PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Twenty-three candidates, an unusually large number, have filed nominating petitions for the Republican and Democratic nominations for U.S. Senate and governor of Pennsylvania.
KDKA political editor Jon Delano breaks down what is shaping up to be a busy primary.

“We’re certainly facing an unprecedented election year with an unbelievable amount of candidates at the top of the ticket,” says Mike DeVanney, a Republican political strategist.
It’s the first time in decades that no incumbent is running for governor and United States senator on the same ballot, and that has lots of candidates thinking this is their chance.
But not unexpectedly, only one Democrat is running for governor: Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro.
Ten Republicans would like the chance to take him on. They are former Congressman Lou Barletta, state Senator Jake Corman, Montgomery County Commissioner Joe Gale, political consultant Charlie Gerow, former Congresswoman Melissa Hart, state Senator Doug Mastriano, former U.S. Attorney Bill McSwain, Pittsburgh attorney Jason Richey, former Delaware County Councilman Dave White and heart surgeon Nche Zama.
“It’s going to be off to the races here,” says DeVanney. “It’s going to be a fascinating election year for Republicans. No clear frontrunner, wide-open, and we’ve got nine weeks to go.”

Saint Patrick’s Day 2022: What is the true History of St. Patrick’s Day? | Marca
While St. Patrick’s Day pays homage to Ireland, and celebrations are held in the country, many people in the United States also pay homage, especially due to the large number of Irish people who migrated to the country many years ago.
Who was St. Patrick?
St. Patrick was born Maewyn Succat but changed his name to Patricius (or Patrick), which comes from the Latin term for ‘father figure’ following his decision to become a priest.
The celebrations on March 17 first began back in 1631, when the Church created a Feast Day in homage to St. Patrick. Having been the Patron Saint of Ireland, he died around the fifth century, which means that his passing came 12 centuries prior to the modern version of the holiday first being observed.
“We know that he was a Roman citizen, because Britain was Roman then, and then he was enslaved and taken to Ireland, where he either escaped or was released,” said Marion Casey, a clinical assistant professor of Irish Studies at New York University.
“And then he became a priest and went back to Ireland, where he had a lot of luck converting the Druid culture into Christians.”
The church associated a botanical item with St. Patrick, which is customary for all saints, as he was assigned him the symbol of the lucky shamrock.

Chris Cuomo seeks $125 million from CNN in explosive arbitration demand | Fox News
Former CNN anchor Chris Cuomo has filed a $125 million arbitration demand against CNN for “unlawful termination,” alleging that WarnerMedia’s claim the former “Cuomo Prime Time” host violated the network’s news standards and practices is “false.”
CNN fired Cuomo in December following a brief suspension over his extensive involvement in helping his brother, former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, D., stave off sexual misconduct allegations. A subsequent probe of Chris Cuomo’s actions at CNN revealed a separate sexual misconduct charge against him from his earlier tenure at ABC News.
“It should by now be obvious that Chris Cuomo did not lie to CNN about helping his brother. In fact, as the limited information released from WarnerMedia’s investigation makes clear, CNN’s highest-level executive not only knew about Chris’s involvement in helping his brother but also actively assisted the Governor, both through Chris and directly themselves. As CNN has admitted, network standards were changed in a calculated decision to boost ratings. When those practices were called into question, Chris was made the scapegoat,” attorney Bryan Freedman told Fox News Digital.

Netflix Test Will Let Members Pay for Password-Sharing Users – Variety
Netflix will soon launch a test letting primary account holders pay an additional fee for users outside their households — a new attempt by the company to address illicit password-sharing.
According to the Netflix terms of service, a customer’s account “may not be shared with individuals beyond your household.” After years of turning a blind eye to password-sharing behavior that falls outside that requirement, the company last year ran a limited test prompting users to enter their account credentials as a way to nudge freeloaders into paying for their own accounts.
Now, in an upcoming test launching in three countries — Chile, Costa Rica and Peru — Netflix will let members who share their accounts with people outside their household do so “easily and securely, while also paying a bit more,” according to Chengyi Long, director of product innovation at Netflix. The new options will roll out in the next few weeks in the three countries (and may or may not expand beyond those markets).

Uptown Bar Shut Down After Raid
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A bar in Uptown was shut down after a raid.
The state calls it a nuisance bar with complaints about drug activity and late-night noise and has been trying to shut it down for years. On Wednesday, agents once again raided Ace’s & Deuce’s lounge on Fifth Avenue and shut it down — at least for now.
Agents from the Nuisance Bar Taskforce descended on the bar shortly after 1 p.m. and by midday, the Allegheny County Health Department had shut it down for numerous violations. But the investigation goes deeper.
Detectives from vice and narcotics, state police and agents from the Liquor Control Board descended on the bar en masse much to the delight of the bar’s neighbor, the Bethlehem Haven Woman’s Shelter.
The shelter for women in recovery has been one of the major sources of complaints against the bar for drug activity and late-night noise. Executive Director Annette Fetchko calls it a threat to the health and safety of her clients.

‘No more switching clocks’: Senate passes act to make daylight saving time permanent | US news | The Guardian
The Senate unanimously approved a measure Tuesday that would make daylight saving time permanent across the United States next year.
The bipartisan bill, named the Sunshine Protection Act, would ensure Americans would no longer have to change their clocks twice a year. But the bill still needs approval from the House, and the signature of Joe Biden, to become law.
“No more switching clocks, more daylight hours to spend outside after school and after work, and more smiles – that is what we get with permanent daylight saving time,” said Senator Ed Markey of Massachusetts, the original cosponsor of the legislation, in a statement.

