Unruly passenger on diverted Delta Air Lines flight identified as off-duty flight attendant

“This is the captain speaking,” a voice can be heard saying in footage of the incident. “We’d like all strong males to the front of the aircraft to handle a problem passenger.”

Delta Air Lines on Saturday identified an unruly passenger on a Friday night flight from Los Angeles to Atlanta as an off-duty flight attendant.

Cellphone video shows passengers on top of the person and reveals a voice on the plane’s public-address system: “This is the captain speaking. We’d like all strong males to the front of the aircraft to handle a problem passenger.”

The flight was diverted to Oklahoma City, and the FBI took the person into custody based on unknown allegations. The passenger’s name was not released.

FBI spokeswoman Megan Lauro would only say the FBI was investigating the incident.

Austin shooting: At least 13 people injured in a shooting downtown, authorities say – CNN

(CNN)At least 13 people were injured early Saturday morning in a shooting in downtown Austin, Texas, officials said.

Two of the people injured are in critical condition, Austin Interim Chief of Police Joseph Chacon said at a news briefing Saturday.
Six people were taken to a hospital by the Austin Police Department, and the Austin-Travis County EMS brought in four others for medical treatment, Chacon said. Three other victims brought themselves to the hospital.
One hospital received 11 of the victims for treatment while another person was transported to a different hospital. One person went to an urgent care facility with multiple gunshot wounds, Chacon said.
Police have a very general description of the suspect and the incident appears to be isolated to the area, but could not say for certain that there was no additional public danger because the suspect is not in custody, Chacon said.
Police are currently reviewing camera footage from multiple sources, including the Public Safety Camera System, police body cameras and business surveillance video to determine what happened.
Detectives from the Aggravated Assault, Homicide, Organized Crime and Gang units are involved in the investigation, police said. Investigators have not ruled out gang involvement, but say the motive and circumstances that led to the shooting are not clear at this time.
The FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force Team is also on scene, Chacon said.
Shortly after the shooting, the Austin Police Department had urged in a post on Twitter for people to stay away from the 6th Street downtown area.

After a Year of Protests, Portland Is Ready to Move On. But Where? – The New York Times

PORTLAND, Ore. — Defund the police? City leaders in Portland tried it. A unit in the fire and rescue bureau, one of the first of its kind in a major city, began this year taking some 911 calls about people in crisis, especially those who are homeless.

Instead of police officers with flashing lights and guns, a paramedic and a social worker would drive up offering water, a high-protein snack and, always and especially, conversation, aiming to defuse a situation that could otherwise lead to confrontation and violence. No power to arrest. No coercion.

“Having someone show up and offer you goods rather than run you off is different, and people respond to it — it softens the mood,” said Tremaine Clayton, a burly, tattooed veteran of 20 years at the fire and rescue bureau who helps run the program.

But this spring, just as the project was preparing for a major rollout into more neighborhoods, there was another plot twist: The new policing alternative was itself mostly defunded. The city decided on a go-slow approach, and the promised $4.8 million expansion evaporated.

Violent crime, especially homicide, has spiked in most urban areas during the pandemic, and many police departments are facing new scrutiny about training and bias since the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis a year ago.

Delta flight diverted after unruly passenger tries to breach cockpit

A Delta Airlines flight to Tennessee was forced to land in New Mexico on Friday after an unhinged passenger reportedly tried to break into the cockpit.

The plane from Los Angeles was diverted to Albuquerque, where it landed at around 2:20 p.m., according to local station KOAT-TV.

The suspect was taken in to custody and the aircraft then continued on to Nashville, according to the report. No one was injured.

“The passenger was not successful. The plane landed safely and the passenger was removed by police and the FBI. He is in custody now,” Delta said in a statement to the station.

A woman named Jessica Robertson tweeted more than two minutes worth of footage of the hogtied suspect being restrained at the front of the plane.

The man can be heard crying out “you gotta stop this plane” at least 25 times in a row and with increasing urgency — as three men near the cockpit hold him down on the floor.

Judge rules California’s decades-old assault weapon ban violates Second Amendment | Fox News

federal judge in San Diego on Friday overturned California’s three-decade ban on assault weapons, saying it violates the Second Amendment.

“Under no level of heightened scrutiny can the law survive,” U.S. District Judge Roger Benitez said before issuing a permanent injunction that takes effect in 30 days. Benitez argued the state’s definition of illegal military-style rifles bans firearms allowed in other states, depriving California gun owners of their rights. He compared the AR-15 rifle to a Swiss Army knife, saying it’s “a perfect combination of home defense weapon and homeland defense equipment. Good for both home and battle.”

‘Enough’: Biden calls for action on guns in wake of San Jose shooting – CNNPolitics

(CNN)President Joe Biden on Wednesday urged Congress to “take immediate action” on gun legislation in the wake of a shooting in San Jose, California, that killed eight people earlier in the day, noting that he was ordering the flag lowered to half-staff just weeks after other mass shootings around the country.

