Pittsburgh to consider restrictions on plastic bags | TribLIVE.com

Pittsburgh City Council will be considering legislation to restrict single-use plastic bags under a resolution introduced Tuesday by Councilwoman Erika Strassburger.

“It’s not the kind of product that should be used once and then thrown away,” Strassburger said. “If we’re truly going to have a circular economy, we have to think about how we’re using plastic.”

‘Out-of-control’ Chinese rocket falling to Earth could partially survive re-entry | Space | The Guardian

Part of a huge rocket that launched China’s first module for its Tianhe space station is falling back to Earth and could make an uncontrolled re-entry at an unknown landing point.

The 30-metre high core of the Long March 5B rocket launched the “Heavenly Harmony” unmanned core module into low Earth orbit on 29 April from Wenchang in China’s Hainan province.

The Long March 5B then itself entered a temporary orbit, setting the stage for one of the largest ever uncontrolled re-entries. Some experts fear it could land on an inhabited area.

“It’s potentially not good,” said Jonathan McDowell, Astrophysicist at the Astrophysics Center at Harvard University.

Since the weekend it has dropped nearly 80km in altitude and Space

News reported that amateur ground observations showed it was tumbling and not under control. This, and its speed, makes it impossible to predict where it will land when Earth’s atmosphere eventually drags it down, though McDowell said the most likely outcome is that it will fall into the sea, as the ocean covers about 71% of the planet.

Mexico City metro overpass collapses onto road; 20 dead

MEXICO CITY (AP) — An elevated section of the Mexico City metro collapsed and sent a subway car plunging toward a busy boulevard late Monday, killing at least 20 people and injuring about 70, city officials said.

A crane was working to hold up one subway car left dangling on the collapsed section so that emergency workers could enter to check the car to see if anyone was still trapped. Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum said 49 of the injured were hospitalized, and that seven were in serious condition and undergoing surgery.

Sheinbaum said a motorist had been pulled alive from a car that was trapped on the roadway below. Dozens of rescuers continued searching through wreckage from the collapsed, preformed concrete structure.

“There are unfortunately children among the dead,” Sheinbaum said, without specifying how many. ,

The overpass was about 5 meters (16 feet) above the road in the southside borough of Tlahuac, but the train ran above a concrete median strip, which apparently lessened the casualties among motorists on the roadway below.

“A support beam gave way,” Sheinbaum said, adding that the beam collapsed just as the train passed over it.

Rescue efforts were briefly interrupted at midnight because the partially dangling train was “very weak.”

“We don’t know if they are alive,” Sheinbaum said of the people possibly trapped inside the subway car.

Hundreds of police officers and firefighters cordoned off the scene as desperate friends and relatives of people believed to be on the trains gathered outside the security perimeter.

Oscar López, 26, was searching for his friend, Adriana Salas, 26. Six months pregnant, she was riding the subway home from her work as a dentist when her phone stopped answering around the time the accident occurred.

“We lost contact with her, at 10:50 p.m., there was literally no more contact,” López said. With little information and a still serious coronavirus situation in Mexico City, López said “they are not telling us anything, and people are just crowding together.”

The collapse occurred on the newest of the Mexico City subway’s lines, Line 12, which stretches far into the city’s southside. Like many of the city’s dozen subway lines, it runs underground through more central areas of the city of 9 million, but then runs on elevated, pre-formed concrete structures on the city’s outskirts.

Hillary Clinton warns of ‘huge consequences’ in Afghan US troop withdrawal – BBC News

Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has warned of “huge consequences” of President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw American troops from Afghanistan.

Mrs Clinton told CNN there was a risk the Taliban – the Islamist group ousted in 2001 by the US-led invasion – could retake control.

The US aims to complete the withdrawal by 11 September.

However, the Taliban have been carrying out more attacks.

“This is what we call a wicked problem,” Mrs Clinton told CNN. “There are consequences both foreseen and unintended of staying and of leaving,” she said.

Mrs Clinton, like Mr Biden a Democrat, was a strong supporter of the US intervention in Afghanistan after the 9/11 attacks in 2001.

