Planes flip at Orlando Executive Airport, leaving 1 dead

ORLANDO, Fla. —

One person is dead and another was sent to the hospital after a plane at the Orlando Executive Airport flipped over during severe weather Thursday, according to the Orlando Fire Department.

The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed two people were inside the plane when it flipped over at about 5 p.m. The plane was holding for takeoff on a taxiway while the weather was unfavorable, according to a spokesperson for the airport.

The spokesperson said another plane that flipped over did not have anyone inside it.

“Unfortunately, that system moved in so fast, it was so severe with very heavy gusty winds that it actually flipped the airplane,” said Orlando Executive Airport director and air traffic controller, Judith-Ann Jarrette.

WESA, WYEP content staff announce intention to unionize with SAG-AFTRA | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The folks behind some of Pittsburgh’s most prominent radio offerings just announced their plan to unionize.

Earlier Tuesday, the content staff at Pittsburgh Community Broadcasting Corporation — the nonprofit organization that owns both 90.5 WESA, Pittsburgh’s NPR affiliate, and 91.3 WYEP, an independent music station — delivered a petition to management that a supermajority of eligible staff had signed declaring their intention to form a union, according to a SAG-AFTRA press release.

“We will approach this process in the spirit of collaboration and professionalism and urge PCBC leadership to do the same by voluntarily recognizing the union and begin bargaining in good faith with us,” the content staff’s organizing committee said via that press release.

“As a union town, Pittsburgh’s public radio stations should be union shops.”

PITTSBURGH — The Pitt Panthers defeated West Virginia University 38-31 in the Backyard Brawl.

Man shot, killed when confronting Pittsburgh police officer with gun during search for missing woman – WPXI

 

PITTSBURGH — A search for a missing woman took a deadly turn when a man was shot and killed after confronting a Pittsburgh police officer with a gun Thursday night.

Pittsburgh police responded to the 1400 block of Rydal Street in Pittsburgh’s Westwood neighborhood around 8:58 p.m. to assist Robinson Township police with locating a missing woman.

The woman from Robinson Township was reported missing and endangered by family earlier that evening at 6:45 p.m.

Police said the missing woman was found inside the home. It’s unclear if she was being held against her will, or what brought her to the home. We’re working to learn more about those circumstances.

Charges against Eric Fairman, 26, were filed early Thursday morning

MCKEESPORT, Pa. —

Eric Fairman, a teacher at Founder’s Hall Middle School in McKeesport, is accused of inappropriately touching four different boys over the span of several years in his role as a youth coach.

Charges against Eric Fairman, 26, of Pittsburgh, were filed early Thursday morning for eleven different incidents.

Man shot, killed inside East Hills apartment – WPXI

PITTSBURGH — A man is dead after a shooting in Pittsburgh’s East Hills neighborhood Thursday night.

The shooting happened just before 10:45 p.m. in the 2100 block of Park Hill Drive.

When officers responded, they found a man who had been shot inside an apartment. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Man drives to East Pittsburgh Sunoco for help after being shot

State police have released new information about an overnight shooting in East Pittsburgh.

The victim told police four people surrounded his car on Western Avenue around 11 p.m. Wednesday night and opened fire on him.

He then drove to a Sunoco on Lincoln Highway and sought help from the gas station’s employees.

The victim, who was not identified, suffered a gunshot wound to the arm and is expected to be OK.

So far, no arrests have been announced.

Ravil Maganov, 67, was being treated at the hospital after he suffered a heart attack.

The chairman of Russia’s second-largest oil company, Lukoil, died Thursday after reportedly falling from the window of a Moscow hospital where he was being treated after suffering a heart attack.

Ravil Maganov, 67, fell from a sixth-floor window at the Central Clinical Hospital around 7 a.m. local time, the state-run Tass news agency reported.

Ford pickup recall

DETROIT (AP) — Ford is recalling more than 277,000 pickup trucks and cars in the U.S. because the rear view camera lens can get cloudy and reduce visibility for the driver.

The recall covers certain F-250, 350 and 450 trucks as well as the Lincoln Continental, all from the 2017 through 2020 model years. The recalled vehicles have a 360-degree camera system.

Ford says the anti-reflective lens on the cameras can degrade, causing a cloudy image. The company says it has more than 8,800 warranty reports in the U.S. due to the problem.

Dealers will replace the camera at no cost to owners. Ford will notify owners by letter starting Sept. 12.

According to Allegheny County 911, crews were called to the area of New Beaver and Eckert Street in Pittsburgh’s Woods Run neighborhood for reports of the accident.