“Enough,” Biden said in a statement. “Once again, I urge Congress to take immediate action and heed the call of the American people, including the vast majority of gun owners, to help end this epidemic of gun violence in America.”
A gunman killed eight people when he opened fire at public transit rail yard. The investigation is ongoing and officials have not released a possible motive. The shooter, an employee of the Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), is also dead.
Biden described the shooting as a “horrific tragedy” and said he and Vice President Kamala Harris, who also called on Congress to act, had been briefed on the situation.
“We are still awaiting many of the details of this latest mass shooting, but there are some things we know for sure. There are at least eight families who will never be whole again. There are children, parents, and spouses who are waiting to hear whether someone they love is ever going to come home. There are union brothers and sisters — good, honest, hardworking people — who are mourning their own,” Biden said.
The President added: “Every life that is taken by a bullet pierces the soul of our nation. We can, and we must, do more.”
Biden’s ordering of the flag to be lowered follows recent mass shootings in and around Atlanta, Indianapolis, Boulder, Colorado, and Rock Hill, South Carolina.

San Jose shooting leaves 8 dead, deceased suspect identified; White House monitoring rail yard incident | Fox News

A shooting at a rail yard in San Jose, California, early Wednesday left eight people dead, not including the suspect, who was also declared deceased after taking his own life, authorities confirmed.

The suspect was identified as Samuel Cassidy, who was an employee at the Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), where the incident took place, according to authorities. No motive is known for the shooting at this time.

Santa Clara County Sheriff’s spokesman Deputy Russell Davis said several explosive devices were found inside a building at the VTA control center. A bomb squad is at the scene and there is no present danger to the community, he said.

An investigation is also underway of an arson fire at what is believed to be the nearby home of the suspect. FBI agents and the San Jose Fire Department were at the second scene. Authorities say the house caught fire before the shooting at the VTA.

In Washington, D.C., principal deputy press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said the White House will continue to stay in close contact with local officials in San Jose, before using the shooting as an opportunity to call for Congress to strengthen background checks.”

The White House is monitoring the situation, and our hearts go out to the victims and their families,” Jean-Pierre said. “We still don’t have all the details, but what is clear, as the president has said, is that we are suffering from an epidemic of gun violence in this country, both in mass shootings and in the lives that are being taken in daily gun violence that doesn’t make national headlines.”

Shoplifting in San Francisco is so out of control that retailers are closing stores | The Independent

Among the many problems plaguing San Francisco in recent years, business leaders say one has become so commonplace that residents barely notice it: shoplifting.

Walgreens says petty theft in the city has gotten so out of control that it’s had to close 17 of its stores. CVS has told its employees not to intervene because the thieves so often attack them, calling San Francisco “one of the epicenters of organized retail crime.”

“We’ve had incidents where our security officers are assaulted on a pretty regular basis in San Francisco,” Brendan Dugan, head of CVS’ retail crime division, said at a 13 May hearing with city officials, according to a New York Times report.

Police agree that the stealing has become endemic.“

The one trend we are seeing is more violence and escalating – and much more bold,” Commander Raj Vaswani of the San Francisco Police Department said at the hearing. “We see a lot of repeat offenders.”

A 22-year-old Pittsburgh man was killed early Saturday morning when he was hit by gunshots fired at the vehicle in which he was riding in the southbound lanes of Route 28 near the Sharpsburg exit, state police at Kittanning said.

Shane Edwards, died at 2:40 a.m. at a Pittsburgh hospital, the Allegheny County Medical Examiner said. The cause of death was not available.

No one has been arrested in connection with Edwards’ shooting and Sharpsburg Police Chief Thomas Stelitano that another person in the vehicle would not cooperate with police who were investigating it as a homicide.

Stelitano said he understands that the shooting was the result of a dispute that started at Zone 28, an entertainment center at Harmarville. The shooting could have occurred anywhere between Harmarville and where the vehicle stopped on Route 28, Stelitano said.

State police said they believe the shooting about 2 a.m. was an isolated incident.

Although state police said the shooting occurred in Sharpsburg and Stelitano and Etna police said the shooting did not occur within their jurisdiction and their officers were not involved in the investigation.

Israeli forces clash with Palestinians outside Al Aqsa mosque after Gaza ceasefire – CNN

Jerusalem (CNN)Israeli security forces used stun grenades and rubber bullets against Palestinians outside the Al Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem, where thousands of worshipers had been attending Friday prayers, puncturing a half-day of calm brought on by a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

A CNN journalist at the mosque compound said dozens of Israeli officers hit journalists with batons and tried to point rifles at them, calling them “liars” when they showed them their press cards.
The officers moved on to the compound as thousands of worshipers chanted in solidarity with Gaza and with Palestinian residents of the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah, where some Palestinian families are facing eviction.

