Consumers battered by sky-high gasoline prices shouldn’t expect relief from the oil industry anytime soon.
Many oil and gas executives say they have little interest in increasing oil production — even at crude’s near-record prices, which make extraction very profitable for their companies.
The price of crude oil has been steadily rising since the start of last year. It hit $100 a barrel in March after Russia invaded Ukraine — the first time in 12 years it breached three digits.

Shu Ming Tang died of a single gunshot wound during an alleged daylight robbery in 1993. His killer’s trail went cold for the next three decades.A San Carlos murder that stumped investigators for nearly 30 years has finally been solved, with California authorities announcing Thursday the recent arrest of a 61-year-woman in Oklahoma. Rayna Hoffman-Ramos, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, is suspected of fatally shooting a corner store owner in April 1993, in what is believed to have been a daylight robbery gone wrong. The victim, Shu Ming Tang, was hospitalized with a single gunshot wound and later died. Despite learning that a woman had been seen leaving the Devonshire Little Store shortly after the 1 p.m. shooting, the case remained unsolved for 29 years. Detectives reopened the case in 2018. “We owe it to the families and victims, however long it takes, to give some measure of justice,” said San Mateo County Sheriff’s Lt. Jacob Trickett. (CNN)President Joe Biden’s Supreme Court nominee, Ketanji Brown Jackson, defended her judicial record Tuesday as she faced intense questioning from Republican senators during the second day of her historic confirmation hearings.
Republicans have attempted to portray the nominee as weak on crime by zeroing in on some of her past defense work and have raised questions over her judicial philosophy as they warn against activism, and prescribing policy outcomes, from the bench.
During Tuesday’s hearing, Jackson addressed and disputed those criticisms by stressing her concern for public safety and the rule of law, both as a judge and an American. She argued that she approaches her work in an impartial way and that personal opinions do not play a role.
When pressed by Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, who serves as the top Republican on the Judiciary Committee, Jackson sidestepped a question related to whether she supported expanding the Supreme Court to include more than nine justices.
A Boeing 737 carrying 132 people crashed early Monday in China. Although Boeing’s 737 has faced extraordinarily high-profile safety concerns over the past three years, the plane that crashed Monday was a different version of the aircraft than the embattled 737 Max that shook Boeing to its core.
The crashed China Eastern Airlines plane was a Boeing 737-800. It’s the most common version of Boeing’s jets now in service, and it is the workhorse of many airlines’ fleets.
Tracking services FlightAware and Flightradar24 reported this plane is the China Eastern Airlines Boeing 737-800 aircraft that crashed Monday with 132 people on board. This is a file photo taken on a Chinese tarmac in February 2022.
There are 4,502 of the 737-800s now in service worldwide, according to aviation analytics firm Cirium, making it by far the most common Boeing aircraft in use today. It is the most common plane model in the United States, where there are 795 in service, as well as in China, which has 1,177 in service. And it’s the second-most-common plane in use worldwide, behind only the A320 made by Boeing (BA) rival Airbus (EADSF).

BRUSSELS — A car slammed at high speed into Carnival revelers in a small town in southern Belgium early Sunday, killing six people and leaving 10 more with life-threatening injuries, authorities said, adding many others were lightly injured.
“What should have been a great party turned into a tragedy,” said Belgian Interior Minister Annelies Verlinden.
The prosecutor’s office, which gave the death toll, also said two local people in their thirties were arrested at the scene in Strépy-Bracquegnies, 50 kilometers (30 miles) south of Brussels. Prosecutors said, in the early stages of their investigation, there were no elements to suspect a terror motive.
In an age-old tradition, Carnival revelers had gathered at dawn, intending to pick up others at their homes along the way, to finally hold their famous festivity again after it was banned for the past two years to counter the spread of COVID-19. Some dressed in colorful garb with bells attached, walking behind the beat of drums. It was supposed to be a day of deliverance.
Instead, said mayor Jacques Gobert, “what happened turned it into a national catastrophe.”