Our crew at the scene saw the roof of the truck at an upright angle, the truck itself underneath the overpass.

Man shot, killed in Mt. Oliver – YouTube


MT. OLIVER, Pa. (KDKA) — One person is dead after a shooting in the borough of Mt. Oliver.

Allegheny County police said officials were notified of a shooting on Dawes Street around 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

First responders found a man who was shot in the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was later identified by the Medical Examiner’s Office as 20-year-old Timothy Coates.

Police are investigating. It is not clear if there are any suspects.

Man arrested following burglary at Downtown Pittsburgh McDonald’s

PITTSBURGH —

A man was arrested following a burglary at the McDonald’s on the 500 block of Liberty Avenue in Downtown Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh Public Safety said police got a call about a possible break-in at the restaurant around 1 a.m. Tuesday.

The man was arrested and taken to the Allegheny County Jail.

His identity has not been released.

Target 11 sources: As many as 100 Pittsburgh officers failed new firearms test – WPXI

— In August, sources tell Target 11 that as many as 100 of the approximately 830 Pittsburgh police officers couldn’t pass the state’s new firearms recertification test.

The municipal officers’ education and training commission changed the scoring this year, making it more difficult, according to some officers.

Officers must complete a short course and a long course. They shoot from distances as far as 75 feet and as close as three feet. They are also required to shoot while standing and while kneeling, and they must fire each round in a certain amount of time.

Sources tell Target 11 they don’t believe any officers will be fired over this.

Officers will go through retraining until they’re able to pass the test.

The city declined to release any numbers, and said we would have to file a right-to-know request, which 11 News has done.

1-year-old Plum Borough child in critical condition after fall

PLUM, Pa. —A 1-year-old child was rushed to the hospital in critical condition Tuesday after falling from a window in Plum, police said.

Allegheny County police homicide detectives responded to a home on Winchester Avenue around 6:30 p.m. and are investigating the fall.

It’s unclear what lead up to this child’s fall or how many feet the child may have fallen.

Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 is working to learn more about the child’s condition.

Anyone with information is asked to call Allegheny County Police at their tip line at 1-833-all tips.

Man enters guilty plea related to 2017 Youngwood house fire | TribLIVE.com

An Irwin man pleaded guilty Monday to a misdemeanor charge stemming from a 2017 fire at his former home in Youngwood.

Shaun Wallace, 41, was ordered to serve two years on probation and six months of house arrest for his involvement in the second of two fires police said were set at 222 S. 3rd St. on Sept. 8, 2017.

Felony counts of arson, reckless burning and risking catastrophe were dismissed as part of a plea deal approved by Westmoreland County Common Pleas Court Judge Tim Krieger

President Joe Biden is planning a Labor Day trip to Pittsburgh, the White House announced.

The location wasn’t specified, but in a statement, the White House on Monday said Biden “will deliver remarks to celebrate Labor Day and the dignity of American workers.”

Biden will also travel to Milwaukee that day.

Police: Man injured in Hempfield road rage incident | TribLIVE.com

A man was hurt Friday after a witness said he tried to stop a motorist from leaving what was described as a road rage incident in a Hempfield shopping plaza, according to court papers.

State police made an arrest within 20 minutes after finding the suspect in Hempfield Plaza along Route 30. Derek R. Walters, 41, of Hempfield, is charged with aggravated assault by vehicle, reckless endangerment and related offenses.

Troopers were called at 10:30 a.m. and found the injured man being treated by Mutual Aid paramedics. He was taken to a hospital for treatment of road rash and a cut on his head, police said.

The man told investigators that Walters tried to pass him on Hempfield Plaza Boulevard, which runs behind Walmart and Sam’s Club, according to court papers. A confrontation between the two motorists ensued nearby in a parking lot and Walters retrieved a tire iron, which police said he used to hit the other man’s vehicle.

The injured man attempted to stop Walters from leaving the scene by holding on to his Jeep Cherokee but was dragged by the SUV as Walters drove away, according to court papers.

Artemis I launch: Scheduled moon rocket launch scrubbed – WPXI

The launch window opened at 8:33 a.m. EDT.

During a news conference hours after the space agency scrubbed the launch, officials confirmed that they are targeting Friday at the earliest but also warned that the launch could be delayed until September, The Associated Press reported.

In addition to an issue with the No. 3 engine not bleeding correctly, the weather was also a factor in the decision to postpone the launch, CNN reported.

“There were also a series of weather issues throughout the launch window. We would have been a no-go for weather at the beginning of the window due to precipitation. Later on in the window, we would have been no-go for lightning within the launchpad area,” Mike Sarafin, Artemis I mission manager, said.

