3 Dead, Dozens Injured After Suspected Smuggling Boat Capsizes Near San Diego : NPR

At least three people are dead and dozens injured after a suspected human smuggling boat capsized and split into pieces off the coast of San Diego on Sunday.

In a Sunday news conference, authorities said the boat broke apart after colliding with a reef. Officials said it had 30 people packed on board.

“It’s a tragic event,” said the city’s lifeguard chief, James Gartland, adding that it’s probably one of the worst tragedies he’s seen in his 26-year career.

The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, local lifeguards, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Border Patrol and other agencies responded to reports of an overturned vessel near the peninsula of Point Loma Sunday morning, close to the shoreline surrounding the Cabrillo National Monument in San Diego.

Trio of earthquakes rattles L.A. area before dawn – Los Angeles Times

Three earthquakes centered in Inglewood shook the Los Angeles area early Monday.

A magnitude-4.0 earthquake was reported at 4:44 a.m. Monday near Inglewood, less than half an hour after two smaller foreshocks hit the same area.

The larger quake was felt across Southern California, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. A magnitude-3.3 temblor that preceded it hit the same area at 4:15 a.m., while a magnitude-2.5 shaker struck at the same time about two miles away. There were no immediate reports of damage.

The main earthquake was centered near the intersection of Prairie and Century boulevards. It occurred less than a mile from Lennox, less than a mile from Hawthorne and one mile from Los Angeles.

It was followed by several smaller quakes in the Inglewood and Lennox area.

Earthquake expert Lucy Jones said on Twitter that the magnitude-4.0 quake was strong enough to be “felt by most people awake in LA” but noted that it had occurred “very deep” in the earth, about 12 miles down. She added it was likely not on any mapped faults. The foreshock and flurry of aftershocks occurred at about the same depth, Jones said.

A KCBS-TV news broadcast was on the air when the magnitude-4.0 temblor struck.

Low-income Californians to receive new COVID stimulus checks – Los Angeles Times

Gov. Gavin Newsom and legislative leaders announced Wednesday that they have agreed to provide low-income Californians a $600 state stimulus payment to help them weather financial hardships during the COVID-19 pandemic, part of a $9.6-billion economic recovery package that also includes $2.1 billion in grants for small businesses.

The “Golden State stimulus” payments provided under the state proposal, which will be expedited for legislative approval next week, are in addition to the $600-per-person stimulus checks already approved by Congress and would be on top of direct payments of up to $1,400 per person that have been proposed by House Democrats.

California Marine base missing 10 pounds of C-4 explosives: reports ⋆ The Savage Nation

Fox News:

A San Diego station reported the C-4 disappeared during a long training exercise two weeks earlier and may have been stolen

Around 10 pounds of explosives have vanished from a Marine Corps base in Southern California, reports said Thursday.

The explosives, identified as C-4, were being stored at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms in San Bernardino County, east of Los Angeles, KGTV-TV of San Diego first reported, citing a source with knowledge of the situation.

“Out of respect for the investigative process, NCIS does not comment on or confirm details relating to ongoing investigations,” Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) spokesman Jeff Houston told Fox News in an email early Friday.

The C-4 disappeared during a long training exercise two weeks earlier and may have been stolen. A reward was being offered for its safe return, the San Diego station reported.

C-4 is a high-powered explosive and one-tenth of the amount stolen could blow up a car, a former bomb technician told KGTV.

Bombing at California Church Known for Its Anti-L.G.B.T.Q. Views – The New York Times

The F.B.I. and local authorities are investigating a bombing on Saturday morning at a church in Los Angeles County that had recently been the target of protests for its extremist views against L.G.B.T.Q. people, women and the Black Lives Matter movement.

The police responded to reports of an explosion at the church, First Works Baptist Church, in El Monte, Calif., just after 1 a.m. on Saturday.

An “improvised explosive device” was found to be the source of the attack, said Chief David Reynoso of the Police Department in El Monte, which is about 13 miles east of Los Angeles. Officials would not elaborate on what they found.

No one was in the church at the time, and no injuries were reported. The authorities found obscenities and the words “get out” spray-painted on the front of the church, Chief Reynoso said.

