Volcano erupts on Hawaii’s Big Island, draws crowds to park | Fox News

HONOLULU (AP) — Kilauea volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island roared back to life Sunday night as lava went shooting into the air, boiling away a water lake and sending a massive plume of steam, gas and ash soaring into the atmosphere.

In the first hours of the eruption, lava mixed rapidly with water in the summit’s crater lake to create steam. The sky above the eruption turned shades of orange and red as people lined up to watch the billowing column of gas and vapor rise above the volcano in the middle of the night.

More than 70 West Point cadets accused of cheating on exam – 6abc Philadelphia

WEST POINT, New York — More than 70 cadets training at the U.S. Military Academy to be Army officers have been accused of cheating on a math exam taken online when they were studying remotely because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Lt. Col. Christopher Ophardt, spokesman for the academy at West Point, said Monday that 73 cadets were accused of cheating on the calculus exam in May after instructors noticed irregularities in answers. All but one were freshmen, or plebes, in a class of 1,200. The other was a sophomore.

“West Point honor code and character development program remains strong despite remote learning and the challenges brought by the pandemic,” Ophardt said. “Cadets are being held accountable for breaking the code.”

After an investigation by an honors committee made up of trained cadets, two cases were dropped for lack of evidence and four were dropped because the cadets resigned, Ophardt said. Of the remaining 67 cases, 55 cadets have admitted cheating and have been enrolled in a six-month rehabilitation program focused on ethics. They will be on probation for the rest of their time at the academy. Three more cadets admitted cheating but weren’t eligible for the rehabilitation program.

Covid-19: Dover port halts traffic to France for 48 hours – BBC News

The port of Dover has been closed to all vehicle traffic leaving the UK for the next 48 hours.

France acted to halt lorry movements in the wake of fresh concerns over the spread of a new strain of coronavirus.

UK ministers and officials will discuss the move at the government’s Cobra emergency committee on Monday.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps urged the public and hauliers not to travel to ports in Kent, saying “significant disruption” was likely in the area.

Kent Police has put Operation Stack into force on the M20 towards Dover to queue lorries caught up in the disruption.

The force said it had implemented the closure of the coast-bound carriageway of the motorway between Junctions 8 and 11 as a “contingency measure”.Dover

The Department for Transport has said that Manston Airport in Kent is being readied to take up to 4,000 lorries to ease congestion in the county.

The Port of Dover is closed to traffic leaving the UK “until further notice” due to border restrictions in France, port authorities said in a statement.”

Both accompanied freight and passenger customers are asked not to travel to the port,” it said. “We understand that the restrictions will be in place for 48 hours from midnight.”

Freight coming to Britain from France will be allowed, but there are fears lorry drivers will not travel to avoid being stuck in the UK.

Shooting at California mall terrifies Christmas shoppers who had to shelter in place – CBS News

A shooting at the Great Mall near San Jose, California, left thousands of people emotionally distressed, sheltering-in-place and calling home to tell families they loved them, authorities said Sunday, according to CBS San Francisco.

Officers responded around 5:16 p.m. local time on Saturday to numerous reports of shots fired inside the Great Mall located in the city of Milpitas. When they arrived, they found a 22-year-old San Francisco man suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and was later hospitalized.

Several law enforcement agencies responded to the Great Mall to assist. The stores were asked to shelter in place while the interior of the mall was evacuated and searched by SWAT teams for suspects and any additional victims.

Will Eating Charred Oranges Restore Sense of Smell After COVID-19?

“Anosmia” refers to the complete loss of the sense of smell.

The claim was featured in a video shared on TikTok on Dec. 15, 2020, in which two women describe the “TikTok trick” as a “Christmas miracle.” The two roommates claimed they had COVID-19 at the time of filming and both lost their sense of smell. In the clip, the duo is seen blackening an unpeeled orange on the stovetop, peeling it, mushing it in a cup, adding brown sugar, and eating it.

