Summer Lee beats Bhavini Patel in contentious Democratic primary for Pittsburgh congressional seat

Incumbent Progressive Congresswoman Summer Lee fended off a more moderate challenger to win the Democratic primary for the 12th Congressional District on Tuesday against Bhavini Patel, an Edgewood Council member.

Ms. Lee’s victory, leading by 18 percentage points and about 11,000 votes with 55% of ballots counted when the Associated Press called the race Tuesday night, caps one of the most closely watched races in southwestern Pennsylvania this cycle and confirms the ongoing strength of the progressive wing of the Democratic Party in Western Pennsylvania. Ms. Patel had attempted to cast Ms. Lee as too far to the left for the district, challenging her on positions related to the Israel-Hamas War, support for President Joe Biden, her presence in the district, and other issues.
