2 people found shot, dead inside Springdale apartment

Allegheny County homicide detectives were called to a home on Pittsburgh Street in Springdale Borough on Monday afternoon.

The woman and a man, both of whom had been shot, were found by a maintenance worker, Sgt. Todd Dolfi said.

County homicide detectives were called to the apartment in the 1000 block of Pittsburgh Street at about 3:40 p.m.

“They’ve only lived here two weeks,” neighbor, Janelle Conroy said. ”They just moved in.”

The names of the deceased have not yet been released.

Police said a maintenance worker discovered the man and woman when he stopped by just after 3:30 Monday afternoon.

“As soon as I came home a maintenance man was here to change locks, to install new locks for them, and he went inside and found them, and I guess he shot right back out because he didn’t want to disturb anything of course,” Beth Hovet said.

Beth Hovet lives in one of the connected apartments.

“I haven’t seen them in a while,” Hovet said. “A lot of people around here are really close. They kinda look out for each other.”

Wildfires Burn More Than 150,000 Acres in Three States – The New York Times

Wildfires in Arizona, Nebraska and New Mexico have left at least one person dead and destroyed hundreds of structures.

Jesus Jiménez and

McKenna Thompson, 30, was not too worried when she learned last week that she was among thousands of people across Arizona, Nebraska and New Mexico who would be forced to leave as wildfires approached.

She had been driving back home to Flagstaff, Ariz., when she heard about the evacuation order. As smoke swirled around her car and the skies darkened, she soon felt as if she were “looking at hell,” she said on Sunday. She picked up her 2-year-old son and her mother and drove to a cafe to wait out the fire.

A few hours later, she learned that her home had burned down.

Ms. Thompson was caught up in the Tunnel Fire, which officials estimate has damaged or destroyed 30 homes. Displaced families have been left with rubble, ashes and a harrowing reminder of what they’ve lost.

“Everything is gone,” Ms. Thompson said.

The Tunnel Fire was one of many wildfires this past week that have collectively scorched more than 150,000 acres and forced the evacuations of at least 4,000 homes, officials said. The fires, which have been blamed for at least one death, are part of an early and active season across the country, as wildfires have also plagued CaliforniaColorado and Texas.

Three more shootings: how Pittsburgh leaders are trying to end gun violence – WPXI

PITTSBURGH — Another violent weekend in Pittsburgh, with police responding to multiple shooting calls throughout the area in just a matter of hours.

One week after the mass shooting on Easter Sunday, city leaders are calling for a change.

“What this incident brought to light was a problem,” said Isaac Faldey, president of Community Alliance of Spring Garden. “That was a big problem, and it’s not just what the police need to solve, it’s what the community can do.”

Faldey led a round-table discussion on how to respond to Easter Sunday’s mass shooting.

“We want to try to get something going for the entire North Side, even if it’s just a start,” Faldey said.

Just hours beforehand, police around the Pittsburgh area were once again busy, responding to calls of violence.

Around 10:30 Saturday night, a man was found on Wylie Avenue in Pittsburgh’s Hill District with multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

At 2 a.m. Sunday, emergency crews were notified of a female on St Clair Avenue in Clairton who was shot in the stomach. The woman was also taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Around the same time, another shooting. This time in Duquesne, where a man was taken to the hospital after being shot in the shoulder.

Faldey said it’s not just the job of police to stop these violent acts, but everyone’s.

“We as a community are going to try to help the city move on from that,” he said.

Faldey said that right now, the group is focused on the youth and finding ways to target that age group to start curbing the violence they’re currently seeing.

Macron is reelected as French president, defeating Le Pen

Paris — French President Emmanuel Macron comfortably won reelection to a second term Sunday, according to polling agencies’ projections. In the midst of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the result offered the European Union the reassurance of leadership stability in the bloc’s only nuclear-armed power and was immediately hailed by France’s allies.

A second five-year term for the centrist Macron spares France and its allies the seismic upheaval of a wartime shift of power to Macron’s populist challenger Marine Le Pen, who quickly acknowledged her defeat Sunday night but still appeared on course for a best-ever showing for her fiercely nationalist far-right policies.

During her campaign, Le Pen pledged to dilute French ties with the 27-nation EU, NATO and Germany, moves that would have shaken Europe’s security architecture as the continent deals with its worst conflict since World War II. Le Pen also spoke out against EU sanctions on Russian energy supplies and faced scrutiny during the campaign over her previous friendliness with the Kremlin.

With more than three-quarters of votes counted, Macron was leading 55% to 45% for Le Pen.

Netflix and CNN woes show viewers may have had enough

LOS ANGELES — Thanks to Netflix and CNN, the entertainment industry has just received a masterclass into what works and what doesn’t when it comes to streaming.

  • Lesson One: Just creating a streaming channel, even one with a well-known name, is no guarantee of success. Viewers are showing their limits when it comes to paying for multiple services.
  • Lesson Two: The streaming market will continue to grow, but with so many players at this point, some will struggle to find a place with viewers.
  • Lesson Three: Content is still king. To succeed, a content channel needs to retain subscribers with original talked-about, exclusive shows, movies or specials, backed by a deep reserve of older, popular content that can be aired again and again to tide viewers over between hits.

