Building collapses in Monessen during storm – CBS Pittsburgh

MONESSEN, Pa. (KDKA) – A man who narrowly escaped a building collapse in Monessen said he heard a rumble of thunder then bricks started falling.

The pile of rubble in the alley and mounds of debris seen in what used to be windows give you an idea of the level of structural failure that occurred when parts of the old Mon Valley Independent lost their battle against gravity and time.

The man didn’t want to show his face but said he had an up close and personal look at the collapse as he walked through the alley behind the building.

“I was just walking through the ally and it just started coming down,” he said.

Monessen police and fire were at the scene almost immediately. The collapse closed alleys in the area. Monessen Police Chief David Yuhasz said given the state of many buildings in Monessen, this isn’t surprising and it’s lucky to have happened when it did.

UPS: One of the biggest strikes in American history is brewing – CNN

New York (CNN Business)Over the past year, the nascent labor movements at mighty corporations like Starbucks and Amazon have grabbed national attention. But less well-known is a looming high-stakes clash between one of America’s oldest unions and the world’s biggest package courier.

Contract negotiations are set to begin in the spring between UPS and the Teamsters Union ahead of their current contract’s expiration at the end of July, 2023. Already, before the talks have even started, labor experts are predicting that the drivers and package handlers will go on strike.
“The question is how long it will be,” said Todd Vachon, professor of Labor Relations at Rutgers. “The union’s president ran and won on taking a more militant approach. Even if they’re very close [to a deal], the rank and file will be hungry to take on the company.”
If that happens, a strike at UPS would affect nearly every household in the country. An estimated 6% of the nation’s gross domestic product is moved in UPS trucks every year. The explosive growth of online retail has made the company and its drivers more crucial than ever to the nation’s struggling supply chain. Beyond the company’s home deliveries, it also delivers many of the goods found in stores, factories and offices.

Large drug bust in Wilkinsburg leads to 1 arrest; police still searching for another suspect – WPXI

WILKINSBURG, Pa. — A massive drug bust in Wilkinsburg led to felony charges against two people.

In June 2022, Wilkinsburg and Penn Hills detectives and narcotics agents with the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office launched an investigation into 57-year-old Douglas Curry.

That same month, police said Curry was stopped and detained in a traffic stop in Wilkinsburg. Police said Curry was in possession of crack cocaine.

“2,000 stamp bags of fentanyl is a large quantity for anyone to possess. It just takes a small dose of fentanyl for someone to overdose — that’s $20,000 worth of fentanyl. That saved many lives getting that off the street today,” said Wilkinsburg Detective Sgt. Doug Yuhouse.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot says she’d be ‘happy to drain Texas’ of all its residents: ‘We’ll rent the buses’ | Fox News

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said on Thursday that she’d be “happy to drain Texas of all its residents” and give them a warm welcome to Chicago.

Democrat Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said that she’d be “happy to drain Texas of all its residents” and welcome them to Chicago after Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott sent two buses with migrants onboard to Chicago’s Union Station.

Lightfoot made the comments during a Thursday press conference after the migrants’ arrival.

“I’m happy to take and drain Texas, of all of its residents,” Lightfoot said. “I wouldn’t want to live in a state with a governor like that. I certainly wouldn’t want to live in a state where they are doing everything they can to strip people of their basic rights. And let’s not forget about what they’ve done to women and others who were seeking reproductive health care.”