33 missing children found in anti-human trafficking operation in Southern California – CNN

(CNN)Thirty-three missing children were recovered this month in an anti-human trafficking operation led by FBI’s Los Angeles field office, the bureau said in a statement Friday.

Of the 33 children recovered during “Operation Lost Angels,” eight were being sexually exploited at the time of their recovery, the FBI said. The operation began on January 11.
Two children were recovered multiple times during the operation, the FBI said, noting it’s not uncommon for rescued victims to return to commercial sex trafficking “either voluntarily or by force, fraud, or coercion.”
“This harmful cycle highlights the challenges victims face and those faced by law enforcement when attempting to keep victims from returning to an abusive situation. Victims may not self-identify as being trafficked or may not even realize they’re being trafficked,” the FBI statement said.
Some of the other victims located during the operation were sexually exploited in the past and were considered vulnerable missing children, the statement said.
One suspected human trafficker faces state charges as a result of the operation and several other investigations were opened, the FBI said.

Some of the rescued minor victims “were arrested for probation violations, robbery, or other misdemeanors” while one child a victim of a noncustodial parental kidnapping, according to the statement.

January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month and the caseload “for both sex and labor trafficking-related crimes has increased significantly in the past several years,” the statement said.”

The FBI considers human trafficking modern day slavery and the minors engaged in commercial sex trafficking are considered victims,” said Kristi Johnson, assistant director in charge of the Los Angeles field office. “While this operation surged resources over a limited period of time with great success, the FBI and our partners investigate child sex trafficking every day of the year and around the clock.”

Teaching children about human trafficking

The operation involved the Los Angeles Police Department, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, and more than two dozen other law enforcement agencies along with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the California Department of Child and Family Services, and victim advocacy organizations, according to the FBI.

The FBI is working with its partners to provide resources to the rescued children, including medical care and legal services.

New L.A. County quarantine order for travelers now official – Los Angeles Times

Los Angeles County has become the latest county in California to impose a mandatory quarantine on long-distance travelers.

At least two other counties — Santa Clara and San Francisco — have similar mandatory orders. The California Department of Public Health on Nov. 13 issued an advisory urging Californians to stay home or in their region and avoid nonessential travel, including for tourism or recreation.

The regional stay-at-home order prohibits hotels and other lodging companies from offering rooms to people visiting for tourism and leisure.

The moves are part of a desperate effort to slow the spread of COVID-19, which is pushing hospitals to the breaking point. L.A. County has seen an unprecedented surge in both cases and deaths since November and has emerged as one of the nation’s leading hot spots.

Nuro set to be California’s first driverless delivery service – BBC News

California has given the go-ahead for a commercial driverless delivery service for the first time.

Robotics start-up Nuro plans to start its driverless delivery operations as early as next year.

It previously tested its R2 vehicles in the state in April, but the permit will let it charge people for its service.

The firm’s vehicles will be limited to 35mph (56km/h), and will be restricted to operating in “fair weather” conditions.

“Issuing the first deployment permit is a significant milestone in the evolution of autonomous vehicles in California,” said California Department of Motor Vehicles director Steve Gordon.

“We will continue to keep the safety of the motoring public in mind as this technology develops.”

Nuro was founded by two former Google engineers and has funding from Japanese firm Softbank.

Nuro’s autonomous vehicles will take to the streets as early as 2021.

L.A. May Issue Countywide Emergency Order, Strict Measures, Says Mayor – Deadline

Los Angeles is now the epicenter of the Covid-19 pandemic. It is the most infected county of the most infected state in the most infected country in the world.

In the pandemic’s spring wave, New York held that distinction — and it still is the state to have seen the largest single daily number of deaths. But given that the tally of daily cases and hospitalizations continue to skyrocket in L.A. and the fact that ICU availability was 0% in Southern California on Thursday, Los Angeles is unfortunately catching up.

On Thursday, another 14,418 Covid-19 infections were confirmed in L.A. County. The new cases lifted the countywide cumulative total to 581,519. In a county of 10 million people, that means 1 in 20 residents has had the virus.

Even more shocking, Los Angeles County is now seeing more daily cases than entire countries, including onetime hotspots such as Spain, Mexico, Poland and Portugal.

