@Starbucks The police were called because these men hadn’t ordered anything. They were waiting for a friend to show up, who did as they were taken out in handcuffs for doing nothing. All the other white ppl are wondering why it’s never happened to us when we do the same thing.

“What did they do,” one man can be heard saying in the video. Another says, “They didn’t do anything, I saw the entire thing.”

Late Saturday, Starbucks’ CEO Kevin Johnson issued a statement saying the situation had a “reprehensible outcome.” He promised the company has “immediately begun a thorough investigation of our practices.”

Johnson insisted “Starbucks stands firmly against discrimination or racial profiling.”

Waiting until the last minute to file taxes? You’re not alone

If you still haven’t filed your tax return (which is due April 17 this year), you’re far from alone

The IRS processes about 152 million individual returns every year. As of April 6, just over 103 million had been filed. That means nearly 50 million taxpayers have either spent the last week scrambling to locate key documents and file their returns, or have scrambled to locate key documents and instead filed for an extension.

irs-filing-pie.png

Nearly 1 in 10 tax filers takes advantage of an even further delay that IRSautomatically grants: the 6-month extension. About 14 million Americans will get an extension this year, the IRS said in a press release.

An extension, however, only serves to delay any refund you have coming; any tax owed must be paid by Tuesday.

Pens-Flyers Game 2 Recap: Penguins unlucky on Friday the 13th, lose 5-1 – PensBurgh

By

1st Period

Both teams were feeling each other out through much of the first period. The Flyers brought much more physicality to the contest and made sure to finish their checks early on.

There wasn’t a lot of meaningful action to report. The Penguins hit the post a few times throughout the period, but never found the back of the net.

With 1:30 left in the first frame, Zach Aston-Reese was penalized for boarding Ivan Provorov. With 36.9 seconds left, Shayne Gostisbehere capitalized on a failed clear and shot the puck pastMatt Murray for a 1-0 lead.

The period would conclude with the 1-0 Philadelphia lead intact.

2nd Period

47 seconds into the period, Sean Couturier was the beneficiary of the puck bouncing off Kris Letang’s body and the Flyers would extend their lead to 2-0.

Claude Giroux delivered a brutal backside hit to Kris Letang near the halfway mark of the second period. Letang would leave the ice under his own power.

With 12:28 left in the period, Travis Konecny was called for roughing Chad Ruhwedel. The penalty was killed by the Flyers after a few good Penguins chances.

Four minutes later, Patric Hornqvist and Andrew MacDonald were sent off for matching slashing minors.

Sidney Crosby was sprung on a breakaway, but was denied by Brian Elliott.

With five minutes left in the period, Travis Sanheim was penalized for hooking Derick Brassard. This power-play effort resulted in absolutely nothing for the Penguins.

With 1:37 left in the period, Wayne Simmonds was cited for roughing Evgeni Malkin. Kris Letang would return to the bench before the start of the power-play.

The Penguins ran out of time at the end of the period to halve the deficit. The Flyers would maintain their 2-0 lead through forty minutes of play.

3rd Period

The carryover power-play time expired to resume 5v5 play.

1:29 into the third period, Travis Konecny would extend the Flyers lead to 3-0. He would not be denied by the defense or Matt Murray.

Four minutes into the period, Bryan Rust was called for slashing. Nolan Patrick would bury an easy one, catching Murray out of position. The lead was upped to 4-0.

Right after the power-play goal, Patric Hornqvist would snap the shutout. Hornqvist simply beatBrandon Manning to beat the goaltender.

With 13 minutes left in regulation, the goalscorer, Hornqvist, was called for roughing Nolan Patrick. The penalty would be killed off.

9:29 remained in regulation when Wayne Simmonds was penalized again for slashing Malkin. During the power-play, Hornqvist was cross-checked into boards by Andrew MacDonald. He was called for boarding while Hornqvist was called for embellishment.

