Fast-moving storm dumps quarter inch of rain; thousands left without power

A line of powerful thunderstorms moved through the region Wednesday evening, leaving several thousand customers of Duquesne Light and West Penn Power without electricity.

The National Weather Service had issued a hazardous weather forecast and a tornado watch for the region; heavy rain struck about 8 p.m., and a possible tornado was reported in Portage and Trumbull counties in Ohio, about 110 miles northwest of Pittsburgh.

The tornado watch, in effect until midnight, covered the counties of Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Crawford, Erie, Greene, Lawrence, Mercer, Venango and Washington.
