Pittsburgh parking mobile app releases results of investigation into data hack – WPXI

PITTSBURGH — More than 20 million users had their information stolen after a major parking app hack in March. The Pittsburgh Parking Authority asked people who use their Park Mobile app to change their passwords.

Park Mobile said hackers were able to steal passwords even though the data was encrypted.

The Go Mobile PGH team concluded their investigation into the situation and found the following key points:

  • No credit card information was accessed.
  • No information related to a user’s parking transaction history was accessed.
  • Only general account information was accessed. This includes license plate numbers, as well as email addresses, phone numbers, and vehicle nicknames if provided. In a small percentage of cases, mailing addresses were also affected.
  • Encrypted passwords were accessed, but not the keys required to read them.
  • The company does not collect Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers or dates of birth.

Out of caution, they also notified law enforcement about the hack.

Andy McCarthy hits media’s lack of curiosity into the Biden family connection to China | Fox News

Former chief assistant U.S. Attorney and Fox News contributor Andrew McCarthy reacted Thursday to reports Vice President Joe Biden met with his son’s Russian and Ukrainian business associates saying, “Hunter Biden’s business is access.”

During an appearance on “The Story“, McCarthy criticized the president’s son and ex-business partner Devon Archer, who was convicted in a federal fraud case in the Southern District of New York.

“These guys were not in business to produce value. They were in business because they were related to or had close relationships to high-ranking people in the United States government and they provided access,” said McCarthy. So I think people ought to be very concerned about this,” he continued.

Military couple shot and killed outside their Virginia home

Police are searching for a Nissan and its driver after a military couple were shot and killed outside their home in Virginia, authorities said Wednesday.

Edward McDaniel, 55, and Brenda McDaniel, 63, were fatally shot in the 8000 block of Flint Street in Springfield, an area just southwest of Washington, D.C., according to Fairfax County Police. Both were military veterans. The husband was an active-duty colonel in the U.S. Army, NBC Washington reported.

“They were tragically and horribly murdered in their neighborhood,” Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin David said during a news conference on Wednesday.

The motive was unclear, but authorities said they believe the tragedy was related to a burglary at their home on Monday. A preliminary investigation suggests the person who broke into the residence earlier this week is the suspect in the shooting, according to police. Officials have not specified what evidence led them to draw that conclusion.

However, Davis said police also believe the shooter was known to a relative of the military couple.

Officers responded to a 911 call about 9:20 a.m. ET at the residence, according to police. Authorities found the bodies of the two victims in their front yard, both with multiple gunshot wounds.

At least two people were inside the home at the time of the shooting, police said.

Will Tony Moreno run as a Republican in Pittsburgh mayoral race?

Democratic Pittsburgh mayoral candidate Ed Gainey may face a Republican opponent in the fall, based on early results of write-in votes released Tuesday.

Retired Pittsburgh police officer Tony Moreno, 51, of Brighton Heights, has received 1,379 Republican write-in votes thus far. Moreno ran a populist campaign as a Democrat, but finished a distant third in last week’s primary election.

The write-in tally isn’t yet complete, according to Allegheny County spokeswoman Amie Downs. But it puts him far above the 250-vote threshold to get on the ballot as a Republican. Of the 2,136 write-in votes cast, 276 Republican write-ins have yet to be tallied.

“Once all write-ins are complete, all candidates who met the threshold to qualify will receive letters with instructions,” Downs said in an email. “The candidates must file everything that they would have filed had they run for the office and they must also complete, sign (notarized) and return a form to accept the nomination.”

Aug. 9 is the deadline for candidates to accept the nomination or file papers to withdraw from the ballot.

‘Enough’: Biden calls for action on guns in wake of San Jose shooting – CNNPolitics

(CNN)President Joe Biden on Wednesday urged Congress to “take immediate action” on gun legislation in the wake of a shooting in San Jose, California, that killed eight people earlier in the day, noting that he was ordering the flag lowered to half-staff just weeks after other mass shootings around the country.