The Penguins pulled Murray for the extra attacker with four minutes left in regulation. Hornqvist and Brandon Manning were subsequently sent off for the rest of the contest with matching misconduct penalties.

Andrew MacDonald scored the empty-netter. 5-1 Flyers.

The game would come to an end with the Flyers taking Game 2 by a score of 5-1.

Woman’s body found near where SUV plunged into river with family

LEGGETT, Calif. — Searchers looking for a family of four whose SUV plunged into a Northern California river have found the body of a woman believed to be from the vehicle, authorities said Friday. The woman had not been formally identified but Mendocino County Sheriff Thomas Allman earlier said the body was believed to have been one of the people in the car.

A search team found the body about 7 miles south of where the family’s SUV fell into the rain-swollen Eel River last week, Allman told a news conference in the community of Leggett.

Initially, Allman said the body was that of a child but the sheriff’s office later corrected that it was a woman’s.

Mega Millions winner is New Jersey food production manager

The winner of a $533 million lottery jackpot wasn’t sure he could believe his eyes. So, when his mother called to say someone in his new home state had won it, his response was: It wasn’t me.

Forty-seven-year-old Richard Wahl, of Vernon, New Jersey, was introduced Friday during a news conference at lottery headquarters after winning the half-billion March Mega Millions drawing, the largest single jackpot in state history.

Wahl, a production manager at a food services company in the northern part of the state, said he plans to retire and take the cash payout over the annuity, totaling $220.7 million after taxes.

“It was truly amazing. Some of my family members were sleeping so I didn’t go and scream out. I walked upstairs. I saw my wife … and said, ‘Baby, we get to go on vacation.’ She said, ‘What are you talking about? Don’t be an idiot.'”

Why credit card signature requirements are now a thing of the past

Most major credit cards are dropping the requirement to sign a receipt or bill, citing changing technology

Credit card signatures are now going the way of old-fashioned carbon copy slips: discarded in favor of streamlined transactions.

The three major credit card companies will stop requiring signatures on purchases this week, with MasterCard, American Express and Discover relaxing their policies on Friday and Visa set to do so on Saturday. It doesn’t mean that you won’t be asked to sign receipts ever again, but the change is likely to result in fewer of your John Hancocks landing on the dotted line.

The reason for the change is due to technology and changing consumer habits. Inan October blog post about the pending changes, MasterCard said that more than 4 out of 5 transactions in North America didn’t require a signature at checkout.

Getting rid of the signature requirement “is another step in the digital evolution of payment and payment security,” MasterCard executive vice president Linda Kirkpatrick wrote in the blog post.

For many years cardholders were required to sign their name when they purchased something by credit or debit card. But think about the purchases you’ve made over the past week or month. How many of them required you to sign on the dotted line? In my case, I made three quick stops on the way into work this morning and didn’t scribble my name for any of those purchases.mc_card_stndrd_5BIN_lmc

Did you know that more than 80 percent of Mastercard in store transactions in North America today do not require a cardholder signature at checkout? That number could now reach 100 percent after April 2018, when we will no longer require signatures at checkout for any credit or debit purchases in Canada and the U.S.

Eliminating the need for signature is another step in the digital evolution of payments and payment security. At first glance, this might sound like a radical proclamation, especially to people who have had credit and debit cards for decades. However, the change matches all of our expectations for fast and convenient shopping experiences. Our consumer research found that a majority of people believe it would be easier to pay and that checkout lines would move faster if they didn’t need to sign when making a purchase.

Trump orders Syria strikes: Will attacks lead to US war with Russia? | Fox News

All sides of this conflict, no matter their loyalties, must work to end the Syrian Civil War once and for all. If not, a much greater crisis could be in the offing.

After President Trump’s Friday night announcement that U.S., French and British military forces have launched missile strikes against Syria’s chemical weapons capabilities in response to that nation’s recent deadly attack on its own citizens with poison gas, the world wonders: Will the American action spark a war between the U.S. and Russia?

