What we know about the next Senate and the balance of power now that Georgia’s runoff is over

Despite the Georgia runoff results, a split Congress means both Democrats and Republicans will have trouble passing legislation in January.

Warnock winning also puts Democrats in a better position in the next Senate election when the map will favor Republicans, former President Barack Obama said during a campaign stop last week.

Schumer, whose caucus held onto all incumbent seats and picked up Pennsylvania, was gleeful during a Wednesday morning press conference as he cheered the new 51-49 majority. .

“It’s going to be a lot quicker, swifter and easier,” Schumer said, noting that this year marks the first time since 1934 that each Senate incumbent of the party in power won their race.

Researchers Explain Mysterious Structure Found on Beach After Hurricane

The long wood and metal object offers a glimpse at maritime history from the 1800s.

A piece of the past has returned to haunt a Florida beach after a mysterious object made of wood and metal emerged in the aftermath of Hurricane Nicole in November. Initial speculation suggested it might be part of an old pier or perhaps a shipwreck. Now researchers say it’s likely the remains of a cargo ship from the 1800s.

The debris attracted attention when beachgoers spotted it on Daytona Beach Shores. A team from the St. Augustine Lighthouse Archaeological Maritime Program (LAMP) investigated the remnants this week. “It would have likely sailed within sight of the coast and used lighthouses for navigation, though it was probably big enough to cross the Atlantic as well,” said LAMP archaeologist Chuck Meide in a Facebook statement on Tuesday.

US midterms: Georgia Senate run-off looms after bitter campaign

Democrat Raphael Warnock will face Republican Herschel Walker after a long, and at times bitter, campaign.

On Tuesday, Georgia’s seven million registered voters will go to the polls for the fifth time in four years.

That’s thanks to a quirk in the state’s election law that requires winning candidates for state-wide posts in general elections not just to get more votes than everyone else, but to get fifty percent of the votes cast.

Twice in the past four years candidates from both parties have fallen short of that mark. Hence the need for a run-off election in 2021 for both Georgia’s US Senate seats and another one this time around.

Letter to the trib editor: Jail staff’s voices must be heard

When the National Commission on Correctional Health Care did its assessment of suicide prevention at the Allegheny County Jail (ACJ) in August 2019, it found “staffing challenges” of 37 vacancies of medical and mental health staff at the jail. Now there are 69 vacancies of medical and mental health staff at the jail.

Why have so many people left employment at the jail? The large number of lawsuits, deaths and incidents of abuse can be directly related to the staffing crisis.

In December 2020, two years ago, the Jail Oversight Board voted 6-1-1 to conduct exit interviews of ACJ staff who have left employment. It appears the board has only done two exit interviews in two years.

The jail cannot afford to lose more staff. The current staff members need their voices to be heard about why they continue to work at the jail and what could the county, the jail administration and the public could do to innovate policies and practices to increase their retention.

A third party needs to be hired to make their voices heard.

China Places Six Astronauts In Orbit On Its Space Station For First Time

China has successfully sent a new team of astronauts to its Tiangong space station, a significant achievement that not only marks the country’s first in-orbit crew handover but possibly also the beginning of continuous occupancy at the station.

A Long March-2F rocket, carrying the Shenzhou-15 spacecraft with three astronauts to China's Tiangong space station, lifts off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China's Gansu province late Tuesday. | CNS / VIA AFP-JIJI

The rendezvous in space marks a milestone for China’s rapidly advancing space program as Beijing aims to catch up with and eventually surpass the United States as the dominant power in space.

Lava from Mauna Loa is less than 4 miles from a key highway. Officials say they have a plan in case the road closes | CNN

With the Mauna Loa volcano continuing to erupt on Hawaii’s Big Island, local officials and residents are keeping an eye on the lava flow as it creeps closer to a major roadway and making plans for the possibility that access to the highway could soon be cut off and have a major impact on daily life.

The fountains of lava that began pouring from Mauna Loa this week marked the first time it has erupted in 38 years, joining nearby Kilauea, which has been erupting since last year, and creating rare duel volcanic eruptions on the Big Island. At 13,681 feet above sea level, Mauna Loa is the world’s largest active volcano.

NYPD: No known threats to Macy’s parade, but tight security

NEW YORK — New York is planning tight security around the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in the wake of mass shootings elsewhere in the U.S., police said Wednesday, while stressing that there’s no known, credible threat to the famed event itself.

The holiday tradition, which draws throngs of participants and spectators, this year comes two days after six people were killed in a shooting at a Walmart in Virginia, and four days after another shooting killed five people at a gay nightclub in Colorado Springs. Also over the weekend, a man who allegedly threatened to attack a synagogue was arrested at New York’s Penn Station with a knife, a ski mask, a swastika arm patch and an associate, authorities said.

Elon Musk allows Donald Trump back on Twitter

Twitter has become the first mainstream social media platform to reinstate the former president, who was banned from many sites after his supporters breached the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

Musk polled Twitter users on Friday and Saturday asking them whether Trump should be reinstated, and a narrow majority voted for Trump. On Saturday evening, Musk tweeted, “The people have spoken. Trump will be reinstated. Vox Populi, Vox Dei.” The Latin phrase means “the voice of the people is the voice of god.”

Musk had previously said he would not make any “major content decisions or account reinstatements” before convening a “content moderation council with widely diverse viewpoints.”

AOC says Kevin McCarthy ‘intends to reward’ some of the most racist Republicans

Kevin McCarthy has indicated that he would reinstate Marjorie Taylor Greene and Paul Gosar on committees

“I mean beyond unpunished, Kevin McCarthy has made a very clear statement – has stated that he intends to reward some of the most racist members of Congress that we have served in recent years,” she told The Independent.

