U.S. carries out several airstrikes on Taliban in Afghanistan – The Washington Post

KABUL — The United States has launched several airstrikes in support of embattled Afghan forces in recent days, U.S. officials said Friday, an escalation in U.S. involvement in Afghanistan as the Taliban seizes more territory from government forces.

At least four of the strikes were carried out Wednesday and Thursday, including some in Kandahar, which is the birthplace of the Taliban and increasingly under pressure by Taliban forces, said one U.S. official, who, like another U.S. official, spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation.

The airstrikes were conducted at the request of Afghan forces under attack by the Taliban or to destroy equipment stolen by the militants, including artillery and vehicles, according to the two U.S. officials.

An Afghan military official, also speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss the situation, said the escalation of U.S. strikes has been “significant” compared to recent months, concentrated in the northern province of Kunduz and in Kandahar.

“Strategic momentum appears to be sort of with the Taliban,” Milley said.

For weeks, the Afghan military has bitterly fought to maintain control of provincial capitals after losing huge swaths of the country’s rural territory, often with little or no resistance. Militants have besieged the capitals by seizing districts nearby, choking off key roads in a bid to deny Afghan troops freedom of movement.

No provincial capitals have fallen, but Milley said the Taliban’s strategy has forced Afghan security forces to abandon some districts and reconsolidate to defend populated cities.

Neighbors help troopers locate Hempfield break-in suspect | TribLIVE.com

Residents in the rural Hempfield village of Hannastown helped direct state police to a man accused of forcing his way into a home Tuesday and initially refusing to leave before running away moments before officers arrived.

Blake R. Quakenbush, 26, of Latrobe was arrested on charges of burglary, criminal trespass, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness after the incident on Steel Avenue. He was ordered held in the county prison after failing to post $50,000 bond.

Troopers said two adults inside the residence reported Quakenbush barged into the house, “shutting the door behind him and began yelling, screaming and causing a disturbance.”

A female said she picked her two-year-old child from the floor and ran into a nearby room, locking the door during the incident.

The male owner of the home said Quakenbush, a stranger, initially refused to leave after he barged in, Trooper Matthew Cunningham said in court documents.

The pair reported Quakenbush appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance.

Responding troopers “were informed by several neighbors” that they saw Quakenbush running away and Cunningham said the suspect was located a short time later and taken into custody.

Pittsburgh stabbing victim says he was saved by neighbor who opened fire on attacker

The victim of a stabbing in Pittsburgh said he was saved when a neighbor intervened.

That neighbor said he opened fire on the attacker, who then drove off despite having a gunshot wound to the leg.

The incident happened a little before 7:30 a.m. Monday inside an apartment building on the 200 block of West Warrington Avenue, which falls on the line between the city’s Beltzhoover and Mount Washington neighborhoods.

According to a criminal complaint, the victim said he woke up to his friend, Juan Hernandez, 54, punching him in the face and stabbing him with a screwdriver.

The victim said he believes he would have died if a neighbor hadn’t intervened.

That neighbor said they opened fire on Hernandez, who police said ran out to his vehicle and drove away.

Hernandez was pulled over two hours later and taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg.

Police said the driver’s side window of his vehicle appeared to be broken from gunfire.

Hernandez was taken to the hospital for evaluation and later charged with multiple offenses including attempted homicide and aggravated assault.

A motive for the attack has not been determined though one witness did say they knew Hernandez to be friends with the victim.

Police said Hernandez told them multiple stories about the attack including claiming the victim was the one who shot him.

There’s no word on when Hernandez will be arraigned on the charges he’s facing.

Mass Shooting Kills 18-Year-Old Woman Near Downtown Portland Food Carts – Willamette Week

A mass shooting in downtown Portland, shortly before last call on Saturday morning, killed an 18-year-old woman and injured six others near a line of food carts in what police described as “an extremely chaotic scene.”

Portland Police Chief Chuck Lovell said the killing, along with another fatal shooting four hours later in the Parkrose neighborhood, in deep Northeast Portland, marked the city’s 50th and 51st homicides of the year. Portland saw 55 homicides in 2020, a 26-year record but one on pace to be broken by the end of July.

In the past 36 hours, Lovell said, Portland had 11 shooting incidents, killing two people and injuring at least 11.

In a press conference this afternoon, Lovell and Mayor Ted Wheeler described the Police Bureau as unprepared and outmatched by a wave of gunfire across the city.

“What we need is a plan,” Wheeler said. “The plan has to acknowledge that the public safety needs of this city are charging and they are changing rapidly. It’s clear to me that we do not have the adequate resources deployed on our streets in a proactive way.”

Lovell blamed a wave of officers leaving the force—125 in the last year, he said—leaving police incapable of patrolling all the neighborhoods hit by gunfire.

Violent July Fourth results in dozens shot, several killed | Fox News

Americans made up for missed July Fourth celebrations in 2020 by going all out this year – and the holiday weekend also saw a spike in shootings and assaults across the country over last year.

Major cities were already braced for gun violence as shootings had been on the rise over the past few weeks, but nearly 100 people were shot across the country during the holiday weekend.

New York City alone saw 26 people shot from Friday through Sunday, with two of them resulting in deaths.

Five people were shot in the Bronx Saturday at around 9 p.m., and 10 more people were shot Sunday, the New York Daily News reported.