Pittsburgh police searching for suspected porch pirate – WPXI

PITTSBURGH — Police are investigating after a Pittsburgh man was captured on home surveillance footage stealing packages off front porches and replacing them with empty boxes.

“He just dropped, swapped and dipped,” said Rose Nyland of Brookline.

Rose Nyland’s blood pressure skyrockets when she reviews her home surveillance video of a porch pirate in action.

Wearing a mask, gloves, and hooded sweatshirt, the suspect casually walks up to the front porch of her Woodbourne Avenue home with another box.

He then takes an empty package, swaps it out for the package that was just delivered, acts like he’s taking a picture of the fake delivery and then casually walks off.

“Tah dah! A whole lotta nothing. Some packing material!” said Nyland.

Nyland says he got away with clothes for her fiancé worth hundreds of dollars.

After he hit this neighborhood, he traveled to Dormont Avenue in Dormont and stole more packages.

Investigators told Channel 11 he then went to Overbrook and took off with items there.

Nyland says she’s furious, but she is hopeful police will find him soon with the series of neighborhood cameras out there and active social media groups reposting his image.

“Within seconds, somebody was like ‘ugh yeah this literally just happened in the Overbook group’ and then they sent screenshots,” said Nyland.

Pittsburgh Public Safety is encouraging residents to file reports if they have a package stolen.

More details emerge in Pittsburgh party shooting

Police were there just 90 minutes before the shooting started. At the party on Pittsburgh’s North Side where more than 200 people were gathered in an Airbnb rental, it was crowded and loud, witnesses said.

After the Easter morning shooting, Pittsburgh City Council members moved to try to rein in short-term rental properties like the one in East Allegheny.

The legislation, which will be introduced Tuesday, would require anyone operating an Airbnb or similar short-term rental unit to get a license from the city’s Department of Permits, Licenses and Inspections. They will need to provide contact information where officials can get in touch with them if issues arise at the rental property, along with other information like the maximum number of guests permitted for each short-term rental.

Licenses would have to be renewed annually.

Property owners also would need to keep a log of guests who enter the property — including their names, addresses and phone numbers — which they would have to provide to city code enforcement officers, if they requested it.

“Currently, short-term rental properties aren’t regulated,” said Councilman Bobby Wilson, who represents the area where the shooting took place. “This provides us an avenue for us to require a license to operate one.”

Wilson is sponsoring the legislation with Councilwomen Theresa Kail-Smith and Deb Gross.

Matthew Steffy-Ross’ family speaks out after mass shooting on Pittsburgh’s North Side

Steffy-Ross was one of the two teenagers killed in Sunday’s mass shooting on Pittsburgh’s North Side.

Steffy-Ross’ great-aunt, Bonnie McLain, said she talked to him just hours before the shooting happened.

“I said I will see you in the morning. That was the last time I spoke with him because when I got there the next morning, he wasn’t home, but I didn’t know why. I just didn’t know why. My neighbor came out, and she told me about it, about the mass shooting, I had a feeling in the pit of my stomach only because I hadn’t seen him. He wasn’t there,” McLain said.

Soon after, McLain learned her great-nephew had been shot and killed while attending a party.

On Tuesday, McLain wanted to focus on the good memories.

“Matthew was a fun, loving kid that cared so much about everybody. Matthew would give you the shirt off your back. He had a friend who really had no clothes much and he said to me, when he got paid, ‘I am going to get him some pants, Aunt Bonnie, because he doesn’t have any pants.’ That was this kid. The biggest smile in the world as you can see, if you look at any pictures of him, he cared about people and he loved people, and he acted upon it,” McLain said.

Steffy-Ross’ mentor, Lee Davis, said the 17-year-old was ready to launch a clothing line and wanted to surprise his great-aunt.

“The first T-shirt that was going to come off the line was going to go to his Aunt Bonnie. It was very important for him to have that T-shirt go to her because of how important she was to him in his life,” Davis said.

“He finally had a goal. He had something that he was interested in. He had something he had a passion for, and he helped bring it out in him,” McLain said.

Matthew’s cousin, Jeana McLain, became emotional when talking about that future.

Sweden Quran burnings: Dozens injured in riots – CNN

(CNN)Forty people have been injured in riots that broke out over Easter weekend in southern Sweden following a far-right anti-Muslim rally.

Some 26 police and 14 members of the public were injured, the spokesperson said, adding that police had arrested 26 individuals, including four minors, in Linköping and Norrköping where the violence began on Friday. There would be “more to come” as police analyze footage, the spokesperson added.
The riots erupted in several of Sweden’s southern cities after burnings of the Quran by Rasmus Paludan, leader of the Danish far-right Stram Kurs (Hard Line) party.
Paludan planned and carried out the anti-Muslim demonstration, posting a picture of himself on social media with a burning Quran and declared intentions of burning more.