At the time of writing, the video had nearly 800,000 views. But despite its popularity, there is no evidence to suggest that eating any style of orange will restore a person’s loss of smell or taste due to COVID-19. In fact, science is only just beginning to understand the mechanisms behind why people lose their sense of smell from SARS-CoV-2 in the first place, much less how to restore it.

How Does the Nose Smell?

Highly specialized sensory cells known as olfactory sensory neurons make up a small patch of tissues inside of the human nose, according to the National Institutes of Health. Each olfactory neuron has one odor receptor in the brain. As substances around the nose release microscopic molecules, the neurons stimulate receptors in the brain and send messages to identify the smell.

To reach the olfactory sensory neurons, smells take one of two paths: either through the nostrils or via a channel that connects the roof of the throat to the nose. This is why scent plays such a large role in our sense of taste — chewing food releases molecules that the olfactory sensory neurons in the back of the throat can pick up on. But when this channel is blocked by an infection, the scent of food can be lost on the brain, a condition known as anosmia.

Why Does COVID-19 Infection Create a Loss of Smell?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) listed a “new loss of taste or smell” as a symptom of COVID-19 and it is thought that COVID-19 infection creates an inflammation reaction inside the nose that leads to the loss of the olfactory neurons. And anosmia has been shown to be an indicator of viral spread at the community level, making it an important characteristic to track when tracing COVID-19 infection.

Second stimulus checks: Breakthrough clears way for deal with $600 payments

XSTAR/AP) – “We’re getting very close, very close,” Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said as he left the Capitol late Saturday.

Top congressional lawmakers struck a late-night agreement on the last major obstacle to a COVID-19 economic relief package costing nearly $1 trillion, clearing the way for votes as early as Sunday.

The breakthrough involved a fight over Federal Reserve emergency powers and was resolved by the Senate’s top Democrat and a senior conservative Republican.

Congressional aides confirmed the agreement late Saturday, which clears the way for an expected deal Sunday on the aid bill. The measure is finally nearing passage amid a frightening spike in cases and deaths and accumulating evidence that the economy is struggling through the pandemic.

Schumer spent much of the day going back and forth with GOP Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania. Toomey had been pressing a provision to close down Fed lending facilities. Democrats and the White House said it was too broadly worded and would have tied the hands of the incoming Biden administration.

The compromise, aides said, preserved Toomey’s goal but retained the Fed’s existing powers to restart similar facilities in the future.

The COVID-19 legislation has been held up after months of dysfunction, posturing and bad faith. But talks turned serious last week as lawmakers on both sides finally faced the deadline of acting before leaving Washington for Christmas.

The relief bill, lawmakers and aides say, would establish a temporary $300 per week supplemental jobless benefits and $600 direct stimulus payments to most Americans. It would provide a fresh round of subsidies for hard-hit businesses and money for schools, health care providers and renters facing eviction.

AOC v. Pelosi: Round 12? | TheHill

A girl fight is hard to resist. And though this one is more pantsuits than bikinis, political observers are drooling at the prospect of another round of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) versus House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

Though this “feud” has been a thing only for a couple of years — the duration of AOC’s political career thus far — it has all the makings of a blockbuster story that leads to great soundbites and, most critically, lots of clicks online.

The latest installment centers on comments that AOC made on the podcast Intercepted with Jeremy Scahill, wherein the young congresswoman offered: “We need new leadership in the Democratic Party.” She added, “Opportunities to lead are so few and far between,” because there is a “lack of real grooming of a next generation of leadership.”

True to form, about five seconds after some recent college grad working at The Intercept hits “upload” on the podcast, Beltway media combusted. But the dirty little secret behind this story, and so many others like it, is that it really isn’t a story at all.

It isn’t a novel idea that Democrats need new leadership, or that one of the most vocal progressive representatives shares that belief. As AOC wrote on Twitter, “Yep, journalists have asked me (and others!) this same question for two years and I’ve answered the same way almost every time but for some reason today it’s “news.” (It’s not news) I am however guilty of the cardinal political sin of clearly answering a journalists’ question.”

