Passenger plane pilots ‘fall asleep at 37,000 feet’ and fly past airport – YouTube

Two pilots on an Ethiopian Airlines flight reportedly fell asleep and missed their landing, according to the commercial aviation news site Aviation Herald.

The Boeing 737-80 was en route to Ethiopia from Sudan on Monday when the pilots dozed off, causing the aircraft to fly past the runway at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport.

Air traffic control tried to contact the crew multiple times but could not reach anyone, Aviation Herald reported. Eventually, an alarm sounded in the plane waking the sleeping pilots, according to the news site.

The pilots safely landed the plane about 25 minutes later.

Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest airline, did not confirm that the pilots fell asleep but said it received a report about a flight temporarily losing communication with air traffic control.

“The flight later landed safely after communication was restored,” the airline said in a statement.

The involved crew was “removed from operation” pending an investigation, the statement continued.

An Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737-800, registration ET-AOB performing flight ET-343 from Khartoum (Sudan) to Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), was enroute at FL370 when the pilots fell asleep. The aircraft continued past the top of descent maintaining FL370 and continued along the FMC route set up for an approach to runway 25L without descending however. ATC tried to contact the crew numerous times without success. After overflying runway 25L at FL370 the autopilot disconnected, the disconnect wailer woke the crew up who then maneouvered the aircraft for a safe landing on runway 25L about 25 minutes after overflying the runway at FL370.

The aircraft remained on the ground for about 2.5 hours before departing for its next flight.

ADS-B data confirm the information, The Aviation Herald received, showing the aircraft maintained FL370 until after overflying the runway before the aircraft began to descend and maneouver for another approach.

On Aug 20th 2022 the airline confirmed the incident advising that both pilots have been suspended pending further investigation. Appropriate action will be taken based on the outcome of the investigation.

Local woman dies after head-on collision with Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus

KENNEDY TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A woman was killed and another person was injured after the car they were traveling in collided head-on with a Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus.

According to Pittsburgh Regional Transit spokesperson Adam Brandolph, the crash happened on McCoy Road at Neville Avenue in Kennedy Township around 4:12 p.m. Friday.

The passenger of the car, identified by the Medical Examiner’s Office as 54-year-old Helen Ringeisen, from Bridgeville, died at a hospital from injuries she sustained in the crash.

Brandolph said the driver of the car was also taken to a local hospital with injuries.

Port Authority police are investigating.

Driver takes off after crashing into tree in Westmoreland County

 

UNITY TOWNSHIP, Pa. —

State police said a man took off after a crash in Unity Township, Westmoreland County.

The crash happened a little after 11:20 a.m. Wednesday on State Route 119 north of Rizzo Road.

Police said the man was expected to be charged with causing an accident involving damage to an unattended vehicle or property.

Man charged, allegedly drove deceased woman around Pittsburgh before leaving her in car for days

MCCANDLESS TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Police said a woman’s body was driven around Pittsburgh for hours before being left in a car outside her home for two days.

Patrick McCurry is charged with abuse of a corpse.

Nicole Dull’s body was found in the passenger seat of her car about two months ago, in the parking lot of a McCandless apartment building.

On-duty Pennsylvania State Police trooper charged with DUI – CBS Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — A Pennsylvania State Police trooper is accused of driving intoxicated while on duty.

State police announced Thursday that Joshua Ravel, who is assigned to the York barracks, was charged with DUI and driving on roadways laned for traffic. Law enforcement said he was found to be under the influence of alcohol during his shift on Aug. 15.

He has been suspended without pay pending the outcome of his case, police said in the release.

Ravel has been assigned to the York barracks since graduating from the academy in June 2020.

KDKA Radio Morning Show host Kevin Battle let go by Audacy as part of layoffs

Kevin Battle, co-host of the popular “KDKA Radio Morning Show,” has been let go by the station’s parent company Audacy, Inc. in an apparent cost cutting move. Battle joined the 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. show as a co-host with Larry Richert in March 2020.

Also let go by the company was WDSY-FM (Y-108) “Y’d Awake” morning show co-host Kristen Buccigrossi. She had been on the morning show since 2018. Before that she worked in the company’s promotions department for 10 years.

Each of their final appearances on their respective shows happened on Tuesday.