Israeli media: Cabinet approves cease-fire in Gaza

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office on Thursday announced a cease-fire to halt an 11-day military operation against Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip.

A statement said his Security Cabinet unilaterally approved the Egyptian-mediated proposal. The two sides were still negotiating exactly when it would take effect. Multiple reports said the truce was to go into effect at 2 a.m., just over three hours after the cabinet’s decision.

“The political leaders emphasized that the reality on the ground will be that which determines the future of the campaign,” the statement said.

The decision came after heavy U.S. pressure to halt the offensive. There was no immediate comment from Hamas.

Since fighting broke out on May 10, Israel has launched hundreds of airstrikes that it says have targeted Hamas’ infrastructure, including a vast tunnel network. Hamas and other militant groups embedded in residential areas have fired over 4,000 rockets at Israeli cities, with hundreds falling short and most of the rest intercepted.

At least 230 Palestinians have been killed, according to Gaza health officials, while 12 people in Israel have died

“Unruly” passenger faces $52,500 fine as FAA announces new penalties – CBS News

An airline passenger who tried to open the cockpit door and hit a flight attendant in the face twice is facing the year’s largest fine from the Federal Aviation Administration: $52,500. The passenger on a December 23 Delta airlines flight from Honolulu to Seattle is one of four “unruly passengers” the agency announced Monday it is seeking fines against under its zero-tolerance policy.

The FAA says the passenger facing the largest fine also refused to comply with crew members’ instructions, threatened the flight attendant and slipped out of plastic cuffs during the flight, which was met by police when it landed. While it’s unclear if this is the highest fine ever sought by the agency, it is the most announced this year. The largest fine the agency can seek is $35,000, but multiple offenses can result in a higher penalty, officials told CBS News.

The agency also announced it is seeking fines against three other passengers, who have 30 days to respond to the agency. One woman is facing a $9,000 fine for continually refusing to wear a mask properly and cursing at flight attendants on a February 15 Allegiant Air flight from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, to Knoxville, Tennessee.

Providence shooting: Nine people injured in shooting that Rhode Island police chief says was between feuding groups – CNN

(CNN)Nine people in Rhode Island’s capital were injured in a shooting Thursday, Providence Police Chief Hugh Clement said during a news conference.

Three victims are “very seriously injured, maybe critically,” Clement said.
Only one patient was taken to the Rhode Island Hospital by ambulance while the rest arrived in private vehicles, according to Clement.
Police responded around 6:47 p.m. ET to reports of shots fired at a home, according to Clement.
Clement said the assailant vehicle pulled up outside a home and the occupants began shooting. Those at the home returned fire, according to the chief.
The people involved in the shooting are known to police and are part of two feuding groups, Clement said. The chief added that officers were sent to the hospital for security because of the possibility that victims from opposing groups were there.
Clement said the ages of those involved range from 19 to 25.
Several dozen shots were fired in the incident, he said.
“This was not random. It was targeted at that address,” he told reporters.
No arrests have been made at this point and the investigation is ongoing, the chief said.
Clement said there were at least four or five guns involved in the shooting.

Israel strikes Gaza, Hamas fires rockets after hundreds of Palestinians wounded in clashes – CBS News

Israel’s army on Monday said it launched airstrikes on Gaza in response to rockets fired by Hamas militants after hundreds of Palestinians were hurt in clashes with Israeli police at a religious site in Jerusalem.

Israeli army spokesman Jonathan Conricus told reporters that Israeli forces had targeted “a Hamas military operative,” while Hamas sources in Gaza confirmed to AFP that one of their commanders had been killed.

Confrontations between Israeli security forces and protesters have been escalating for weeks. The clashes started at the beginning of Ramadan, almost a month ago, when Israeli police put up barriers to stop people sitting in the Damascus Gate plaza, a popular gathering area during Ramadan. Young Palestinians protested what they saw as Israeli authorities disrupting their religious and social traditions.

3 killed, 2 hospitalized after argument at Jefferson Gun Outlet leads to shots fired

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting in Metairie at the Jefferson Gun Outlet.

According to Sheriff Joseph Lopinto, three people are dead and two people were taken to area hospitals and are considered to be stable.

At around 2:50 pm, Lopinto said deputies responded to the shooting at the Jefferson Gun Outlet in the 6700 block of Airline Drive.

Deputies found several victims suffering from gunshot wounds, according to Lopinto.

JPSO sources say that a man entered the gun outlet with a loaded gun unholstered.

Sources say that the man got into an argument with a clerk who told him he should not have a loaded gun until he got inside the range.

According to JPSO sources, shots were fired during the argument when at least two customers on the range engaged the man.

The man was shot, but also fired back at the two customers who were also injured, according to JPSO sources.

At this time, Lopinto said it appears a suspect shot two victims inside the location, then was engaged by the two customers and shot outside the location by multiple other individuals.

The suspect is one of the deceased on scene, according to Lopinto.

There is no additional information available at this time.