A large brawl between as many as 50 adolescents in Atlanta resulted at least one death. Police sought footage of the fight to find leads on the cause of the fight and the death. A 14-year-old boy died, and police arrested a 17-year-old in possession of two guns, Fox 5 Atlanta reported.

A shooting in Fort Worth, Texas, left eight people wounded shortly after 1:30 a.m. Sunday when someone fired multiple shots near a car wash, with some of the victims returning fire. Police said that the victims were taken to hospitals and are in stable condition. No suspects are in custody.

Two people died and three others were wounded in a shooting in downtown Cincinnati when a suspect opened fire during a fireworks display. The identities of the victims was not made public, and police released no information about the suspect.

Police were not exempt from the violence, either: Two Chicago officers were shot and wounded around 1:45 a.m. Monday. One officer was struck in the foot while the other was struck in the thigh. The officers went to hospital as a precaution, as their injuries were not life-threatening.

Witnesses: Airstrike in Ethiopia’s Tigray kills more than 50

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — An airstrike hit a busy market in Ethiopia’s northern Tigray village of Togoga on Tuesday and killed at least 51 people, according to health workers who said soldiers blocked medical teams from traveling to the scene.

An official with Tigray’s health bureau told The Associated Press that more than 100 other people were wounded, more than 50 seriously, and at least 33 people were still missing. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of concerns about retaliation.

The alleged airstrike comes amid some of the fiercest fighting in the Tigray region since the conflict began in November as Ethiopian forces supported by those from neighboring Eritrea pursue Tigray’s former leaders. A military spokesman and the spokeswoman for Ethiopia’s prime minister, Billene Seyoum, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Fear shakes Mexico border city after violence leaves 18 dead

By The Associated Press

Fear has invaded the Mexican border city of Reynosa after gunmen in vehicles killed 14 people, including taxi drivers, workers and a nursing student, and security forces responded with operations that left four suspects dead.

While this city across the border from McAllen, Texas is used to cartel violence as a key trafficking point, the 14 victims in Saturday’s attacks appeared to be what Tamaulipas Gov. Francisco García Cabeza de Vaca called “innocent citizens” rather than members of one gang killed by a rival.

Local businessman Misael Chavarria Garza said many businesses closed early Saturday after the attacks and people were very scared as helicopters flew overhead. On Sunday, he said “the people were quiet as if nothing had happened, but with a feeling of anger because now crime has happened to innocent people.”

“It’s not fair,” said taxi driver Rene Guevara, adding that among the dead were two of his fellow taxi drivers whom he defended and said were not involved in crime.

The attacks took place in several neighborhoods in eastern Reynosa, according to the Tamaulipas state agency that coordinates security forces, and sparked a deployment of the military, National Guard and state police across the city.

4 dead, 4 wounded in mass shooting on Chicago’s Southside

Four people were killed and at least four more were wounded Tuesday when an argument escalated into gunfire on Chicago’s Southside, police said.

The victims — three women and a man — were at a residence in the Englewood neighborhood when the bullets started flying around 5:45 a.m. CT, Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown said.

All four four were pronounced dead at the scene, a house in the 6200 block of South Morgan Street, Brown said.

Brown released no other details about the four victims or what sparked the latest outbreak of gun violence in the Windy City. He said no arrests have been made and there was no sign of forced entry, but police have found shell casings inside the house and a large-capacity “drum magazine.”

Mayor Lori Lightfoot called the mass shooting “a tragedy that’s ripped apart families and inflicted intense trauma on several individuals.”

“It tells us that we still have much work to do in our mission to end gun violence here in Chicago and in particular, to limit the access of individuals to illegal guns,” Lightfoot said.

Meanwhile, three men and a woman were recuperating in nearby hospitals police said.

4 mass shootings in 6 hours leave 39 wounded, 5 dead across US – ABC News

At least four major U.S. cities were reeling from an onslaught of mass shootings over the weekend that left at least 39 people wounded, five dead and police officials alarmed that the surge in gun violence is a prelude to a bloody summer as the nation emerges from the pandemic.

Police in Austin, Cleveland, Chicago and Savannah were all investigating on Sunday mass shootings that erupted over a six-hour streak that began around 9 p.m. on Friday and spilled over into Saturday morning.

“It’s very disturbing what we’re seeing across the country and the level of gun violence that we’re seeing across the country. It’s disturbing and it’s senseless,” Savannah Police Chief Roy Minter, Jr. said at a weekend news conference after one person was killed and eight others, including an 18-month-old baby and two teenagers, were wounded.

On Sunday morning, Savannah police were working to identify the suspect or suspects who rolled up in a dark-colored sedan and unleashed a barrage of gunfire around 9 p.m. Friday on a group of people standing in front of a home in a residential neighborhood of east Savannah. Minter identified a 20-year-old man killed in the ambush as Arthur Milton of Savannah.

He said two of the adults hit in the shooting were in critical condition. The baby and the two teenagers, ages 15 and 16, suffered non-life-threatening wounds.

Minton said investigators collected 60 shell casings from the shooting scene and added that three houses and several cars were damaged by gunfire.

The chief said the targeted home is the same one someone sprayed with bullets on Tuesday, a shooting that left no one injured.

“We don’t think it was a coincidence,” Minter said.

Roughly four hours after the Savannah shooting, gunfire erupted on a street in Austin’s downtown entertainment district, leaving 14 people wounded, two critically, police said.

One suspect was arrested and a second is being sought, said interim Police Chief Joseph Chacon.
