Prosecution says Kyle Rittenhouse provoked fatal shootings. Defense says he feared for his life

The 18-year-old shot and killed two men and injured another during the Kenosha unrest in 2020, when he was 17.

Kyle Rittenhouse provoked bloodshed on the streets of Kenosha by bringing a semi-automatic rifle to a protest and menacing others, and when the shooting stopped, he walked off like a “hero in a Western,” a prosecutor said in closing arguments Monday at Rittenhouse’s murder trial.

But Rittenhouse’s lawyer countered that the shooting started after the young man was ambushed by a “crazy person” that night and feared his gun was going to be wrested away and used to kill him. Defense attorney Mark Richards said Rittenhouse acted in self-defense.

An explosion outside Liverpool Women’s Hospital on Remembrance Sunday has been declared a terror incident by police.

A taxi exploded and was engulfed in flames just before 11:00 GMT at a drop-off zone near the entrance, killing the passenger and injuring the driver.

The cabbie, named locally as David Perry, was declared a hero by Liverpool Mayor Joanne Anderson for locking the suspect inside the vehicle.

Four men have been arrested in the city under the Terrorism Act.

Head of Counter Terrorism Policing North West, Russ Jackson, said the taxi passenger appeared to have made an “improvised explosive device” which caused the blast.

The man’s motivation was “yet to be understood”, he added.

Freeport has no cops after chief quits at end of 1st shift; state police covering borough | TribLIVE.com

Freeport hasn’t had a police officer on duty since Nov. 3, when the newly hired police chief quit at the end of his first shift. With no officers left on the force, state police are handling calls in the 1.3-square-mile borough of about 1,700 residents, officials said.

Freeport hasn’t had a police officer on duty since Nov. 3, when the newly hired police chief quit at the end of his first shift.

With no officers left on the force, state police are handling calls in the 1.3-square-mile borough of about 1,700 residents, officials said.

Retired Plum police Sgt. Matthew Feldmeier, 58, was hired as chief Nov. 1 and was sworn in that night by Mayor James Swartz Jr. He was the only applicant for the $53,500-a-year job.

Swartz said Feldmeier worked his first shift during the day on Nov. 2 and participated in interviews that evening to fill two open positions for police officers.

But when the borough secretary arrived at the borough building the following morning, she found the chief’s badge, office keys and a handwritten letter of resignation stating that he was leaving “to pursue other interests,” the mayor said.

Several telephone and text messages seeking comment from Feldmeier were not returned.

The only other police officer on the borough’s roster is Terry Lucas, a part-timer who also works as a police officer at a hospital in Pittsburgh.

But the mayor said Lucas hasn’t worked a shift for the borough in nearly five months because of the demands of his other job.

Swartz said Feldmeier gave him no indication that he was planning to resign.

Greensburg to close deteriorating hospital garage on Dec. 1 | TribLIVE.com

The decades-old deteriorating parking garage attached to Excela Westmoreland Hospital in Greensburg will soon close and be demolished because it is too costly to maintain and repair, a city official said.

“It’s reached the end of its useful life,” Mayor Robert Bell said of the J. Edward Hutchinson Parking Garage, which is connected to the hospital by an enclosed walkway over Shearer Street. Deteriorated steel girders are clearly visible at the front of the garage.

An engineering study revealed that it would cost more than $2 million to perform the needed preventive maintenance, the mayor said. And that work would only extend the useful life of the garage for another three to five years, Bell added.

“We can’t justify that expenditure,” he said, noting the city spent $1 million a few years ago to make repairs at the garage. “You just don’t want to keep doing that.”

Greensburg will seek funding to demolish the 42-year-old garage, Bell said.

A Large Asteroid Will Pass by Earth This Week – Is It a Threat to the Planet?

Recent weeks have witnessed a series of medium-to-large-sized asteroids cross paths with Earth’s orbit. The largest of the pack – asteroid 2004 UE – is on track to make its closest approach to the planet November 13.

Asteroid 2004 UE is approximately 160 meters in diameter and will travel close to the Earth this week. Any object over 140 meters in diameter could cause major damage to cities or coasts if there were to be a collision, said astronomy professor Leslie Looney. “Asteroid 2004 UE is not considered a safety concern since the closest approach to Earth’s orbit on November 13 will be more than 30 times the Earth-moon distance.” Credit: Photo by L. Brian Stauffer

What are near Earth objects, what are they composed of and how do we know?

Near Earth objects are meteoroids, asteroids, or comets with orbits that bring them close to Earth’s orbit. They are the leftovers of our solar system formation process, which means they are the nearly pristine bits and pieces of ice and rocks from which the planets formed. We know their orbits from tracking them, and we know of their composition from examining their reflected and infrared light and by comparisons to objects that we have visited with space missions.

There seem to be a lot of large NEOs in Earths neighborhood in recent weeks. Is this unusual?

Over the last 20 years, NASA has dramatically increased the number of known NEOs – from knowing of less than a thousand to nearly 28,000. The precise dimensions of NEOs can be difficult to resolve due to their small size and great distances. However, those estimated by NASA to be 140 meters or more along their longest axis – most asteroids are potato-shaped, so their dimensions can be described as roughly spherical – have been mandated by Congress to be classified as NEOs. The increase in the number of objects classified as NEOs was in part due to this mandate. Anything of this size could have a catastrophic impact on Earth, destroying cities with large losses of life. This awareness leads to more reporting of objects.

BLM leader Hawk Newsome threatens ‘riots’ after sit-down with Eric Adams

A Black Lives Matter leader vowed there’ll be “riots,” “fire” and “bloodshed” if Mayor-elect Eric Adams follows through with his promise to bring back plainclothes anti-crime cops to battle New York’s surge in violent crimes.

New York BLM co-founder Hawk Newsome debated the plan for a return to tougher policing with Adams during a contentious sit-down at Brooklyn Borough Hall Wednesday that was livestreamed on Instagram.

Although Adams found common ground with the activists on plans to fight poverty in the black community, the former NYPD captain said he’ll be reinstating a revamped version of the undercover anti-crime unit that was disbanded at the height of widespread police protests last year.

“If they think they are going back to the old ways of policing then we’re going to take to the streets again,” New York BLM co-founder Hawk Newsome said outside Borough Hall after the meeting.

Golden Gate Bridge anti-COVID vax rally injures five, including two cops

A car struck two cops and three Golden Gate Bridge workers as authorities tried to corral an anti-COVID vaccine protest at the famous San Francisco span Thursday evening.

Several hundred demonstrators were rallying against the city’s employment vaccine mandate at the mouth of the bridge when the victims were struck by a car in the traffic lane, according to The San Francisco Chronicle.

The two CHP officers and one bridge worker were taken to a hospital, where they were expected to survive their injuries, the newspaper reported.

“They were gathered at the sidewalk entrance onto the Golden Gate Bridge, and apparently there were individuals in the crowd that had stated their intent was to take over the lane of traffic, so our intention at that point was to serve as a deterrent to try to prevent anybody from getting on,” CHP Officer Andrew Barclay reportedly said.