CIA Director Mike Pompeo pointed out Thursday that the U.S. has already killed a large number of Russians in Syria. “A handful of weeks ago, the Russians met their match,” Pompeo said at a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on his nomination to become secretary of state. “A couple hundred Russians were killed.”

Netflix pulls out of Cannes amid feud with festival – CBS News

NEW YORK — The feud between Netflix and Cannes Film Festival is growing. Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s chief content officer, on Wednesday said the streaming giant is pulling its films from the Cannes Film Festival, further intensifying an ongoing dispute between Netflix and the world’s most prestigious film festival.

Cannes earlier banned any films without theatrical distribution in France from its Palme d’Or competition. That essentially rules out Netflix movies, which are released either on a day-and-date strategy — meaning simultaneously on Netflix and in some theaters — or simply go straight to Netflix. In France, it’s a law that films can’t be released on home entertainment platforms until 36 months after their theatrical release.

That still left Netflix the option of participating outside of competition at Cannes. But in an interview with Variety published Wednesday, Sarandos said he doesn’t want to send Netflix releases if they won’t be treated equally with other movies.

Newborn safe after being left in ‘baby box’ outside fire department

”We don’t know the situation, but to make this choice, to be strong enough to make this choice is wonderful.”

For the second time in five months, an infant has been left in a baby box at a northwestern Indiana volunteer fire station.

WSBT reports the infant still had the umbilical cord attached.

“The whole first responder, father thing kicks in. You want to make sure that the baby is OK,” Kohler said.

He said there are no words to describe how he felt when he heard the child crying inside.

“When I pulled the baby out of the box, actually my first thought was ‘baby Grace’… ‘Saving Grace.’ It just popped into my head,” said Kohler.

Kohler said he wants to thank Grace’s parents for putting the child somewhere safe.

“We don’t know the situation, but to make this choice, to be strong enough to make this choice is wonderful,” said Kohler.

The girl appeared healthy and was taken to a hospital for care. She will be placed in the custody of the Indiana Department of Child Services.

On Nov. 7, another baby girl was safely rescued after being left in the box. She was named “Hope.”

The padded, climate-controlled baby box was installed about two years ago. There’s also one near Fort Wayne.

Conor Lamb sworn in as congressman

Conor Lamb is the newest member of the House of Representatives.

“One of the the things I have my eye on is, they’ve decided they want to spend a lot of new money on the heroin epidemic, but we have to decide how much is going to go to law enforcement, how much is going to go to treatment, how much is going to go to prevention. I’d really like to be part of that debate,” Lamb said.

U.S. officials: Blood samples show nerve agent, chlorine in Syria gas attack

Two U.S. officials said they were “confident” in the intelligence, though not 100 percent sure.

WASHINGTON — The U.S. now has blood and urine samples from last Saturday’s deadly attack in Syria that have tested positive for chemical weapons, according to two U.S. officials familiar with the intelligence.

The samples suggested the presence of both chlorine gas and an unnamed nerve agent, two officials said. Typically, such samples are obtained through hospitals and collected by U.S. or foreign intelligence assets on the ground. The officials said they were “confident” in the intelligence, though not 100 percent sure.

The Assad regime is known to have stocks of the nerve agent sarin, and has previously used a mixture of chlorine and sarin in attacks, say U.S. officials.

An attorney for a man accused of having a baby with his daughter says the couple, the infant, and the woman’s adoptive father are dead

NEW MILFORD, Conn. — Police in three states are investigating the apparent murder-suicide deaths of a father and daughter accused of incest, their infant son, and the woman’s adoptive father.

Police in Knightdale, N.C. say they responded to a home around 9 a.m. where Steven Pladl, 45, and his biological daughter Katie Pladl, 20, were living when they were arrested on incest charges out of Henrico County, Va. in January. There, they found 7-month-old Bennett Pladl dead in a suspected homicide. No one else was in the home.