Canonsburg parents charged with homicide after 3-month-old girl dies from fentanyl toxicity – WPXI

CANONSBURG, Pa. — A mother and father from Canonsburg have both been charged with homicide after their 3-month-old baby died from fentanyl toxicity, the Washington County District Attorney announced Monday.

James May, 31, and Shannon McKnight, 23, were arrested on Aug. 19 after officers found the couple in the rafters of an attic.

On Aug. 11, police were called for reports of a 3-month-old girl not breathing at a home on First Street.

The child was pronounced dead at the hospital. The district attorney said toxicology results showed positive results for fentanyl.

The couple’s other child, a 16-month-old boy, was taken to Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh, where cocaine and fentanyl were found in his system.

Police said they found fentanyl and cocaine, along with other drug paraphernalia, in the house.

A preliminary hearing date has not yet been set.

Both May and McKnight were already facing charges of felony child endangerment and misdemeanor counts of reckless endangerment, drug possession and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Three teenagers from the Pittsburgh area taken to the hospital following Mercer County crash

SPRINGFIELD, Pa. —

Three teenagers from the Pittsburgh area were taken to a hospital following a crash in Mercer County on Friday afternoon.

The crash happened along Tower Road in Springfield Township.

The vehicle slid off the road on a curve, hit a tree and then overturned.

The driver was taken to a hospital for medical evaluation.

Also taken to a hospital were the woman’s two passengers, a 19-year-old woman from West Newton and an 18-year-old woman from Pittsburgh.

None of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening.

East Huntingdon woman accused of $13,500 theft from Greensburg YWCA thrift shop | TribLIVE.com

An East Huntingdon woman is accused by police of taking $13,500 from the YWCA Thrift Shop in Greensburg while she worked there, according to court papers.

Amy S. Yemc-Gera, 53, was in charge of making nightly deposits, police said. She is charged with theft and receiving stolen property.

An accountant for the YWCA told police that 43 cash deposits between May and August were missing after organization officials noticed a missing deposit earlier this month. YWCA officials said on each occasion Yemc-Gera was working and in charge of depositing the cash, according to court papers.

Officials told authorities that after the missing deposit was discovered, they contacted Yemc-Gera about the situation and she claimed to have misplaced the money, but found it and took it to the bank. There was never any record of a deposit, police said.

She worked there for two years. It was unclear if she was still an employee.

Employee who attempted to disarm gunman among those killed in supermarket shooting, police say – ABC News

An employee who attempted to disarm a gunman was among the victims of a shooting inside a Safeway supermarket in Bend, Oregon, police said Monday.

Two people were killed in the shooting Sunday evening, police said. The alleged gunman was also found dead inside the store of a self-inflicted gunshot, police said.

The two victims were identified Monday as 84-year-old Bend resident Glenn Edward Bennett and 66-year-old Donald Ray Surrett, a Bend resident and Safeway employee. Two others suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to Sheila Miller, communications director of Bend County Police Department.

The incident was reported just after 7 p.m. local time at The Forum Shopping Center in Bend, a small city about 130 miles southeast of Oregon’s capital, Salem.

Movie Theaters Offering $3 Tickets on Sept. 3 to Battle Box Office Blues – The Hollywood Reporter

 

 

Theaters want people to put away their Labor Day weekend picnic baskets and see a movie for just $3 or less on Sept. 3 in celebration of the first-ever National Cinema Day.

More than 3,000 movie theaters will participate in the one-day event, which will apply to tickets for all formats, including Imax. Circuits offering the special pricing include AMC Entertainment, Cinemark Theatres and the embattled Regal Cinemas.

The promotion is the brainchild of the Cinema Foundation, a new non-profit organization that’s affiliated with the National Association of Theatre Owners.

At least 1 person hospitalized after shooting in a Pittsburgh neighborhood

At least one person has been taken to a hospital after a shooting in a Pittsburgh neighborhood.

Allegheny County dispatchers confirmed that police and medics were called to Brabec Street in Troy Hill at approximately 9:10 p.m. Sunday.

Police said they found a man suffering a gunshot wound to the chest and lower extremities when they arrived.

The man was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

Police investigating bank robbery in Brookline

Police are investigating a bank robbery that happened Friday morning in Brookline.

The man suspected in the robbery presented a note that demanded money and threatened to use a firearm, police said. He also verbally threatened to use a gun, but police said no firearm was seen.

Police said he left with an undisclosed amount of money. The Pittsburgh Bureau of Police’s violent crimes unit is investigating the incident.