Two things are important here. First, she rightly highlights how infrequently politicians directly answer journalists’ questions. I know the business of politics is messy and that some dodging is just part of the game. But the frequency at which pols spin, obfuscate and outright ignore media questions has done real damage to Americans’ ability to get a real handle on where those tax dollars they send to Washington are going.

Second, AOC isn’t alone in feeling this way about the Democratic leadership. Far from it. Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) unsuccessfully challenged Pelosi in 2016 and, after the Democrats won the House in 2018, said, “I think it’s important that we listen to those new members. They got elected in red districts, conservative districts. They did a heck of a job over the last year. I think their opinions should matter.”

All House members’ opinions should matter, and especially so when they’ve just won a conservative or purple district. In 2018, more than 20 congressional candidates pledged not to support Pelosi for the speakership should they win, with nearly 10 of them winning their races and Rep. Marcia Fudge (D-Ohio) very seriously weighed a challenge. Pelosi was able to hold on to her position by pledging to serve only four more years in the role, but criticism persisted.

Trump files long shot Supreme Court challenge over Biden win in Pa

Trump’s reelection campaign made a long shot bid at the Supreme Court on Sunday to challenge President-elect Joe Biden’s victory in Pennsylvania.

  • President Donald Trump’s reelection campaign made a long shot bid at the Supreme Court on Sunday to challenge President-elect Joe Biden’s victory in Pennsylvania in a petition that asked the justices to reverse the outcome of the race.
  • The case, filed nearly seven weeks after Election Day and just a month before Biden is set to be inaugurated, will almost certainly be turned aside by the justices.
  • It comes as Trump continues to deny his loss even as judges around the country have resoundingly rejected his and his allies’ baseless allegations of fraud.

Drive-Ins Spread Through Hollywood (And Beyond)

As the prospects for going back to see movies indoors anytime soon grows dimmer, pop-up drive-ins are spreading. Now you can enjoy a socially distanced movie with dozens of other cars from Santa Monica to Montclair, along with more points in between.

In the heart of Hollywood, you’re even getting new(ish) movies. The much-hyped Tenet started playing nightly on Saturday at the Hollywood Legion Drive-In, a drive-in set up outside an American Legion hall just south of the Hollywood Bowl, ahead of the movie’s home release. The screen might not be the IMAX that director Christopher Nolan had envisioned, but it’s keeping the theatrical experience alive while we can’t be together in a movie theater.

The movie is the biggest Warner Bros. release since the pandemic began and one of its last releases before announcing that Wonder Woman 1984 would kick off plans to put all of its new movies on streaming site HBO Max through 2021. And the Legion Drive-In will be screening Wonder Woman 1984 on Christmas Day too — tickets go on sale Thursday at 9 a.m., making it one of the few places in the city to see the movie in-person.

Hollywood’s American Legion Post 43 had recently renovated to add a $5 million theater with almost 500 seats, with the ability to screen both 35 millimeter and 70 millimeter film. But COVID-19 has meant a theater left empty most of this year.

“I actually went to Bill Steele, the theater director, and told him that I really thought that we should consider converting our parking lot back here into a drive-in theater,” the Legion’s chief projectionist Taylor Umphenour told LAist. He also works as a projectionist for the Motion Picture Academy and several of the major studios.

Second COVID-19 vaccine authorized in US preparing to ship out | fox61.com

Workers on Sunday began packaging shipments of the second COVID-19 vaccine authorized in the U.S., a desperately needed boost to efforts to bring the coronavirus pandemic under control.

Employees at a factory in the Memphis area were boxing up the vaccine developed by Moderna Inc. and the National Institutes of Health. The much-needed shots are expected to be given starting Monday, just three days after the Food and Drug Administration authorized their emergency rollout.

Later Sunday, an expert committee will debate who should be next in line for early doses of the Moderna vaccine and a similar one from Pfizer Inc. and Germany’s BioNTech. Pfizer’s shots were first shipped out a week ago and started being used  the next day, kicking off the nation’s biggest vaccination drive.

