2 men charged with hindering investigation of Jeannette double shooting | TribLIVE.com

Two Westmoreland County men are charged with hindering apprehension and obstruction of justice for helping a Jeannette teenager dispose of two handguns after he allegedly shot and wounded two men last month.

Khalil L. Myers, 16, was arrested hours after the shootings at 4:46 p.m. Oct. 20 inside a house at 307 S. Third St. by Jeannette police and county detectives. He is charged as an adult with multiple criminal charges including two counts of attempted homicide.

On Thursday, city police charged Elijah S. Vento, 24, of Irwin, and Cedric M. Ward, 44, of Jeannette, for hiding evidence after the shooting and obstructing the investigation. Police allege Vento “disposed” of two handguns Myers possessed at the time of the shooting.

According to court documents, investigators spoke with both Vento and Ward at a home in the 300 block of North Pennsylvania Avenue in Greensburg, where they found Myers had fled after the shooting that wounded Austin Mathias, 19, of Crabtree, and Anthony Bittinger, 21, of Greensburg. Both Mathias and Bittinger were treated at Forbes Regional Hospital in Monroeville for their wounds.

21 indicted in local cocaine, heroin ring supplied from N.J. | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

A federal grand jury has indicted 21 people on charges of dealing drugs as part of a trafficking organization operating in Allegheny, Washington and Fayette counties.

They are charged with dealing cocaine, crack, heroin and fentanyl, the U.S. attorney’s office said, following a seven-month wiretap investigation of 10 cellphones and dubbed “Operation Skyfall” by federal agents and police.

Authorities said the ring was led by Marcus Brown of Washington, Pa., who was arrested in October after a trip to pick up drugs in a New Jersey hotel parking lot. It was active across Western Pennsylvania and supplied out of New Jersey.

According to a criminal complaint filed in October, Mr. Brown and Steve Law IV obtained cocaine and heroin from New Jersey suppliers and distributed it in the Pittsburgh region, particularly in Washington County.

Gov. Wolf to veto bills on carrying, selling guns amid disasters | WTRF

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Gov. Tom Wolf’s office says he will veto legislation heading that would repeal long-standing laws intended to control the carrying of guns and prevent officials from shutting down firearms sales during disaster emergencies declared by a governor.

The bills are the latest to pass the Republican Legislature that sought to limit the Democratic governor’s powers during the existing coronavirus disaster emergency and beyond.

Wolf’s office says declarations help the administration fight the public health crises and don’t affect rights.

One bill would repeal a provision that allows the governor to suspend sales during an emergency.

The other would prevent firearms businesses from being shuttered.

Some Catholics sounding alarm about Biden administration, conflicts with moral teachings | Fox News

Some Catholic groups and leaders are warning that President-elect Biden would, despite being a member of the faith, enact harmful policies and create confusion about church teachings.

Just after the election, Archbishop Jose Gomez issued a statement congratulating Biden, saying “he joins the late President John F. Kennedy as the second United States president to profess the Catholic faith.”

However, Gomez, who serves as president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), later announced a working group in preparation for Biden’s presidency, and issued a statement about the “problems” created by a Catholic president who supports certain progressive policies.

“The president-elect has given us reason to believe that his faith commitments will move him to support some good policies. This includes policies of immigration reform, refugees and the poor, and against racism, the death penalty, and climate change,” he said at the USCCB Fall Assembly on Nov. 17.

8 injured in active shooter incident at Wisconsin’s Mayfair Mall – ABC News

Seven adults and one teenager were taken to the hospital with injuries, Wauwatosa Chief of Police Barry Weber said in a statement. The extent of their injuries is unknown, he said.

The perpetrator is “at large,” Wauwatosa Mayor Dennis McBride told ABC News.

The incident began just before 3 p.m. local time, officials said, when officers were called for an active shooter situation at the mall. Witnesses reported hearing up to a dozen gunshots, officials said. The shooter was no longer at the scene when emergency personnel arrived, Weber said.

Georgia’s Floyd County fires election director after finding uncounted ballots

The Board of Elections in Georgia’s Floyd County voted Thursday to oust Chief of Elections Clerk Robert Brady after officials found thousands of uncounted ballots.

Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger blamed the problem on Floyd County election officials failing to upload votes from a memory card in a ballot-scanning machine.

GEORGIA ELECTION AUDIT FINDS 3,039 MORE UNCOUNTED BALLOTS IN 2 COUNTIES

Raffensperger had initially asked for Brady to step down and Floyd County officials met to discuss the decision before firing him, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.

They cited at least two previous incidents over the past six months as the reasons for his termination.

During a hand audit in the Peach State, election officials uncovered more than 2,600 ballots that were not counted before the county’s initial certification, forcing election workers to rescan more than 8,000 ballots.

Investigation finds more than a half-million Pennsylvanians denied unemployment

NORTH VERSAILLES, Pa. — Channel 4 Action News Investigates has learned more than a half-million Pennsylvanians who applied for unemployment during the pandemic have still not been able to get it.For some, long waits for benefits have become long waits to appeal the denial of benefit

John Roman of North Versailles was laid off from his job as a school bus driver in March.Action News Investigates first told his story in April, when he was struggling to get benefits.”You can’t get through. Keep getting busy signals. I tried like four or five hours in one day,” Roman said at the time.

Eventually, the checks started coming. But in June, his case took a twist. The state Department of Labor and Industry sent him a letter saying he was ineligible for benefits and ordering him to pay back $3,000.The reason? The state said Roman took a leave of absence. But medical records show he was hospitalized for acute illness — pneumonia and COPD.So Roman filed an appeal, saying the state decision was incorrect. That was five months ago.

Asked what happened since then, Roman said: “Nothing. Nothing at all.”He’s called the state unemployment office repeatedly. He contacted his state legislator.”Mine’s at the bottom of the pile, I guess,” Roman said.In August, he finally got a callback from the state unemployment office.

An official left a voicemail message saying: “We have received the appeal information however it was not under review so that was a mistake on our part. You should receive information from us soon as again I have escalated this matter to a supervisor.”But Roman did not get a hearing until Monday, nearly three months after he received that voicemail message.”It’s wrong,” Roman said.In yet another twist, Roman was approved for unemployment after first being denied. But the state has been deducting the money he allegedly owes from the amount he is supposed to be collecting, leaving him with virtually nothing.”I could never understand their system,” Roman said.

Top state unemployment officials would not discuss specifics of Roman’s case but they were surprised when Action News Investigates told them how long he’s been waiting for his appeal.

“I do know the appeals office is still on time with everything so depending on the timing of when that was requested and what the actual circumstances are, that probably has a lot to do with it,” said Susan Dickinson, director of unemployment policy.

“John is emblematic of so many people who are so frustrated with the system and don’t know where to turn for help,” said Barney Oursler of the Mon Valley Unemployed Committee.

Oursler reached out to help Roman after seeing his initial story. He said the state made a mistake and Roman deserves to be paid. But even Oursler, who helped thousands of unemployed steelworkers in the 1980s, has hit a wall with Harrisburg.

“The system is failing people and that’s the frustration people have,” Oursler said.State officials said 32% of all Pennsylvanians filing unemployment claims during the pandemic — about 600,000 people — have been rejected.

There have been about 43,000 appeals filed.Five months after filing his appeal, Roman said he hopes he can finally get an answer.”It’s been very frustrating. There’s times I just lay down and close my eyes, is it a dream or is it reality? I’m finding out it’s reality,” Roman said.

The car driven by Moyle then collided head-on with a vehicle traveling south, the coroner said, and Moyle was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials say Moyle did not have a seatbelt on.

Hiring push is on at 84 Lumber, Pittsburgh agency tapped to create recruitment program

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh-based BLD Marketing on Thursday said it has created and launched a recruitment marketing program for 84 Lumber Co.

It is hiring for various positions due to increased residential construction and, as of Thursday, listed 478 open positions from labor to management on its website.

The Business Times recently reported that 84 Lumber said it topped $4 billion in annual sales for the first time in its history with projections to reach more than $4.5 billion by year-end. Judges toss Republican lawsuits in Arizona, Pennsylvania and Georgia – CNNPolitics

(CNN)State judges in Arizona and Pennsylvania and a federal judge in Georgia rejected election-related lawsuits Thursday from Republicans and the Trump campaign.

