Jennifer Pickens: Melania Trump makes strong case for president in Republican Convention speech | Fox News

The star speaker Tuesday at the Republican National Convention was first lady Melania Trump. Standing on the shoulders of past first ladies who have addressed political conventions, she raised the bar for convention speeches by her successors.

Mrs. Trump did a brilliant job making a compassionate case for keeping her husband in office, speaking from the newly renovated White House Rose Garden.

After nearly four years of traveling the world, entertaining at the White House, and giving countless remarks, this was Mrs. Trump’s most significant speech yet, addressing many issues on the minds of American families — COVID-19, the economy, education, racial unrest, and the future of our nation.

Kenosha shooting: Two people are dead and a third injured after an overnight shooting, police say – CNN

(CNN)Two people are dead and a third was injured in Kenosha, Wisconsin, following a shooting late Tuesday night, police said.

The shooting happened amid the third night of protests over the police shooting of 29-year-old Jacob Blake on Sunday evening.
On Tuesday, officers responded to reports of multiple gunshot victims around 11:45 p.m., the Kenosha Police Department said in a news release early Wednesday.
The person injured was taken to the hospital with “serious, but non-life threatening injuries,” police said.
An investigation into the shooting is ongoing and the names and ages of the victims are still being determined, according to the release.
Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth told The New York Times his office is investigating whether the shooting resulted from a conflict between demonstrators and a group of men with weapons who were protecting businesses.
CNN has reached out to the Kenosha Police Department and the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office.
Protests in Kenosha have been ongoing since Blake’s shooting. Wisconsin’s governor declared a state of emergency Tuesday after cars and buildings were set ablaze and called in 250 members of the National Guard to assist. Blake remains in the hospital but his family says he is paralyzed from the waist down. A family attorney said it would take a “miracle” for Blake to ever walk again.

Police: Johnstown woman charged after video shows ‘brutal attack’ of 12-year-old girl | WJAC

A Johnstown woman has been charged with felony aggravated assault after police say she filmed herself brutally attacking a 12-year-old girl. Authorities say 32-year-old Emily Sarver is facing charges related to aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and corruption of minors. According to the Richland Township Police Department, the investigation began in Oct. 2019 when the girl reported the assault to her school nurse.

Police say the video of the attack confirmed the same details the girl described to investigators.

Sarver waited for the girl to enter the living room at which point she began beating the girl in the head and face with her hands and a wooden spoon for about seven minutes while berating her with vulgar language, the complaint says.

The video shows Sarver grab the girl by her hair, throw her on the ground and continue assaulting her, the complaint says.

Former Jeannette hemp processor leaves behind empty building, unpaid fine, jilted workers | TribLIVE.com

Patriot Shield started operating in the warehouse in September without getting an occupancy permit or building inspection from the city. Farmers brought their hemp crop there to be dried into smokable hemp flowers, which taste like marijuana but lack the THC necessary to get users high.

Neighbors complained about the odor that emanated from the warehouse for weeks. It brought up to 200 jobs, but many workers started protesting outside of the building after not receiving paychecks.

That issue still has not been rectified, two former employees told the Tribune-Review. The state Department of Labor and Industry’s Bureau of Labor Law Compliance performed an audit of the company, according to a letter obtained by the Trib. The department did not respond to a request for comment about the pay situation.

First night of RNC 2020 was very effective, to media’s dismay

The first night of the Republican National Convention was, all in all, sensationally effective — and effective in ways that the mainstream media and its Twitter chatterers clearly found it impossible to understand.

America’s opinion leaders loathe Donald Trump so much that it remains a great puzzlement to them how he can retain the support of even 42 percent of the population, rather than, you know, zero.

The implicit theory they share is the “deplorables” theory — that anyone who wants Trump to be and remain president is, at root, a bad person or someone too easily tempted by false promises and evil lies.

If they had ears to listen, they might be able to understand it better after tonight. The message of Night One was twofold.

First, the case was that Trump has done many things to help individual people in extremis — working to release hostages, deregulating certain types of medical treatments, fighting entrenched interests, and leading a strong economy until COVID came along to kill it.

Twitterati laughed at the supposed awkwardness with which Trump interacted with frontline COVID workers and hostages, but what they missed was Trump’s good cheer as he talked to them. These exchanges were actually less weird than the ones last week in which Biden talked to party activists over Zoom.

And second, the case was that Democrats are supporters of urban chaos and socialist policies that will make American lives less safe and will help immiserate the American middle class.