Ms Ocasio-Cortez has been subjected to numerous death threats and verbal harassment since she won her primary election in 2018 against House Democratic Caucus chairman Joe Crowley. She has specifically become a subject of right-wing anger and vitriol. In addition, her campaign regularly spends fees as large as $5,000 a month for security consulting since members have to pay for their own security.

In addition, Representative Pramila Jayapal, chairwoman of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, expressed concern.

“I’m worried about a lot of things in terms of the danger to our country, the danger to us personally. The danger to our democracy, I think it’s going to be a very difficult time,” she told The Independent.

Kevin McCarthy wins GOP nomination for House speaker

McCarthy fended off a late challenge from GOP Rep. Andy Biggs of Arizona.

Washington — House Republicans nominated Rep. Kevin McCarthy, the current minority leader, as their candidate for speaker of the House on Tuesday, with McCarthy overcoming a conservative challenger as the party inches closer to winning control of the lower chamber.

McCarthy was tapped as the nominee in an internal meeting of the Republican conference by a secret-ballot vote of 188 to 31, multiple sources in the meeting confirmed to CBS News. The vote means the California Republican is the favorite to become speaker of a GOP-controlled House, but the path to securing the 218 votes needed to claim the gavel during a vote of the full House in January is likely to be a difficult one, since Republicans are poised to hold a razor-thin majority of seats after a weaker-than-expected performance in last week’s midterm elections.

CBS News estimates the GOP will win at least 216 seats and Democrats will control at least 211. Republican candidates are leading in several battleground races in which CBS News has not projected a winner.

McCarthy fended off an 11th-hour challenge for the nomination from Rep. Andy Biggs of Arizona, a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus who was involved in efforts both within Congress and at the state level to reverse the outcome of the 2020 presidential election. Biggs announced his bid Monday night, telling Newsmax in an interview that “we have a new paradigm here, and I think the country wants a different direction from the House of Representatives.”

Republican victory in House paves road to softer dollar while control of US Senate in balance

The U.S. Republican party looks favored to win a midterm election victory, giving it back control of the House of Representatives when the next session of Congress begins in January.

Control of the US Congress hung in the balance on Wednesday after Democrats put up an unexpectedly strong fight in the midterm elections, while Republicans insisted they were on course to take back at least the House of Representatives. Republicans notched up a string of convincing victories, particularly in Florida, where governor Ron DeSantis cruised to re-election by a 20-point margin.

But while the House appeared to be within the grasp of Republicans, control of the Senate remained too close to call, as Democrats appeared to stave off the worst-case scenario that many polls had predicted.

2022 midterm elections: Balance of power at stake

The 2022 midterm elections are shaping up to be some of the most consequential in the nation’s history, with control of Congress at stake.

All 435 seats in the House and 35 of 100 seats in the Senate are on the ballot, as well as several influential gubernatorial elections in battleground states like Arizona, Georgia, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

Democrats are defending their narrow majorities in both chambers. Republican control of either the House or Senate would be enough to curtail most of President Joe Biden’s agenda, and would likely result in investigations against his administration and even his family.

Judge dismisses Wilkinsburg annexation petition

An Allegheny County judge on Friday dismissed a petition that sought to initiate annexation proceedings for Wilkinsburg to be incorporated into the City of Pittsburgh. The petition, filed on Sept. 29, was dismissed in a two-page order by Senior Common Pleas Judge Joe James. In the order, James wrote that the only acceptable procedure for annexation comes from Pennsylvania’s constitution, which requires a referendum in which a majority of voters from each municipality approve the merger.

World Series 2022 Game 2: Philadelphia Phillies v Houston Astros – live!

Rolling report: The Astros host the Phillies in Game 2 of the World Series at Houston’s Minute Maid Park.

Phillies won game 1

Predictions By Hunter Felt

Well, here’s my dilemma: I had the Houston Astros in five before the start of the World Series. So, by my math, that means I have to root for Houston to win these next four games. I’ve kind of painted myself into a corner.

Still, it feels like Philadelphia was aiming for a split here so they won’t be devastated while the Astros pretty much can’t afford to go down 0-2. I’m expecting Houston to come out with all guns blazing. Maybe a 7-2 win.

Of course, I was wrong yesterday so don’t go making bets with my predictions in mind. Have a different prediction? Or the same? Feel free to send your thoughts and analysis here, either via email (to hunter.felt.freelance@theguardian.com) or Twitter (to @HunterFelt).

Ford considering take over of Argo AI’s footprint in Pittsburgh following shutdown and layoff of 679 workers

Ford Motor Co. is considering the possibility of taking over at least some of the space in the Strip District headquarters of Pittsburgh-based autonomous vehicle company Argo AI LLC following the announcement Wednesday that Argo would be shut down.

Ford (NYSE: F) and Volkswagen served as Argo’s largest backers, investing over $1 billion into the startup over the years that at one point put its valuation at more than $7 billion.

Allegheny County mail-in ballots invalid without voter’s declaration

“We had a lot of concern because if the voter doesn’t sign the outer envelope of the ballot, their vote will not count,” said an ACLU.

“We had a lot of concern because if the voter doesn’t sign the outer envelope of the ballot, their vote will not count,” said Sara Rose, deputy legal director.

Dave Voye, manager for Allegheny County’s Elections Division, said less than a dozen out of 180,000 mail-in ballots were missing the voter’s declaration, and that was due to a printing error.

“We were in touch with our printer and we think two envelopes got stuck together. It’s very minimal,” Voye said.

Voye said anyone in possession of an envelope without the voter’s declaration can request another ballot, but it must be mailed in time to be in the Elections Division by 8 p.m. on Election Day.