Washington Post, New York Times, NBC retract reports that said Giuliani was warned by FBI he was target of Russian disinformation operation – CNN

New York (CNN Business)The Washington Post, The New York Times, and NBC News on Saturday issued significant corrections, retracting earlier reporting that said Rudy Giuliani had been directly warned by the FBI that he was the target of a Russian disinformation campaign.

The stories came out after Giuliani’s office and residence were raided by the FBI on Thursday. The searches were linked to a criminal probe of the former mayor’s business dealings in Ukraine and resulted in the seizure of several communications devices.
“An earlier version of this story, published Thursday, incorrectly reported that One America News was warned by the FBI that it was the target of a Russian influence operation,” read the correction by The Post, which first reported the news. “That version also said the FBI had provided a similar warning to Rudolph W. Giuliani, which he has since disputed.”
“This version has been corrected to remove assertions that OAN and Giuliani received the warnings,” the correction added.

SpaceX Crew Dragon astronauts arrive home with rare pre-dawn splashdown in Gulf of Mexico – CBS News

Four astronauts strapped into their SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule, undocked from the International Space Station and plunged to a fiery pre-dawn splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico on Sunday, closing out the first operational flight of SpaceX’s futuristic touch-screen ferry ship.

Crew-1 commander Michael Hopkins, along with NASA astronauts Victor Glover and Shannon Walker and Japanese astronaut Soichi Noguchi, disconnected from the space-facing port of the station’s forward Harmony module at 8:35 p.m. EDT Saturday.

That set up only the second piloted water landing for NASA’s post-shuttle commercial crew program and just the third night splashdown in space history — the first in nearly 45 years.

2 dead, plus gunman, 1 wounded in Oneida Casino shooting

Brown County Sheriff’s Lt. Kevin Pawlak said investigators believe the gunman was seeking a specific person with whom he was angry.

“He was targeting a specific victim who was not there, but he decided to still shoot some of the victim’s friends or co-workers, it appears,” Pawlak said.

Neither the gunman nor the shooting victims were immediately identified.

Pawlak wasn’t sure if the shooter was a former employee of the restaurant, but said “it appears there’s some relationship that had to do with employment.”

“Whether or not they all worked there, we’re still working on,” he said.

The wounded person was being treated at a Milwaukee hospital, Pawlak said.

The casino is operated by the Oneida Nation on the western side of Green Bay.

It tweeted that an active shooter was on the scene.

Jawad Yatim, a witness, said he saw at least two people shot.

“I know for sure two, because it happened right next to us, literally right next to us,” Yatim said. “But he was shooting pretty aggressively in the building, so I wouldn’t doubt him hitting other people.”

Yatim said the shooting began in a casino restaurant.

“We got the hell out of there, thank God we’re OK, but obviously we wish the best for everybody who’s been shot,” he said.

Attorney General Josh Kaul tweeted shortly before 10 p.m. that the scene was “contained. There is no longer a threat to the community.”

The ‘Gun Sovereignty’ Bill Passed At The Last Second – Banning Police Officers From Enforcing Federal Gun Laws – Diamond & Silk

House Bill 1957 would effectively ban law enforcement from enforcing federal gun laws that are in opposition to the right to bear arms as described in the U.S. Constitution.

Federal gun laws include requirement of registration, tracking, or banning possession of firearms.

Rep. Jeff Wardlaw said, “We went through Senate bill 298 and we tried to include all the language that was possible that did not interfere with the Game and Fish funding. It did not interfere with the cases that were being tried at the moment prior to January 1 and basically this is the sausage that came out of that factory.”

NKorea warns US of ‘very grave situation’ over Biden speech

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea on Sunday warned the United States will face “a very grave situation” because President Joe Biden “made a big blunder” in his recent speech by calling the North a security threat and revealing his intent to maintain a hostile policy toward it.

Last week, Biden, in his first address to Congress, called North Korea and Iran’s nuclear programs “a serious threat to America’s security and world security,” and said he’ll work with allies to address those problems through diplomacy and stern deterrence.

“His statement clearly reflects his intent to keep enforcing the hostile policy toward the DPRK as it had been done by the U.S. for over half a century,” Kwon Jong Gun, a senior North Korean Foreign Ministry official, said in a statement.