Public health experts say the shots — and others in the pipeline — are the only way to stop a virus that has been spreading wildly. Nationwide, more than 219,000 people per day on average test positive for the virus, which has killed more than 314,000 in the U.S. and nearly 1.7 million worldwide. The Pfizer and Moderna shots shipped so far and going out over the next few weeks are nearly all going to health care workers and residents of long-term care homes, based on the advice of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices.

That panel meets Sunday to debate who should get the doses available after those early shots are given. There won’t be enough shots for the general population until spring, so doses will be rationed at least for the next several months.

That’s launch number 26 for SpaceX, its most ever in a year.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — SpaceX launched a clandestine U.S. spy  satellite into space for the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO)  Saturday (Dec. 19) , marking its 26th rocket of the year.

The mysterious payload, called NROL-108, lifted off from Pad 39A here at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center at  9 a.m. (1400 GMT) , during a planned three hour launch window.

A used two-stage Falcon 9 rocket carried the spy satellite aloft, as part of a government mission called NROL-108, marking SpaceX’s 26th launch of 2020, a new record for the company. Approximately nine minutes after liftoff, the booster’s first stage produced some dramatic sonic booms as it made its way back to terra firma, touching down at SpaceX’s Landing Zone-1 (LZ-1) at the nearby Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.

Additional few inches of snow recorded in Pittsburgh region | TribLIVE.com

Western Pennsylvania woke up to a little extra snow Sunday morning, adding to the already large piles dumped across the state earlier this week.

Accumulations reached between 1 and 3 inches across the region, according to Lee Hendricks, meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Moon, with Allegheny County totaling between 1 and 1.5 inches. Hendricks was not able to provide totals for Westmoreland, but predictions showed the county receiving under an inch of snow.

Across the region, Dayton Borough in Armstrong County saw the largest amount of snow, with totals hovering around 3.5 inches. Clarion County closely followed, measuring between 2 and 2.5 inches. Fayette and Butler saw between 1 and 2.5 inches Sunday morning, Hendricks said.

“The snow is pretty much done across much of the region, so I have scattered flurries here,” he said.

After legal threat, Fox airs news package debunking election fraud claims made by its own hosts – CNN

New York (CNN)If President Trump tunes into Fox News this weekend, he may see something unexpected: a point-by-point fact-check to wild election fraud claims made by some of his favorite hosts on the network.

After voting technology company Smartmatic sent Fox News a blistering legal threat that accused the network of participating in a “disinformation campaign” against it, the network has started airing a remarkable news package debunking claims its hosts and guests have propagated.
The package aired for the first time Friday night on Lou Dobbs’ show. Fox News said the same package would air Saturday night on Jeanine Pirro’s program as well as Sunday morning on Maria Bartiromo’s show. All three hosts, who use their platforms to air pro-Trump propaganda, are close with the President.
The stunning news package featured an interview with voting technology expert Eddie Perez, who poured cold water on a series of conspiracy theories that have been amplified and promoted on the shows of Dobbs, Pirro, and Bartiromo.

Perez said, for instance, that he had not seen any evidence that Smartmatic software was used to manipulate the election or that there was a direct connection between the company and liberal philanthropic billionaire George Soros. As Trump has continued to attack the integrity of the voting system, some of his allies have homed in on Smartmatic because of the services it provided Los Angeles County for the 2020 election. The baseless conspiracy theories peddled about Smartmatic, which mimic those pushed against Dominion Voting Systems, falsely suggest that the company’s technology allowed the November vote to be rigged against Trump. Some strains of the conspiracy theory have aimed to tie the company to Soros and the late Venezuelan leader Hugo Chávez. When asked for comment on the surreal news package Fox aired, Erik Connolly, an attorney for Smartmatic, told CNN, “We cannot comment due to potential litigation.” A Fox News spokesperson referred CNN back to the segment itself and did not comment further. In its legal notice to Fox News, dated December 10, Smartmatic identified several instances in which conspiracy theories were spread on its air by either Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani or former Trump campaign lawyer Sidney Powell. The legal notice, which stated assertions made about Chavez and Soros have no truth to them, also identified instances in which Dobbs and Bartiromo helped spread false information.