“Enough,” Biden said in a statement. “Once again, I urge Congress to take immediate action and heed the call of the American people, including the vast majority of gun owners, to help end this epidemic of gun violence in America.”
A gunman killed eight people when he opened fire at public transit rail yard. The investigation is ongoing and officials have not released a possible motive. The shooter, an employee of the Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), is also dead.
Biden described the shooting as a “horrific tragedy” and said he and Vice President Kamala Harris, who also called on Congress to act, had been briefed on the situation.
“We are still awaiting many of the details of this latest mass shooting, but there are some things we know for sure. There are at least eight families who will never be whole again. There are children, parents, and spouses who are waiting to hear whether someone they love is ever going to come home. There are union brothers and sisters — good, honest, hardworking people — who are mourning their own,” Biden said.
The President added: “Every life that is taken by a bullet pierces the soul of our nation. We can, and we must, do more.”
Biden’s ordering of the flag to be lowered follows recent mass shootings in and around Atlanta, Indianapolis, Boulder, Colorado, and Rock Hill, South Carolina.

San Jose shooting leaves 8 dead, deceased suspect identified; White House monitoring rail yard incident | Fox News

A shooting at a rail yard in San Jose, California, early Wednesday left eight people dead, not including the suspect, who was also declared deceased after taking his own life, authorities confirmed.

The suspect was identified as Samuel Cassidy, who was an employee at the Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), where the incident took place, according to authorities. No motive is known for the shooting at this time.

Santa Clara County Sheriff’s spokesman Deputy Russell Davis said several explosive devices were found inside a building at the VTA control center. A bomb squad is at the scene and there is no present danger to the community, he said.

An investigation is also underway of an arson fire at what is believed to be the nearby home of the suspect. FBI agents and the San Jose Fire Department were at the second scene. Authorities say the house caught fire before the shooting at the VTA.

In Washington, D.C., principal deputy press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said the White House will continue to stay in close contact with local officials in San Jose, before using the shooting as an opportunity to call for Congress to strengthen background checks.”

The White House is monitoring the situation, and our hearts go out to the victims and their families,” Jean-Pierre said. “We still don’t have all the details, but what is clear, as the president has said, is that we are suffering from an epidemic of gun violence in this country, both in mass shootings and in the lives that are being taken in daily gun violence that doesn’t make national headlines.”

Jen Psaki Shutting Down Fox News’ Peter Doocy During Presser Gets Mixed Reviews

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki told Fox News’ Peter Doocy that he was “misunderstanding how this process actually works” after he pressed her on whether the U.S. would investigate the origins of COVID-19 on Monday.

Doocy asked Psaki why President Joe Biden wasn’t pushing harder to investigate “the origins of COVID” during Monday’s White House press conference. He cited a Wall Street Journal article claiming that researchers at China’s Wuhan Institute of Virology fell ill with symptoms that could have been caused by the virus in November 2019. Psaki said that the administration was pressing for an investigation into the virus’ origins headed by the World Health Organization.

“First of all, we need access to the underlying data and information in order to have that investigation,” Psaki said. “I think you’re misunderstanding how this process actually works. An international investigation, lead by the World Health Organization, is actually something we’ve been pressing for, for several months.”

In a bipartisan voice vote, the Senate approved an amendment introduced by Iowa Republican Joni Ernst to be included in the Endless Frontier Act, which seeks to counter Chinese economic and geopolitical ambitions.

REPUBLICANS SEEK TO TOUGHEN ANTI-CHINA BILL, FOCUS SPENDING ON COUNTERING CCP AMID PRICE TAG CONCERNS

“After COVID appeared in the vicinity of the Wuhan Institute, instead of cooperating…to discover the source of the outbreak, Chinese officials instead ordered the destruction of some of the coronavirus samples and blocked access to the lab,” Ernst said on the Senate floor, adding that China continues to block international access to study the origins of the virus.

“My amendment would ensure not another dime of taxpayer dollars goes, spent subsidizing communist China,” she added.

Help wanted: Westmoreland County seeks applicants for vacant jobs

Westmoreland County has the “help wanted” sign out to fill jobs in several departments but, as has been the case in the private sector, there isn’t enough community interest to fill vacant positions.

It has been so much of a challenge to fill the roster of guards at the county prison that, on Monday, officials converted part-time jobs to full-time status, hoping the move will lure candidates to fill open positions at the lockup in Hempfield.

Applicants for vacant guard jobs have lagged over the past several months. Warden Bryan Kline said the hiring period for guard candidates saw just three applicants show up for a required agility test. Just one person passed the test but declined a job offer, Kline said.

There are 20 open guard jobs and 12 additional positions held by part-time employees.