The hat trick of losses were the latest round of defeats for the Trump campaign in its long-shot and increasingly far-fetched bid to block President-elect Joe Biden’s win before the Electoral College certifies him as the next president.
One of the judges, a Trump appointee in Georgia, called the attempt by Republican-allied lawyers to block election results “quite striking,” refusing their attempt to stop Biden’s win there.
In Arizona, a state judge declined to audit votes in the state and delay the finalization of results, saying the lawsuit couldn’t be retooled and brought again. And in Pennsylvania, a state judge ordered the counting of more than absentee 2,000 ballots the Trump campaign wanted to exclude.
The rulings came with only a few hours between them on Thursday.
Losses for the Trump campaign have piled up on other recent days, including when nine cases from the Trump campaign or his allies were either denied or pulled last Friday, and when Trump-supporting voters dropped four lawsuits pushing fraud claims earlier this week.
Despite pledges by Trump campaign attorneys — including Rudy Giuliani — to continue the fight, nearly no viable post-election cases remain for the Trump campaign that could deprive Biden of the electoral votes to become president. Legal analysts have widely said Trump’s bids in court to change the election results will all fail.
One federal lawsuit now spearheaded by Giuliani lingers in Pennsylvania, but the judge who is considering it expressed skepticism on Tuesday that the commonwealth’s presidential vote should be discarded.

Sen. Rand Paul to Newsmax TV: Fauci Will ‘Keep Us Masked Until End of Time’

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., says the U.S. government should push hard to get a coronavirus vaccine released and Dr. Anthony Fauci is trying to slow down that process, saying the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases wants to ”keep us masked until the end of time.”

”The masks aren’t working, social distancing’s not working. What is my proof? The numbers. The numbers are going through the roof,” Paul said Thursday during an appearance on Newsmax TV‘s ”American Agenda.”

”So all these mask mandates have had no effect on it. The incidence of the virus has gotten worse since we’ve done lockdowns. We should not comfort ourselves with masks. We should push hard to get the vaccine released.

“I think it’s ready to go for those who are willing to sign an informed consent and voluntarily take it. And I think millions of people would sign up, and we would very quickly get to a large enough number that people would be more satisfied with the safety. . . . I would get it out there, I wouldn’t wait.

A sign of America’s future under Biden? This transition team member has questioned the First Amendment | Fox News

The leader of President-elect Joe Biden’s transition team for federal media outlets has, in the past, publicly endorsed both weakening the First Amendment and governments’ use of propaganda on their own citizens.

Richard Stengel, a former State Department official under President Obama and a past editor of Time magazine, argued in a Washington Post op-ed last October that “America needs a hate speech law.” But he also raised questions about why the First Amendment protects things like book burnings and fake news.

“As a government official traveling around the world championing the virtues of free speech, I came to see how our First Amendment standard is an outlier,” he wrote. “Even the most sophisticated Arab diplomats that I dealt with did not understand why the First Amendment allows someone to burn a Koran.”

Trump, allies make frantic steps to overturn Biden victory

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump and his allies are taking increasingly frantic steps to subvert the results of the 2020 election, including summoning state legislators to the White House as part of a longshot bid to overturn Joe Biden’s victory.

Among other last-ditch tactics: personally calling local election officials who are trying to rescind their certification votes in Michigan, suggesting in a legal challenge that Pennsylvania set aside the popular vote there and pressuring county officials in Arizona to delay certifying vote tallies.

Election law experts see it as the last, dying gasps of the Trump campaign and say Biden is certain to walk into the Oval Office come January. But there is great concern that Trump’s effort is doing real damage to public faith in the integrity of U.S. elections.

2 shot in Avalon; SWAT situation concludes | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Allegheny County police are investigating a shooting Thursday in Avalon that injured two men, one of them critically.

On Thursday, Avalon police responded to a report of a shooting at about 12:05 p.m. at the 500 block of Girard Avenue, according to a news release. Officers found a 23-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Police said he was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

County police Lt. Venerando Costa said another person, who Lt. Costa said was responsible for the shooting, was also shot and was taken to UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. Police said he is 17 years old and had an apparent grazing wound to his head; he was treated and released, police said.

