Woman gives birth at Westmoreland County restaurant on Mother’s Day Weekend
HEMPFIELD TOWNSHIP, Pa. — This Mother’s Day Weekend is one many families in Westmoreland County won’t forget after helping a woman give birth at New City Buffet on Saturday.
“I couldn’t even imagine giving birth in a restaurant, that’s for sure,” said Destiny Nelson, who was at the buffet having dinner with her family on Saturday evening.
While eating, another woman came to Nelson’s table and said someone’s water had broken in the bathroom and asked if she could help.
“I just figured we were going to help her breathe through her contractions until the ambulance arrived, but the baby had other plans,” Nelson said.
The woman in labor was Lynsday Platt.
She was at the buffet for an early Mother’s Day dinner with her fiance and son.
When her water broke, her fiance called 911 dispatchers for help.
He then handed the phone to Nelson so he could help Platt with breathing.
“I was timing her contractions and they were less than 30 seconds apart, so we knew the baby was coming,” Nelson said. “Dispatch said we needed to prep for the delivery.”
Employees at the buffet got clean towels, another woman ran to her car to get blankets, and they took Platt to a private section of the dining room.
“Luckily at the moment the room was empty, there was nobody sitting here, so we pushed all the tables back so she could have an open area, whatever she needed at the moment,” said Jerry Chen, manager of the New City Buffet.
Within 10 minutes, the baby was born.

Donald Trump flies VP contender Doug Burgum with him to massive rally…
If that comes to fruition, it would make Wildwood the largest rally so far in Trump’s 2024 White House run.
There could be 50 contenders on Donald Trump’s vice presidential shortlist — but there was room for only one of them on his campaign plane Saturday.
North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum was a surprise addition to Trump’s manifest as he joined the presumptive GOP nominee for a short flight from LaGuardia Airport to Atlantic City, NJ.
Burgum and his wife Kathryn remained behind on the plane to speak privately with the former president before he stepped out on the tarmac and they all then motorcaded to a huge oceanside rally — in nearby Wildwood.
The Post spoke to Burgum after his speech at the New Jersey rally while he watched alongside his wife, asking him why he thought he was chosen to give the first speech of the night.

Heading to Pittsburgh? Pennsylvania to ban cell phone use while driving and require police to collect traffic stop data
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Pennsylvania will join the majority of states that ban motorists from handling a cell phone for almost any purpose while driving, as backers of the legislation hope to reduce distracted driving accidents and deaths after nearly two decades of pressing the measure.
Gov. Josh Shapiro’s office said Thursday that the Democrat will sign the bill, 18 years after he first introduced a similar bill when he served in the state House of Representatives. The ban will take effect a year after he signs it, which is expected in the coming days.
The bill also includes a provision long-sought by the Pennsylvania Legislative Black Caucus as a bulwark against racial profiling. That provision requires bigger police departments, as well as the Pennsylvania State Police, to collect and publicly report data on traffic stops, including a driver’s race.
The bill passed both chambers of the state Legislature this week and will bring Pennsylvania into alignment with the law on motorists’ cell phone use in every one of its neighboring states. Currently, Pennsylvania’s restriction on cell phone use while driving applies only to texting.
