Three sentenced in $87 million Medicaid fraud scheme

Three people who were part of a sophisticated, $87 million health care fraud scheme were sentenced in federal court in Pittsburgh on Wednesday. The three were among a total of 16 people charged for billing Pennsylvania Medicaid for in-home health care for services that were never performed.

On Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Cathy Bissoon sentenced Arlinda Moriarty, 53, of Cranberry to seven years in prison.

Her sister, Daynelle Dickens, 48, of Pittsburgh was ordered to serve two years, and their uncle, Tony Brown, 65, was ordered to serve three years probation, including three months on house arrest.

The three, who pleaded guilty in May, must also pay restitution. For Moriarty, that amount is $8.7 million.

26-year-old dies after being shot multiple times in Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH —

A man died after being shot multiple times in Pittsburgh’s St. Clair neighborhood.

The shooting happened around 8:15 p.m. Tuesday on the 500 block of Kohne Street.

State police said they found the man, identified as 26-year-old Marcus Watts, in the road with multiple gunshot wounds and pronounced him dead at the scene.

No arrests have been announced.

Why It’s Important to Know if You Have Dense Breasts Like Katie Couric

On Wednesday, Katie Couric revealed that she had breast cancer.

In an essay on her website, she wrote about the “heart-stopping, suspended animation feeling” she had upon receiving her diagnosis in June; she also noted that she had dense breasts — a common classification that can increase the risk of developing the disease.

About half of women who are 40 years old or older have dense breast tissue, said Dr. Laura Esserman, director of the Breast Care Center at the University of California, San Francisco. Here’s what to know about what breast density means and how dense breasts can influence cancer risk.

Density isn’t related to breast size or firmness, said Dr. Sarah Friedewald, chief of breast imaging at the Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine. It is a measure of how much fibrous and glandular tissue is in your breasts compared with the amount of fatty tissue, as viewed on a mammogram. These tissues include the glands that create milk, the tubes that ferry milk to the nipples and the fibrous tissue that binds them together.

Every mammogram report includes an assessment of a woman’s breast density, which falls into one of four categories: almost entirely fatty; some areas of scattered density; evenly dense; or extremely dense. Dense breasts is an umbrella term that refers to the latter two categories.

Hurricane Ian landfall approaches as storm nearing Category 5 

Hurricane Ian is expected to make landfall in Florida in the next few hours, with wind speeds of up to 155mph meaning the storm is nearing the most dangerous Category 5 status.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami said Ian was expected to cause “life-threatening” storm surges, catastrophic winds and flooding on Florida’s southwest coast.

Suspicious fire engulfs three Pittsburgh police vehicles – WTAE

PITTSBURGH —

A suspicious fire engulfed three Pittsburgh police vehicles on Wednesday morning.

The fire broke out a little before 3 a.m. outside of a building on Western Avenue on the city’s North Side.

Officials said they determined the fire is arson.

Police have not announced any arrests.

WEST MIFFLIN, Pa. — Don Orkosey was at Kennywood on Saturday night when he witnessed the shooting. He said one teen bumped into another teen by mistake, a punch was thrown, and gunshots followed.

Investigation underway into house fire in East Pittsburgh

Fire broke out on Tuesday evening

Fire crews on the scene said the fire was mostly contained to one property and no one was inside the house when the fire broke out.

No injuries were reported.

The inside of the home on Franklin Street was pretty much gutted by the fire.

Turtle Creek nursing home shuts down suddenly

Forty-seven residents were evacuated from Hillside Manor around 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

Mayor Adam Forgie said the closing was caused by a number of issues, including a lack of staff, leaking pipes, an inoperative sprinkler system and detached smoke alarms.

The borough’s building inspector is reviewing the property Monday to see where they go from here.

Some of the residents went with their families, others were sent to Kane in McKeesport or the Walden Nursing Home in North Huntingdon.

At least 7 children among dead after gunman opens fire at school in Russia

At least seven children were killed when a gunman wearing Nazi symbols opened fire at a school in the western Russian city of Izhevsk, Russian state media reported Monday.

Thirteen fatalities have been recorded so far, according to state news agency TASS. Among those killed was the school’s security guard, head of the regional government Alexander Brechalovn said in a video statement.

Investigators said 21 people, including 14 children, were injured, TASS reported.

3 injured during shooting at amusement park near Pittsburgh

West Mifflin, Pa. (AP) — Three people including two teenagers were shot late Saturday at an amusement park southeast of Pittsburgh, which was kicking off a Halloween-themed festival.

Police said two 15-year-olds and an adult man were injured during the shooting reported around 11 p.m. at Kennywood Park in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania. The victims were treated at hospitals and expected to recover, KDKA-TV reported.

Authorities said an argument between two groups of teenagers prompted the shooting by a suspect described as a male wearing a mask and black hoodie, KDKA-TV reported.

Kennywood had functioning metal detectors and security personnel were on duty, police said, leaving the unanswered question of how a gun entered the park.

Police are investigating using the park’s security cameras and witness statements, KDKA-TV reported.

Oh, deer: An unconventional rescue draws onlookers

PITTSBURGH —

It was hardly a typical Saturday for residents on East End Avenue in Pittsburgh’s Regent Square neighborhood, as word quickly spread that a deer had fallen down a large hole in the middle of the road.

“When it first went down, it was like fighting,” said Tracy Baton, a neighbor who saw the deer fall into the hole. “Now he’s a little quieter and down there looking pretty sad. And it’s broken off an antler.”

Rescue crews estimated the deer fell 40 feet.

The process included sedating the deer, before strapping it up and loading it onto a deer rack. The next step: relocating the deer somewhere safe.

Juvenile injured after police pursuit ends in Pittsburgh neighborhood, 1 person arrested

Allegheny County dispatchers said police and medics were sent to Middletown Road and Evanston Street in Sheraden at 5:40 p.m.

A juvenile was taken to the UPMC Children’s Hospital and one person is in custody after a police pursuit ended in a Pittsburgh neighborhood, police say.

11-year-old boy crashes grandparents’ car in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh Public Safety said an 11-year-old boy took his grandparents’ car and crashed it into a pole in Pittsburgh’s Windgap neighborhood.

The crash happened a little before 3 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of Broadhead Fording Road and Windgap Avenue.

Driver of vehicle shot multiple times in Wilkinsburg

WILKINSBURG, Pa. —

Allegheny County homicide detectives are investigating after a woman was shot several times on a main intersection in Wilkinsburg.

The shooting happened a little after 2 a.m. Thursday on the intersection of Ardmore Boulevard, right off of Brinton Road. The roadway was closed for nearly four hours while detectives investigated.

Police said the victim was at a red light in the charger when another vehicle pulled alongside and shot at the car. The victim was shot in the shoulder and leg several times.

Police said she was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive her injuries.

Hundreds of Pittsburgh homes under boil water advisory

 

On Thursday night, a boil water advisory was put in effect for about 600 households in Pittsburgh’s Elliott, Westwood, Ridgemont and Crafton Heights neighborhoods.

The advisory was put in place following a water main break on Steuben Street.

There was no initial word on when the advisory might lift.