Lt. Costa said a SWAT team was called to search a house in the nearby 600 block of California Avenue for a possible third person. The SWAT situation concluded at about 3:30 p.m., and Lt. Costa said early Thursday evening that there is not a third person involved in the incident.

Allegheny County homicide detectives were called to assist Avalon officers and learned both individuals were in a dispute over a handgun when the shooting occurred. Police said they have recovered the gun and that the investigation is ongoing.

Police said the county District Attorney’s Office will be consulted to determine if criminal charges will be filed against either the 23-year-old man or the 17-year-old.

Anyone with more information is asked to call the Allegheny County Police Tip line at 833-ALL-TIPS (833-255-8477). Callers can remain anonymous.

Ageing in humans reversed by hyperbaric oxygen therapy: Israel study

Ageing, which happens over time in humans, has been biologically reversed by hyperbaric oxygen therapy, according to new research published in the journal Aging.

Scientists, led by Yafit Hachmo, from the Research and Development Unit, Shamir Medical Center, Tzrifin, Israel, turned back the human clock for 35 adults aged 64 and older by reversing two key areas of the body thought responsible for the frailty and ill-health that comes with growing older. Protective caps at the ends of chromosomes, known as telomeres, shorten, causing DNA to become damaged and cells to stop replicating as people age. At the same time, senescent cells build up in the body, preventing regeneration.

Increasing telomere length and getting rid of senescent cells is the focus of anti-ageing research, with drugs being developed to target those areas, The Telegraph reported.

Holiday travel: CDC recommends Americans don’t travel for Thanksgiving

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is recommending against travel for Thanksgiving.

During a press briefing Thursday, Dr. Henry Walke, the CDC’s COVID-19 incident manager, said the agency is “recommending against travel during the Thanksgiving period.”

“The tragedy that could happen is that one of your family members is coming to this family gathering and they could end up severely ill, hospitalized or dying. And we don’t want that to happen,” he said, as COVID-19 cases tick up across the country. “These times are tough, it’s been a long outbreak, almost 11 months, and we understand people are tired.”

He continued: “We understand that people want to see their family and relatives and do it as they’ve always done it. But this year we’re asking them to limit their travel.”

Almost 7 pounds of suspected cocaine seized during Pa. Turnpike traffic stop in Hempfield | TribLIVE.com

Detroit man is being held in the Westmoreland County Prison after state police said they found almost seven pounds of suspected cocaine hidden in his car, according to court papers.

Kenneth Johnson, 36, is charged with two drug offenses.

A trooper was patrolling the Pennsylvania Turnpike Monday afternoon in Hempfield when a Toyota Camry changed lanes and failed to use a turn signal near mile marker 75, according to court papers. The car had two different Michigan registration plates, police said.

During a traffic stop, a warning was issued and the driver, identified as Johnson, permitted police to search the car. Troopers found a “large void” underneath the rear seat and the drugs were inside, according to court papers.

Johnson is being held in lieu of $75,000 bond. He did not have an attorney listed in online court records. A preliminary hearing is set for Nov. 24.

Cocaine availability increased from 2017 to 2018 in the Philadelphia Field Division area, which includes Southwestern Pennsylvania, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration’s 2019 National Drug Threat Assessment. Cocaine played a role in about 25% of drug overdose deaths in Westmoreland County in 2019, according to coroner statistics.

It’s the second time in less than a month that a large amount of drugs was found in a hidden compartment of a vehicle traveling on the Pennsylvania Turnpike through Westmoreland County. Two New York men were indicted after state police reported finding more than four pounds of fentanyl in their vehicle on Oct. 20 during a traffic stop in Mt. Pleasant Township. The pair told investigators they were headed to Pittsburgh.

Georgia election audit finds 3,039 more uncounted ballots in 2 counties

More than 3,000 uncounted ballots turned up in Georgia as the state is conducting an audit of the 2020 presidential election.

As the hand-tallying continues, officials in Fayette County unearthed 2,755 ballots that had not been included in the original count.