Deal Nears On COVID Relief After Senators Clear Major Hurdle

Congressional lawmakers say they’ve cleared a major obstacle in their path to passing a $900 billion COVID relief package, with votes expected as soon as Sunday.

The latest standoff holding up a package both parties say is crucial for the American people centered on a GOP-backed provision led by Pennsylvania Sen. Pat Toomey that would curb the ability of the Federal Reserve to provide certain emergency loans.

Democrats had pushed back on Toomey, arguing that his provision would also prevent future treasury secretaries from restarting the lending programs.

But legislators say they reached a compromise on the issue late Saturday.

According to a senior Democratic aide, “compromise language” was being finalized late Saturday evening after hours of talks between Toomey and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.

The aide added: “A final agreement on an emergency relief package is significantly closer.”

Toomey’s office said in a statement Sunday morning that the “tentative agreement is an unqualified victory for taxpayers,” adding that the deal “will preserve Fed independence and prevent Democrats from hijacking these programs for political and social policy purposes.”

New strain of Covid-19: Boris Johnson backtracks on relaxing Christmas rules – CNN

London (CNN)The hopes of millions of Britons that Covid-19 restrictions would be eased over Christmas were dashed on Saturday, after scientists warned a new strain of the virus is spreading more quickly than others.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a series of stricter coronavirus restrictions, tightening rules around household mixing that were due to be relaxed over Christmas in England, while leaders in Scotland and Wales also introduced more stringent measures. The UK has among the highest Covid death rates in Europe, with more than 67,000 fatalities, and over 2 million cases.
The PM broke the news that London, and large parts of southern and eastern England, where cases are surging, will enter Tier 4 restrictions, similar to a lockdown, on Sunday.
“The spread is being driven by the new variant of the virus,” Johnson said in a hastily called press conference. “It appears to spread more easily and may be up to 70% more transmissable than the earlier strain.”

Lin Wood, Sidney Powell Call on Trump to Impound Voting Machines

Attorneys L. Lin Wood and Sidney Powell have called on President Donald Trump to impound voting machines used in the 2020 presidential election. Wood is one of the president’s supporters who’s been arguing the election suffered from large scale fraud.

“On behalf of We The People, I urge @realDonaldTrump to exercise his executive power to direct US Marshals to impound voting machines used in 11/3 election,” Wood tweeted on Thursday.

“We The People only ask to receive what we deserve: the knowledge that our cherished right to vote was not stolen from us

.”National Review Says Trump’s Refusal to Concede Is ‘Worst Thing He’s Done

Wood brought a lawsuit against the state of Georgia challenging the election results there and attempting to prevent their certification. The case was dismissed.>He retweeted another Twitter user on Thursday arguing that Trump had the power to order U.S. Marshalls to impound voting machines and that person had in turn retweeted Powell.

“Impound the machines for immediate forensic inspections. If there was no fraud, the #Left should welcome it! People who have nothing to hide, hide nothing,” Powell tweeted on Thursday.

French teens protest after transgender classmate’s suicide

LILLE, France (AP) — About 100 teenagers rallied in northern France on Friday to pay homage to a transgender student who killed herself this week after facing tensions with school officials for wearing a skirt to class, a case that has drawn online indignation and national attention to the issue of gender identity.

The students held a sit-in and a moment of silence outside the entrance to the Fenelon High School in Lille as school started Friday, expressing their anger and distress at the suicide of their classmate Fouad.

Fouad, 17, killed herself Tuesday in a shelter where she had been staying, the school district said in a statement. She was identified only by her first name according to French policy for protecting minors. A psychological support program was put in place for the students

Activist groups say several thousand people in France are transgender, and that they face routine abuse or discrimination despite regulations against it.

Arnaud Alessandrin, a sociologist at the University of Bordeaux who has written books about gender identity, said the French government is behind European neighbors in terms of transgender rights, and he welcomed the public outcry over Fouad’s death as a sign that awareness is growing.

“A few years ago, people didn’t care” about the suicide of a trans youth, he said. “Today, they are indignant. People are starting to say that it’s not normal.”
