Lockdown lifted at Lackland Air Force Base following reports of gunshots off-base

The lockdown at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland has been lifted following reports of gunshots heard off-base on Tuesday morning.

Brig. Gen. Russell D. Driggers, the commander of the 502nd Air Base Wing and Joint Base San Antonio, said that security personnel heard about six to eight shots fired at around 9:30 a.m.

The shots were reportedly fired off-base toward the base, he said.

San Antonio police said that officers did not find a shooting scene, and it was not an active shooter situation, despite initially being called one by JBSA. SAPD added that there was no threat to the public.

“In times like these, with the events that have been happening recently, we want to take these types of situations very seriously. We have procedures that we put in place to do that,” Driggers said.

Further details about the shooting are unknown at this time. Driggers said he did not know if a gunman was in custody, but he believes it was only one incident.

The Jan. 6 committee announced Tuesday morning that its hearing set for Wednesday has been postponed — but conflicting explanations were offered as to why.

Rep. Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif., told reporters on Capitol Hill following the committee’s announcement that there was no issue with witnesses in moving the hearing but “technical issues.”

“It’s just technical issues. I mean, we were, you know, the staff putting together all the videos, you know, doing 1-2-3, It was overwhelming, so we’re trying to give them a little room,” she said. “It’s not a big deal.”

Discover the history of the annual holiday and facts about the American flag and how to properly display it.

Bernard Cigrand, a small-town Wisconsin teacher, originated the idea for an annual flag day, to be celebrated across the country every June 14, in 1885. That year, he led his school in the first formal observance of the holiday. Cigrand, who later changed careers and practiced dentistry in Illinois, continued to promote his concept and advocate respect for the flag throughout his life.

Donald Michael Young, 44, of South Greensburg, was arraigned Monday on weapons and drug violations, in addition to child endangerment charges, stemming from an April search at his Broad Street home.

Police said they found ammunition, 551 stamp bags of heroin, 16 bags of marijuana and two pistols, according to court papers. Young was not permitted to have a firearm and police said one of the guns appeared to have been subject to an attempt to scratch off its serial number.

Severe thunderstorms with hurricane-force winds could strike Pittsburgh region overnight before potential record heat | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Though Monday started warm and partly sunny, Western Pennsylvania is looking at the possibility of severe thunderstorms that could produce hurricane-force winds late Monday into Tuesday morning.

The storm won’t likely reach the Pittsburgh area until early Tuesday morning, National Weather Service meteorologist David Shallenberger said.

The system bringing this storm is expected to develop over Michigan and moving toward southwestern Pennsylvania later Monday evening.

“It’s looking more and more like it’s going to be a direct hit to eastern Ohio and southwestern Pennsylvania,” Mr. Shallenberger said. “There is some uncertainty on the exact track of this, but it does look like the Pittsburgh area is going to see some severe weather.”

Forecasters expect the main threat from the storm to be the winds, which could reach between 60 and 70 mph.

Hail or even small tornadoes are possibilities, too, Mr. Shallenberger said.

Gas prices hit new record high | The Hill

Gas prices hit a new record high on Sunday, climbing to a national average of $5.01 for a gallon of gas, according to AAA.

The average spiked about 16 cents from last week as summer rolled in and Americans started driving more for vacations, trips and outings.

Americans have watched prices at the pump soar since 2021 and then accelerate this year after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Now, gas prices have shattered records. In California, the average for a gallon of gas climbed to $6.43 on Sunday, the highest in the country.

Even states with typically lower averages, such as Texas and Mississippi, are seeing gas prices inch past $4.50 per gallon.

The latest record comes after inflation hit a 40-year high in May, driven by increases in government spending during the pandemic, international turmoil, disrupted supply chains and increased consumer demand in a period of post-COVID-19 restrictions.

Stock futures fall after Wall Street’s worst week since January

U.S. stock futures fell Sunday night as Wall Street tries to recover from one of its worst weeks of 2022.

Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 176 points, or 0.6%, while S&P 500 futures slid 0.95%. Nasdaq 100 futures pulled back by 1.5%.

The major averages last week posted their biggest weekly declines since late January. The Dow and S&P 500 fell 4.6% and 5.1%, respectively, while the Nasdaq Composite lost 5.6%.

A chunk of those losses came Friday, when hotter-than-expected U.S. inflation data spooked investors. The Dow dropped 880 points, or 2.7%. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq lost 2.9% and 3.5%, respectively.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday that the U.S. consumer price index rose last month by 8.6% from a year ago, its fastest increase since December 1981. That gain topped economists’ expectations. The so-called core CPI, which strips out food and energy prices, also came in above estimates at 6%.

On top of that, the preliminary June reading for the University of Michigan’s consumer sentiment index registered at a record low of 50.2.

Port Authority rebrands to Pittsburgh Regional Transit | TribLIVE.com

After more than 60 years as the Port Authority of Allegheny County, the region’s largest public transportation provider announced a rebrand on Thursday to Pittsburgh Regional Transit.

“We stand at the very beginning of a new era in public transportation,” said Pittsburgh Regional Transit CEO Katharine Kelleman at a press conference in Downtown Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh Regional Transit, or PRT, will make some changes to the bus, light-rail, and incline system that currently serves Allegheny County and some communities on the county’s border. Most noticeably, PRT will be moving to a new, and more consistent color scheme.

All PRT buses will be teal and yellow. Kelleman said that Port Authority buses since 2004-5 have been different colors, which can be confusing to riders at times. Port Authority buses are red, yellow, green, and purple.

Westmoreland County commissioners briefly walked out of their public meeting Thursday after an audience member sitting in the front row shouted out an objection, claiming commissioners violated the state’s open meeting law.

The voting session was recessed for about 30 minutes to meet requirements of Pennsylvania’s Sunshine Law, which was amended by state lawmakers last year to require public bodies to post meeting agendas online at least 24 hours prior to the session.

Thursday’s 16-page agenda was posted on the county website at 2:18 p.m. Wednesday for the meeting that was to start at 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

“We just recessed and reconvened, waited for that 24-hour period to hit the mark, and came back,” said Commissioner Sean Kertes.

Watch Live: House Jan. 6 committee reveals new details in hearing on Capitol assault

In a recording of Attorney General William Barr testimony, he said he told former President Donald Trump that his claims of a stolen election were “bullsh**.”

The public hearing of the House Jan. 6  committee kicked off Thursday night with never-before-seen videos of testimony of some of the major players in the Trump administration, including former Attorney General William Barr saying he told former President Donald Trump that his claims of a stolen election were “bullsh**.”

“I had three discussions with the president that I can recall,” Barr said in his testimony.  “…I made it clear that i did not agree with the idea of saying the election was stolen and putting out this stuff, which I told the president was bullsh**. And I didn’t want to be a part of it and that’s one of the reasons that went into me deciding to leave when I did. I observed, I think it was Dec. 1, that you can’t live in a world where the incumbent administration stays in power based on its view, unsupported by specific evidence. that there was fraud in the election.”

Committee chair Rep. Bennie Thompson and vice chair Rep. Liz Cheney in their extraordinary opening statements detailed what Cheney called a “conspiracy” – and how many people were involved. Cheney said there were Republican members of Congress who sought pardons for their actions on Jan. 6.

Cheney had harsh words for her fellow Republicans who were involved and those who have fallen in line since the attack: “There will come a day when Donald Trump is gone but your dishonor will remain.”