Biden to announce $1 billion in military aid to Ukraine
President Biden plans to sign legation that will send over $1 billion in military assistance to Ukraine.
The funding comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is set Wednesday to deliver a remote address to Congress, during which he is expected to outline a list of equipment the Ukrainians feel they need to fend off the Russian invasion.
The New York Times reports that the list is not meant to be a replacement for Ukraine’s request for MiG fighter jets from Poland, an effort that has been stalled by the U.S. amid fears that it could serve to escalate tensions between NATO and Russia.
“The intelligence community has assessed that the transfer of MiG-29s may be mistaken as escalatory and could result in significant Russian reaction that might increase the prospects of a military escalation with NATO,” Pentagon press secretary John Kirby told reporters last week. “Therefore, we also assess the MiG-29s to Ukraine to be high-risk.”

Employee shot in parking lot of Monroeville Olive Garden – WPXI
MONROEVILLE, Pa. — As families were wrapping up dinner inside of the Monroeville Olive Garden, a 19-year-old employee was shot in the leg outside in the parking lot.
It happened around 9:30 p.m. Saturday night when the restaurant was still open with customers inside.
Many customers can’t believe this family restaurant turned into a crime scene.

We reached out to Olive Garden for comment, but the restaurant declined to share a statement and referred us to the police department.

One person was killed and two others were injured in separate shootings overnight in Pittsburgh, authorities said.
The first happened about 10 p.m. on Kedron Street in the city’s Homewood section. Police responded to a ShotSpotter notification and found a man in his late 50s who had been shot in the head.
Authorities performed CPR until paramedics arrived, said Public Safety spokeswoman Cara Cruz, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office had not released the man’s identity as of early Monday.
About an hour later, Cruz said, authorities received word that a man had walked into a hospital on the city’s North Side with a gunshot wound to his leg.
Shortly after that, someone called 911 to report a man calling for help near Island Avenue and Preble Avenue.
Officers found a man who Cruz said had been shot multiple times and come out of the river. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Russia has requested military and economic assistance from China, US officials say – CNNPolitics
Washington, DC (CNN)Russia has asked China for military support, including drones, as well as economic assistance for its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, according to conversations CNN had with two US officials.
The requests came after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, one of the officials said. That official declined to detail the Chinese reaction but indicated that the Chinese had responded.Potential assistance from the Chinese would be a significant development in Russia’s invasion. It could upend the hold Ukrainian forces still have in the country as well as provide a counterweight to the harsh sanctions imposed on Russia’s economy. When asked by CNN about the reporting of Russia’s request for military aid, Liu Pengyu, spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in the US, said in a statement, “I’ve never heard of that.”Liu expressed concern for “the Ukraine situation” — calling it “indeed disconcerting” — and said China has and will continue to provide humanitarian assistance to Ukraine.
Liu said: “The high priority now is to prevent the tense situation from escalating or even getting out of control. … China calls for exercising utmost restraint and preventing a massive humanitarian crisis.
“And Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Zhao Lijian accused the US on Monday of “peddling disinformation.”
The Russian embassy in the US did not immediately respond to CNN’s request for comment.

India says it accidentally fired missile into Pakistan
ISLAMABAD, New Delhi — India said on Friday it had accidentally fired a missile into Pakistan this week because of a “technical malfunction” during routine maintenance, giving its version of events after Pakistan summoned India’s envoy to protest.
Military experts have in the past warned of the risk of accidents or miscalculations by the nuclear-armed neighbours, which have fought three wars and engaged in numerous smaller armed clashes, usually over the disputed territory of Kashmir.
Tensions have eased in recent months, and the incident, which may have been the first of its kind, immediately raised questions about safety mechanisms.
“On March 9, 2022, in the course of a routine maintenance, a technical malfunction led to the accidental firing of a missile,” the Indian Ministry of Defence said in a three-paragraph statement.
“It is learnt that the missile landed in an area of Pakistan. While the incident is deeply regrettable, it is also a matter of relief that there has been no loss of life due to the accident.”

Police brace for large crowds as Pittsburgh’s St. Patrick’s Day parade returns | TribLIVE.com
For the first time since 2019, Pittsburgh’s St. Patrick’s Day parade will go on as planned in March, and police are expecting its return to be very well-attended.
“After two very challenging years, it’s understandable that people will be in the mood to celebrate one of Pittsburgh’s most beloved traditions: St. Patrick’s Day,” said Public Safety Director Lee Schmidt.
The parade was canceled in 2020 as the covid-19 pandemic took hold. In 2021, it was pushed to September as covid cases again surged throughout the winter and into the early spring.
Schmidt urged revelers to keep in mind that “while the worst of the pandemic appears to have waned at this moment, it has not disappeared entirely.”
In addition to large crowds along the parade route, authorities also expect the usual party spots – the South Side, Downtown and the North Shore – to see crowds reminiscent of pre-pandemic celebrations.
Temporary light towers will be in the busiest areas, and firefighters and liquor control officers will be doing occupancy checks. Schmidt said bars and restaurants exceeding their posted occupancy limits will be cleared and closed.
