will not allow it. This veto does not absolve Israel of its obligations, nor of those who shield it.”

The U.S. circulated its own resolution proposal this week calling for a “temporary ceasefire as soon as practicable.”

Covid death toll in US likely 16% higher than official tally, study says

Researchers think undercounting goes beyond overloaded health systems to a lack of awareness of Covid and low levels of testing

The second year of the pandemic also had nearly as many uncounted excess deaths as the first, the study found.

More than 1.1 million Americans have died from Covid, according to official records. But the actual number is assuredly higher, given the high rates of excess deaths. Demographers wanted to know how many could be attributed to Covid, and they drilled down to data at the county level to discover patterns in geography and time.
