‘Vote them out’: Willie Nelson headlines Texas protest rally

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Country music legend Willie Nelson led more than a thousand spectators in singing “vote them out” Saturday from the steps of the Texas Capitol during a rally wrapping up a four-day march in support of Democratic state legislators who bolted for Washington two weeks ago to block GOP-backed voting restrictions.

Families with lawn chairs spread out across the sprawling Capitol greens in Austin. Clergy, politicians, constituents and musicians all spoke out about the proposals to impose voter ID requirements, limit ballot drop boxes and mail voting, and strip local officials of their election authority.

The special session that the exodus by Texas Democrats halted is set to expire next week, but Republican Gov. Greg Abbott has pledged to schedule a new one as soon as the lawmakers return to the state.

“If you don’t like who’s in there, vote them out,” Nelson sang, inviting he crowd to join him in singing lyrics he’d previously written about taking a stand at the ballot box.

“I felt like I needed to be here. It is a history-making event that is so necessary right now,” said Brenda Hanson, 75, of Austin. “I am a descendant of slavery and I am not interested in moving back, I want to see this country go forward. I have lived well over three quarters of a century and I have never seen us go backwards like this before.”

Hanson said she is disabled but otherwise would have participated in the nearly 30-mile walk. Instead, she hoped to make a statement with her presence as she sat chanting in support on a bench under a tree.

The march began Wednesday and ended Saturday when participants walked up to the doors of the Texas Capitol building in a rally sponsored by activist group Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival. It was led, in part, by Beto O’Rourke, the former Democratic congressman and presidential candidate who has not ruled out a run for Texas governor in 2022. Earlier this week, O’Rourke and marchers shut down the frontage road of Interstate 35 during the morning rush hour, funneled between restaurants and cut a path from Republican-controlled statehouse districts to Democratic ones.

Marchers compared what the GOP says are measures meant to protect against fraud and restore confidence in American elections to Jim Crow-style restrictions. There has been no evidence of widespread fraud in the 2020 election.

“I ask you to think about every man and every woman who had the courage in their convictions and did what they needed to do in their own moment of truth in this country’s history,” O’Rourke told the crowd.

Pittsburgh-shot horror film Massacre Academy set for local premiere | Screen | Pittsburgh | Pittsburgh City Paper

Pittsburgh has a strong connection to horror films. From being featured in George A. Romero’s Living Dead movies to Silence of the Lambs, we love a good scare. It makes sense that many indie filmmakers in the city have gravitated toward the horror genre, and Massacre Academy makes one more to add to the list.

Massacre Academy will have its red carpet premiere on Sat., July 31 at the Lamp Theatre in Irwin, Pa. In an email, the film’s writer/director Mark Cantu describes it as an ’80s slasher comedy. Cantu, who produces films under his Pittsburgh-based independent film production Cineworx, says the film was shot locally during the pandemic. Besides using a local cast and crew, Massacre Academy also features horror heavyweights like Felissa Rose, noted for playing the lead character in the 1983 cult horror film Sleepaway Camp.

Massacre Academy follows Kris McNeil (played by Jess Uhler), one of few survivors of a brutal series of murders by a slasher known as Carnie (Dave Sheridan). The film is set in 1987, two years after the massacre when Carnie is presumed dead. The trailer features a soundbite that says Carnie “sank to the bottom of a lake and drowned” but, as happens in horror films, a new series of killings begins and all signs point to him.

Tickets for the premiere are still available but limited, so get them while they last.

Pittsburgh is a ‘craft beer destination’ says American Craft Beer

A national website names Pittsburgh a craft beer destination.

Pittsburgh’s craft beer scene is booming and it’s not just locals who are taking notice.

Thirsty folks from American Craft Beer, a website dedicated to national brew news, recently paid a visit to our fair city to soak up the hoppy culture and its liquid assets. Not, surprisingly, they were impressed.

The Washington, D.C.-based bloggers had this to say:

“Pittsburgh turned out to be more interesting, more vibrant and more fun than we ever expected, and its beer scene, which is pretty amazing, was only part of the ride. Any great beer destination starts with a combination of things, the city, its people, character and vibe … and, of course, its beer. And as it turns out, Pittsburgh has all of those things in spades.”

Weeks After Manifest’s NBC Cancellation, It’s Still Hitting A Major Netflix Milestone – CINEMABLEND

Manifest is still flying around Netflix even after the cancellation.

Manifest entered its 23rd straight day as the #1 show on Netflix on July 5, according to Forbes, and it’s still holding that spot on July 8 and could become the most popular show on the streamer. The series is officially tied with Tiger King, which was also #1 for 27 days, meaning it just needs to beat out Ginny & Georgia, which Forbes reports was #1 for 29 days. Out of the five most-watched adult-targeted programs on Netflix, Manifest is the only non-Netflix show, which really says a lot. And makes many wonder why Netflix chose to pass on the series.

Shortly after NBC cancelled Manifest, many fans were hopeful that the show would find new life on Netflix, considering how well it was doing. There’s also the fact that Netflix promoted the first two seasons multiple times on their social media pages. However, just a week after NBC cancelled Manifest, news broke that Netflix passed on the series as well, which came to a surprise to many fans since it was, and still is, the #1 show on the platform.