“It came as a complete shock to me,” Battle said. “Everything seemed to be firing on all cylinders with the show. Larry and I get along great. The show was over on Tuesday and the boss said ‘Hey, I need to talk to you’ and that’s how it went down.”

4 people, including firefighters, hurt in massive fire in Beaver County – WPXI

ROCHESTER, Pa. — At least four people, including firefighters, are hurt as crews continue to battle a massive fire in Beaver County.

Two buildings are on fire in the 100 block of Brighton Avenue in Rochester.

Three firefighters were also taken to a hospital with shoulder and leg injuries.

They’re all expected to be OK.

Rochester Assistant Fire Chief Mike Mamone said the fire started in an apartment and then spread to an antique shop and other parts of the buildings.

Mamone said crews are using a county drone so they can better see where the water is most effective.

They also have brought in tankers for extra water supply.

Pittsburgh police searching for man wanted in connection with attack on elderly man – WPXI

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh police detectives are asking for the public’s help to identify a man wanted in connection with an attack on an elderly man.

Police are searching for the male with blond hair and a blue t-shirt.

Police said the attack happened on Grandview Avenue in Mount Washington around 9:30 p.m. on July 11.

According to police, the victim said he was assaulted on the steps of the Carnegie Library and was knocked unconscious. He took himself to the hospital the next day and had several injuries, including fractured ribs, head and chest injuries.

Pittsburgh police searching for vehicle after armed carjacking in Shadyside – WPXI

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh police are searching for a vehicle after an armed carjacking on Wednesday night.

Police were called to the 400 block of Shady Avenue at 8:15 p.m.

According to a release, a vehicle was taken at gunpoint in the area between Sellers and Howe streets.

Police are searching for a 2009 maroon Honda Accord with an Ohio license plate, with the plate number FMZ4144.

1 man hospitalized after shooting in Penn Hills area

A police presence is responded to two nearby scenes for reports of shots fired.

ALLEGHENY COUNTY, Pa. — A man was sent to a hospital after a shooting in the Penn Hills area.

Police responded to reports of a shooting at the 1600 block of Brushton Avenue in Penn Hills.

A man who was shot in the arm and foot was found nearby and was taken to the hospital.

GM is recalling hundreds of thousands of vehicles because of a problem with third-row seatbelts.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicated on Aug. 11 that GM is recalling 2021-2022 Cadillac Escalades, Chevrolet Suburbans, Tahoes and GMC Yukons that have third-row seats.

“The rivet that retains the buckle to the mounting bracket in the left or right side third-row seat belt buckle assembly may have been improperly formed,” NHTSA indicated.

The recall affects 484,155 vehicles, according to NHTSA. NHTSA said that while GM “is not aware of any accidents or injuries related” to the seatbelts, the car maker did receive several field reports that could be related to the problem.

The administration advised that “dealers will inspect the rivet head formation on both the left and right side third-row seat belt buckle assemblies and replace seat belt buckle assemblies, as necessary, free of charge.”

GM could not be reached for comment late Tuesday evening.

PennDOT gives drivers a chance to avoid license suspension

PITTSBURGH —

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is giving a second chance to certain drivers who are facing a license suspension.

PennDOT just launched a new Driver Improvement School course for Pennsylvanians who have a lot of points on their driving records or a conviction for excessive speeding.

Now, they can get a hearing where a determination will be made on whether they should get the suspension or if they could benefit from the new driver improvement program.

10-year-old boy falls off roof of Sheraden branch of Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh – CBS Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — A 10-year-old boy fell off the roof of the Sheraden branch of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh Public Safety said Monday that the boy climbed onto the roof and fell while he was playing. Officials said the boy ran home after falling but was later taken to a local hospital.

He suffered cuts and bruises and was in fair condition when he was taken to the hospital, Pittsburgh Public Safety said.

First lady Jill Biden tests positive for COVID-19 – ABC News

First lady Jill Biden has tested positive for COVID-19 while on vacation with the president and their family, according to her office.

Jill Biden tested negative on Monday during her routine testing, and then developed “cold-like symptoms” Monday night, according to her communications director, Elizabeth Alexander.

“She tested negative again on a rapid antigen test, but a PCR test came back positive,” Alexander said in a statement Tuesday morning.