About 20 minutes earlier, 600 miles north in New Milford, Conn., police responded to a report of a shooting and found a man and a woman dead in a pickup truck with New York plates, the victims of a double homicide. Police developed information on a suspect vehicle, and when New York state troopers found the minivan several miles away across the state line in Dover, the suspected gunman was found inside — dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Speaking at a press conference Wednesday, Knightdale Police Chief Lawrence Capps confirmed the victims killed in the pickup truck were Katie Pladl and her adoptive father 56-year-old Anthony Fusco, and that the man who killed himself in New York was Steven Pladl.

Knightdale police confirmed to Crimesider that Steven Pladl is suspected in the death of his infant son in North Carolina.

Boy, 16, dies after being crushed by minivan in school parking lot despite 2 calls to 911 | Fox News

Ohio authorities are investigating how a sixteen-year-old student was crushed to death in the back of a minivan at a school parking lot despite calling 911 two times with his exact location.

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office is launching an investigation into the death of 16-year-old Kyle Plush, whose body was discovered by his father six hours after he called 911 begging for help and giving dispatchers the correct description of the minivan and his location.

According to audio recordings, Plush called 911 at least twice Tuesday afternoon while he was trapped in the 2002 Honda Odyssey minivan outside Seven Hills School. The third-row seat flipped and had him pinned inside.

“I’m going to die here,” the sophomore told the dispatcher during his first 911 call, which was placed shortly after 3 p.m. Tuesday. “I probably don’t have much time left. Tell my mom I love her if I die.”

A Tree Falls In Puerto Rico, And 840,000 Customers Lose Power : NPR

A single tree plunged more than half of the island’s population into darkness. It was a humbling reminder for some that power restoration is not yet complete in more remote parts of the island.

One tree was all it took. Around 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, a wayward trunk tumbled over onto a major transmission line in Puerto Rico’s still-fragile electrical grid and cut power to roughly 840,000 customers, affecting more than half of the island’s population.

Officials from the island’s electric utility company – PREPA — said the accident occurred in the region of Cayey, where crews were working to restore power to people still waiting nearly seven months after Hurricane Maria. Increasingly, that work requires clearing away heavily forested mountainsides to gain access to the large utility poles that carry transmission lines from one mountain peak to the next.

4 in 10 millennials don’t know 6 millions Jews were killed in Holocaust, study shows – CBS News

Survey of U.S. adults found “critical gaps both in awareness of basic facts as well as detailed knowledge of the Holocaust”

NEW YORK — More than one-fifth of millennials in the U.S. — 22 percent — haven’t heard of, or aren’t sure if they’ve heard of, the Holocaust, according to a study published Thursday, on Israel’s Holocaust Remembrance Day. The study, which was commissioned by The Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany and conducted by Schoen Consulting, also found that 11 percent of U.S. adults overall haven’t heard of the Holocaust or aren’t sure if they did.

Additionally, 41 percent of millennials believe two million Jews or fewer were killed during the Holocaust, the study found. Six million Jews were killed in World War II by Nazi Germany and its accomplices.

Two-thirds of millennials could not identify in the survey what Auschwitz was.

“The survey found there are critical gaps both in awareness of basic facts as well as detailed knowledge of the Holocaust,” said a news release on the findings.

Algeria military plane crash: 257 dead near Algiers – BBC News

The aircraft came down just after taking off from Boufarik military airport, west of Algiers.

An inquiry is under way into the cause of the crash – Algeria’s worst-ever air disaster. The government has declared three days of national mourning.

Most of the dead are army personnel and their families, the defence ministry says. Ten crew members also died.

Passengers from Western Sahara, a disputed territory annexed by Morocco after Spain withdrew in 1975, were among the fatalities.

The Polisario Front, which is seeking independence for the territory and is backed by Algeria, says 30 Western Saharans, including women and children, died. A senior member of Algeria’s ruling FLN party said those killed included 26 Polisario members.
