Police: Man shot by Pittsburgh officer reached into vehicle’s trunk that contained firearms

Allegheny County police on Thursday released new details after a man was shot by police in the city’s South Side Slopes neighborhood.

According to ACPD, Pittsburgh Police were dispatched to the 1900 block of Huron Street for a ShotSpotter notification around 1:40 a.m.

An officer encountered a man outside a residence. That man was later identified as 26-year-old Austyn Cousins. The officer engaged with Cousins near his vehicle on Huron Street, police said. Cousins initially complied with the officer’s orders and notified the officer there were firearms in the trunk of his vehicle. The trunk of the vehicle was open at the time of the encounter.

A few moments later, police said Cousins abruptly moved towards the trunk. The officer yelled for Cousins to step away. Cousins then reached into the trunk of the vehicle, and police said the officer fired his gun, striking Cousins multiple times.