“It is certain that the U.S. chief executive made a big blunder in the light of the present-day viewpoint,” Kwon said. “Now that the keynote of the U.S. new DPRK policy has become clear, we will be compelled to press for corresponding measures, and with time the U.S. will find itself in a very grave situation.”

Delayed census data kicks off flood of redistricting lawsuits – POLITICO

States are months away from getting the census data they need to draw new political maps, but courts are already filling up with lawsuits challenging the redistricting process.

One of the Democratic Party’s most prominent lawyers quickly filed three suits in states where neither Republicans nor Democrats have full control over the redistricting process, in preparation for court action to resolve potential impasses over new maps. Ohio and Alabama are suing the Census Bureau over its delayed timeline for giving the states what they need to draw maps. New York is even contemplating legal action after the census count showed it missed out on an extra House seat by just 89 people.

Paramedics attacked, house set on fire: 3 brothers charged after incidents in Baldwin

BALDWIN, Pa. —Three brothers are facing charges following incidents that took place over the past two days in Baldwin Borough.

According to a criminal complaint, the incidents began Wednesday at a home on Revo Road in Baldwin Borough.

Court documents filed against Philip and Paul Chalmers, both 49, of Baldwin, said the pair attacked and threatened to kill paramedics who were trying to help their father who was in respiratory distress following a medical emergency.

Five paramedics told police the brothers attacked them and claimed they weren’t doing enough to help their father.

Their father was rushed to the hospital, where he died, and court documents allege that upon hearing the news, the brothers went outside, picked up a traffic cone and threw it through the window of a Baldwin ambulance.

The brothers are facing several charges including aggravated assault and obstructing emergency services.

Police said on Thursday a third brother, Vincent Chalmers, 46, set the family home on fire.

Chalmers was taken into custody by Pennsylvania State Police in Meadville, where he is being lodged locally awaiting extradition to Allegheny County to face arson charges.

The owner of the Revo Road home, who also lives nearby, said he saw Chalmers pouring gasoline around the house and then saw flames.

National Park Service calls for volunteers to kill bison at Grand Canyon | Fox News

The National Park Service (NPS) is looking for volunteers to assist in killing hundreds of bison on the North Rim of Arizona’s Grand Canyon National Park.

“Shooting animals accustomed to a non-threatening human presence — the park attracts nearly 6 million visitors a year — is a betrayal,” the Humane Society of the U.S. wrote in a 2017 blog post. “The charges against the bison are trumped-up and best characterized as fake ecological news.”

“I’m very nervous about there being a perpetual dependency on this use of people having to go into the park and shoot,” the Sierra Club’s Alicyn Gitlin told the Associated Press.

Pet Food Is Disappearing From Shelves | Best Life

Add another product to the list: pet food is the latest household staple has begun disappearing from shelves due to a sudden shortage.

There is currently a pet food shortage across the U.S. According to comments made during Global Pet Expo (GPE) Digital Access 2021 by Steve King, president and CEO of the American Pet Products Association (APPA), the pandemic has led to pet food and pet product supply issues and transportation issues, Supermarket News reports.

King noted that a 9.7 percent increase in pet food sales between 2019 and 2020 had put a strain on supply chains that are already struggling with a shortage of raw materials needed to make the products. Worker safety protocols at production facilities and labor shortages are also playing a factor in the supply chain hiccup.

Canned wet food for pets may be especially hard to come by, one CEO says.

Doomed Indonesian sub may have been hit by powerful underwater wave: report | Fox News

Indonesian officials working to determine how a military submarine with 53 crew members sunk earlier this month during a training exercise said the vessel may have been hit by an internal solitary wave in the treacherous waters off Bali.

Australia’s ABC.net.au reported that such waves are invisible but have the strength to drag a submarine down to dangerous depths. The report said that there have been several theories, but evidence seems to point to a wave that would not be evident on the surface of the water.

The report said Indonesian naval officials consulted satellite images from the region and determined that these kind of massive waves were in the area at the time of the sinking.

Rear Adm. Iwan Isnurwanto, the commander of the Indonesian Navy Command and Staff School, told the station that the wave may have “moved up from the bottom to the north, and there’s a trench between two mountains.”
