The Pittsburgh Pirates donated metal detectors valued at more than $250,000 to Pittsburgh Public Schools to support safety measures throughout the district.
In all, the district received 30 walk-through metal detectors and 30 divesting tables. It was provided to PPS officials Tuesday morning during an event at PNC Park.
The donation from the Pirates comes as the school district, the second largest in Pennsylvania, is working to strengthen its security. Last week, the school board voted 5-4 to use a $27,000 grant to cover costs of police training for four district security guards.