3 men charged with trafficking ‘mass amounts’ of fentanyl into Allegheny and Somerset counties | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Overseen by the state Attorney General’s Office, an investigation into William Ely, 41, of Wilkinsburg and two mid-level dealers, Jaylon Brock, 32, of Pittsburgh and Tony Burnsworth, 44, of Somerset County began in May 2021.

During the investigation, detectives discovered that Ely was supplying approximately 150 bricks of heroin/fentanyl, or up to 7,500 doses, a week to Mr. Brock and Mr. Burnsworth. The two recipients would then sell the drugs on the streets — Mr. Brock in Pittsburgh and Mr. Burnsworth in Somerset County, the attorney general’s office said.

One person injured in early morning house fire in Armstrong County – CBS Pittsburgh

KITTANNING (KDKA) – An early morning fire in Armstrong County sent at least one person to the hospital.

Dispatch confirmed the person was taken to the hospital and crews remain on the scene.

Their condition is unknown.

The fire happened on Water Street in Kittanning.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — One person was hit by a train in Washington County on Tuesday.

Washington County 911 said crews were called to the train-pedestrian crash in the area of Union and 1st streets in California Borough around 9:15 p.m.

The person was taken to a local hospital. No update was available on their condition.

81-year-old woman dies in Washington County house fire – WPXI

CECIL TOWNSHIP, Pa. — An elderly woman was killed in a house fire Tuesday morning in Washington County, a Cecil Township fire chief at the scene told Channel 11.

The Washington County Coroner identified the woman who died as Rose Churray, 81.

The 911 call for the fire at a home on Swihart Road in Cecil Township came in at 5:25 a.m.

Fire officials said an elderly woman was found dead inside the home after the fire was put out.

Man robbed of cash after overnight assault in Downtown Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH — Police are investigating after a man reported being assaulted and robbed early Tuesday morning.

The unidentified victim flagged down police at around 3:15 a.m. at Liberty and 6th avenues. The victim said two men assaulted him and took an undisclosed amount of cash from him before fleeing the scene.

There was no information on the extent of the victim’s injuries.

Police: Man shoots, kills himself inside Center Township police vehicle – CBS Pittsburgh

CENTER TOWNSHIP, Pa. (KDKA) – A man is dead after state police said he shot himself inside a Center Township police vehicle on Friday.

The Beaver County district attorney said Center Township officers served a search warrant at a home on Geneva Drive shortly after noon and took a man into custody.

Sources said the man resisted arrest and had a gun. Police disarmed him, handcuffed him, then put him inside the police vehicle.

On the way to the police station, the district attorney said the man shot a gun, then died.

Police have not said how the man got a gun inside the car.

Allegheny County Courthouse evacuated after bomb threat – WPXI

PITTSBURGH — The Allegheny County Courthouse was evacuated “out of an abundance of caution” after a bomb threat Monday, Allegheny County Communications Director Amie Downs told Channel 11.

Downs said an anonymous call came in Monday morning that there was a bomb inside the courthouse. About 250 people were forced to evacuate.

Allegheny County Sheriff Kevin Kraus said about half a dozen bomb-sniffing K9s were brought in to inspect the building.

(CNN)President Joe Biden will sign a sweeping $750 billion health care, tax and climate bill into law at the White House on Tuesday — marking a major victory for his administration and the Democratic Party ahead of the midterm elections.

Tuesday’s ceremony in the State Dining Room is just one of many events that will follow focused on the roll out of the new law, according to the White House.
“In the coming weeks, the President will host a Cabinet meeting focused on implementing the Inflation Reduction Act, will travel across the country to highlight how the bill will help the American people, and will host an event to celebrate the enactment of the bill at the White House on September 6,” a White House statement said.
The Inflation Reduction Act accomplishes several key Biden legislative agenda items, representing the largest climate investment in American history and making major changes to health policy by giving Medicare the power for the first time to negotiate the prices of certain prescription drugs and extending expiring health care subsidies for three years. The legislation will reduce the deficit, be paid for through new taxes — including a 15% minimum tax on large corporations and a 1% tax on stock buybacks — and boost the Internal Revenue Service’s ability to collect.