L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti revealed Thursday evening that city testing results were “seeing a seven-day positivity rate of an alarming 19.6%. Some of our sites have a positivity rate as high as 30%,” he said. For L.A. County, the seven-day rate was 13.7%.”For comparison, at the very beginning of the pandemic, California-at-large had a 40% test positivity rate. But that was when the state was conducting about 2,000 tests a day. And since lower testing numbers tend to produce higher test positivity rates, for L.A. to have 19.6% test positivity even as it is now delivering nearly 41,500 tests a day is frightening.

In the past week, San Bernardino and Los Angeles counties have, respectively, registered 1,415 and 1,102 average daily cases per million residents. Those are the highest rates in the country among counties with at least 1 million residents. Riverside County has the fourth-highest daily cases per million. That data is per an aggregator of government statistics used by the CDC called USAFacts.

Los Angeles issues stay-home order as coronavirus surges – POLITICO

Los Angeles County announced a new stay-home order Friday as coronavirus cases surge out of control in the nation’s most populous county.

The three-week order takes effect Monday. It came as the county confirmed 24 new deaths and 4,544 new cases of COVID-19. The five-day average of new cases was 4,751.

Nearly 2,000 people in the county are hospitalized.“We know we are asking a lot from so many who have been sacrificing for months on end,” Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer said. “Acting with collective urgency right now is essential if we want to put a stop to this surge.”The order advises residents to stay home “as much as possible” and to wear a face covering when they go out. It bans people from gathering with people who aren’t in their households, whether publicly or privately.

L.A. County nears new stay-home order as COVID cases rise – Los Angeles Times

The specter of another COVID-19 shutdown is looming over Los Angeles County, as another record-high number of daily coronavirus cases Monday pushed the region over its self-set threshold for issuing a new stay-at-home order.

When such an order will be handed down, or what precise form it will take, is unclear — though the county director of public health, Barbara Ferrer, said Monday that “for sure we’re not going back to all of the restrictions that were in place in the original Safer at Home order.

“We’ll be working with the Board [of Supervisors] to determine additional safety modifications,” she said, describing the new health order as a “targeted Safer-at-Home order.”

The board is scheduled to meet Tuesday.

L.A. County suspends outdoor dining at restaurants as coronavirus surges – Los Angeles Times

In a devastating blow to Los Angeles’ struggling restaurant industry, L.A. County public health officials on Sunday announced they will suspend outdoor dining at restaurants amid a surge of new coronavirus cases.

Few segments of the L.A. retail economy have been hit harder by the pandemic than the once-booming dining world, with many landmark names closing in recent months and many more on the brink. After they were forced to close indoor dining rooms in the spring, many eateries got a lifeline when officials allowed them to serve outdoors, often in patios and makeshift dining halls built in parking lots and streets.

The new rule takes effect at 10 p.m. Wednesday and restricts restaurants — along with breweries, wineries and bars — to takeout and delivery only for the first time since May. It will remain in place for at least three weeks, officials said.

Wineries and breweries can continue retail operations.

“The persistent high number of cases requires additional safety measures that limit mixing in settings where people are not wearing masks,” Barbara Ferrer, the L.A. County health director, said in a statement.

Officials had warned earlier in the week that the new rule would be imposed if the five-day average of new cases reached 4,000, or if hospitalizations topped 1,750 per day.

Dodgers claim first World Series title in 32 years, rallying past Rays in Game 6

Dodgers win first World Series since 1988 after beating Rays in Game 6.

Los Angeles has officially transformed into Titletown.

For the second time in October, the city claimed a major sports championship as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Tampa Bay Rays, 3-1, in Game 6 of the 2020 World Series. Of course, the LeBron James-led Lakers already brought home the NBA title after topping the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals.

[Yahoo Store: Get your Los Angeles Dodgers championship gear here!]

The Dodgers triumph ends a 32-year championship drought for one of MLB’s most decorated franchises. Not since Kirk Gibson and Orel Hershiser became postseason legends in 1988 has the team’s season culminated with a celebration. It some ways, the wait felt a lot longer. Probably because the Dodgers have fallen short time and time again since becoming perennial World Series contenders in 2013. Now, all of that built up pain and frustration can give way to jubilation.