‘Manifest’ Could Become Netflix’s Most Popular Show Ever

As the show continues to dominate the Top 10 charts, we must ask: Is Manifest the most popular series on Netflix…ever?

Something unprecedented is happening over on Netflix right now. Manifest is in the midst of a historic run on the Top 10 charts, as the program just completed its 23rd consecutive day in the #1 position—a feat only two other shows have accomplished: Ginny & Georgia and Tiger King.

And as the show inches closer and closer to claiming the best streak ever, we must ask: is Manifest the most popular series on Netflix…ever?

The world’s biggest streaming service has produced several shows over the past few years that were mega-hits—but it’s difficult to determine exactly which one was the most popular. The streaming service claims that Bridgerton had a record 82 million views in its first 28 days. But Bridgerton was only able to overtake The Witcher’s previous record of 76 million views because Netflix’s subscriber base had grown so exponentially during the coronavirus pandemic.

Then we have to consider the Top 10 charts. Last year, I formed a points-based system that allowed me to rank every show’s popularity based on their Top 10 placements each day (here are the 2021 rankings, in case you’re curious). And while this system doesn’t give us hard numbers, it does let us know which shows have been the most consistently popular on Netflix.

Pittsburgh beefing up security presence for Downtown celebrations this weekend | TribLIVE.com

With full-blown Fourth of July celebrations back for this year’s holiday weekend, Pittsburgh Public Safety officials are stepping up security for events Downtown and in Point State Park.

After the pandemic canceled celebrations in the city last year, Pittsburgh Public Safety Director Wendell Hissrich said as many as 200,000 people are expected to crowd into Downtown and Point State Park for fireworks and other activities on Saturday and Sunday.

“We expect this to be one of the busiest nights of the year with people eager to gather together after a challenging time,” Hissrich said. “But Public Safety’s primary focus will always be to protect residents and visitors so they can safely enjoy Independence Day with their families and friends.”

Hissrich said there will be more than a dozen mobile light towers at key locations to increase visibility Downtown. Also, Pittsburgh police, state police and Allegheny County Mounted Units will be activated to keep crowds moving and allow first responders to reach people in the event of an emergency.

As part of the effort to head off rowdiness, Point State Park Rangers will help Pittsburgh Police with bag screenings at the Park’s entrances.

The fireworks are scheduled to end at 10 p.m. on Sunday. Hissrich said police will be working with Port Authority personnel to move people out of the Downtown core as quickly as possible to reduce problems related to overcrowding in some areas at the end of the evening.

‘Manifest’ Canceled By NBC After 3 Seasons – Deadline

EXCLUSIVENBC has opted not to renew missing-plane drama series Manifest for a fourth season. The decision came down Monday night, just hours before the options on the cast were to expire Tuesday and amid a strong showing of Manifest on Netflix, where it has been No. 1 in the U.S. for the past three days.

Manifest, from Warner Bros. TV and Universal TV, was the highest-rated on linear among NBC’s four bubble shows by a wide margin, especially in total viewers. Of the four, three — Debris, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist and now Manifest, have been canceled. The remaining series, Good Girls, is looking good for renewal.

Manifest was conceived by creator Jeff Rake and was sold to NBC with a six-season plan that has been mapped out. That plan — and fans’ three years of devoted following — will fall through unless another network/platform steps in to pick up the series following its NBC cancellation.

Belmont Stakes 2021: Essential Quality win ends Triple Crown Season – Sports Illustrated

Essential Quality won the 153rd running of the Belmont Stakes, the third and final leg of the Triple Crown for thoroughbred racing.

Brad Cox’s gray colt remained a 2-1 favorite leading into the race with Kentucky Derby third-place finisher Hot Rod Charlie being the second choice in the wagering at 7-2 over an hour before the race began.

This Triple Crown season has been dramatic and tumultuous thanks to another Bob Baffert drug scandal. His horse, Medina Spirit, won the Kentucky Derby, but then tested positive for the steroid betamethasone afterward, throwing the world of horse racing into turmoil. In a statement released by Baffert, he alleged that Medina Spirit’s positive drug test could be explained by an ointment used to treat dermatitis on the racehorse.

Model planes signal Westmoreland air show | TribLIVE.com

By Jeff Himler:

Members of the Laurel Highlands Model Airplane Club arranged a display of model planes in April at Greensburg’s East Pittsburgh Street Shop ‘n Save supermarket. It’s the second year for the display, which promotes the Westmoreland County Airshow that the grocery chain sponsors.

This year’s models were based on World War II planes, in keeping with the “Tora, Tora, Tora” Pearl Harbor simulation.

Both the club and the supermarket have ground-based displays at the air show. The club showcases a variety of its members’ model aircraft. Shop ‘n Save’s exhibit includes NASCAR race cars, dragsters and a vehicle billed as the world’s largest and fastest grocery cart — with a 360 horsepower motor and a capacity of 160 bags of groceries.

Shop ‘n Save makes a donation to the Feherty’s Troops First Foundation, which helps service members who were wounded in Iraq or Afghanistan.