GEORGIA INVESTIGATING VOTE COUNTING DELAYED BY FLOODING IN DEMOCRATIC COUNTY

“There was an issue where we noticed there were more people on the absentee ballot filed for voting in person in Fayette County than was in the actual reporting,” Georgia election official Gabriel Sterling said, according to Fox 5 Atlanta. “It was discovered today for certain. Because of the audit, we found this.”

Sterling said the problem was the result of several individuals not following the proper procedures.

An additional 284 ballots were found in Walton County. The local Board of Elections chair, Lori Wood, told the Walton Tribune the problem was due to votes being previously uploaded from only one of the two ballot scanners in a precinct.

“We would have discovered it,” Wood said. “Maybe not this week, but we would have discovered it.”

The Walton County ballots boosted President Trump’s lead in the heavily Republican county by 176 votes.

GEORGIA RECOUNT UNEARTHS MORE THAN 2,600 UNCOUNTED BALLOTS IN FLOYD COUNTY: REPORT

The recent findings follow the discovery of more than 2,600 ballots in Floyd County that had not been counted. At the time, Floyd County Republican Party chair Luke Martin called the mishap “concerning” but insisted that it “doesn’t appear to be a widespread issue.”

New Research Shows Dinosaurs Would Have Flourished Were It Not For Asteroid | Complex

Dinosaurs would have kept right on living, had an asteroid not wiped them out. That’s according to new research from the University of Bath and London’s Natural History Museum.

While it’s recently been en vogue to claim that dinosaurs were seeing their time of planet-wide domination come to an end even before a massive impact hurried them off the Earth, this new study claims that dinosaurs would have lived on.

The theory this study refutes claims that dinosaur species diversity was dwindling, a sign that the entire branch of the animal kingdom was winding down while avians and mammals were on the rise.

“What we found is that the dinosaurs were still dominant, they were still widespread and still doing really well,” explained lead author Joe Bonsor. “If the asteroid impact had never happened then they might not have died out and they would have continued after the Cretaceous.’

Bonsor and his fellow researchers believe that the prior theory is based on gaps in the fossil record and not hard evidence. Dinosaurs were an incredibly diverse group of animals that lived for hundreds of millions of years. While many of them died in that time, most of their remains were not fossilized. Bonsor thinks that the theory of diversity decline is based on lack of fossils and not proof.

Lead author of the study, Joe Bonsor, is undertaking his PhD jointly at the Milner Centre for Evolution at the University of Bath and the Natural History Museum.

He said: “Previous studies done by others have used various methods to draw the conclusion that dinosaurs would have died out anyway, as they were in decline towards the end of the Cretaceous period.

“However, we show that if you expand the dataset to include more recent dinosaur family trees and a broader set of dinosaur types, the results don’t actually all point to this conclusion – in fact only about half of them do.”

Three Republican members of Michigan’s House of Representatives introduced a resolution for impeachment against Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer Wednesday, following the state’s plan to enforce new coronavirus-related restrictions.

“Today I introduced Articles of Impeachment against Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer,” Rep. Beau LaFave said on twitter Wednesday.

“The four articles of impeachment against Gov. Whitmer include failing to respect the separation of powers by exercising power granted to the legislative branch, violating the constitutional rights of the people of Michigan, issuing executive orders against the interests of the people and state, and using state resources to reward political allies,” he added.

N.Y. Gov. Cuomo to receive $25K pay raise amid pandemic budget deficit | One America News Network

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D-N.Y.) will soon become the highest-paid governor in the nation as a pay raise is set to take effect come January.

The Democrat governor’s pay is going up by $25,000, bumping his salary from $225,000 to $250,000 all during a financial crisis in the state due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Just one month ago, Cuomo outlined the dire situation New York was seeing itself in due to reduced revenue amid numerous shutdowns in the state.

“New York state is already $50 billion in debt between state and local governments and they have not passed legislation on the state and local relief,” Gov. Cuomo stated. “If the state has a deficit and the local governments have a deficit, we can’t fund essential workers.”

The raise came via a joint resolution approved by the New York State Senate and assembly in the spring of 2019.
