A city spokeswoman did not respond to an email seeking comment on the ban.
But according to the city website, where the new rules are posted, the ban requires all retail establishments to stop providing shoppers with single-use plastic bags. The goal is to “promote the use of sustainable alternatives.”
It applies to all retail businesses including supermarkets, convenience stores, service stations, department stores, dollar stores, clothing stores, restaurants, cafeterias, festivals, food trucks, farmers’ markets and delivery services. Businesses were required to post signage informing customers of the change in July.
For some, the change will be simple enough: Grocers such as Aldi, Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods have already eliminated plastic bags.
Others have launched awareness campaigns.
