Pence claims Biden broke Trump administration’s deal with Taliban

Former Vice President Mike Pence claimed Tuesday that President Joe Biden reneged on the cease-fire deal his predecessor, former President Donald Trump, agreed with the Taliban in February 2020, setting the stage for what Pence called “a foreign-policy humiliation unlike anything our country has endured since the Iran hostage crisis.”

In a Wall Street Journal op-ed, Pence claimed that by the time the 45th president left office, “the Afghan government and the Taliban each controlled their respective territories, neither was mounting major offensives, and America had only 2,500 U.S. troops in the country—the smallest military presence since the war began in 2001.”

The key provisions of the agreement — described as “foolhardy” in the pages of The Post by Rich Lowry last month — included the US withdrawing all combat forces from Afghanistan by May of this year, the Taliban denying safe haven to terror groups, the release of up to 5,000 Taliban prisoners in exchange for 1,000 Afghan security forces held by the Taliban, and the beginning of comprehensive peace negotiations between the Taliban and the Western-backed Afghan government.

In Tuesday’s op-ed, Pence credited the agreement with the fact that the US “has not suffered a single combat casualty” in Afghanistan in 18 months.

Early Voting in Newsom Recall Election Underway – YouTube

The 2021 California gubernatorial recall election is an upcoming special election on whether to recall Governor Gavin Newsom, scheduled to be held in-person on September 14, 2021, with every voter set to receive a ballot at their address for the option to vote by mail, beginning August 16, 2021.[1][2]

Before this election, the only other gubernatorial recall attempt in California that qualified for a general vote happened in 2003, which resulted in Gray Davis being replaced by Arnold Schwarzenegger.[3][4] The recall election will be the fourth gubernatorial recall election ever held in the United States.[5] This election is the result of one of at least 54 attempts in California’s history to remove an elected governor from office and one of six efforts to remove Newsom.[3][4] Every California governor since 1960 has faced some form of recall attempt.[6]

New Zealand in lockdown over first COVID infection in 6 months

Jacinda Ardern announced that all New Zealand will be in the toughest, level-four lockdown for at least three days.

New Zealand was ordered into a strict nationwide lockdown Tuesday — after just one COVID-19 case was detected.

It was the first locally transmitted infection in the community in six months.

“The best thing we can do to get out of this as quickly as we can is to go hard,” Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said in a televised national address.

“We have seen what can happen elsewhere if we fail to get on top of it. We only get one chance,” she insisted.

Ardern announced that all New Zealand will be in the toughest, level-four lockdown for at least three days from Wednesday, with schools, offices and businesses closed and only essential services operational.

The biggest city, Auckland — where the unidentified 58-year-old man tested positive — would have a longer, seven-day lockdown, as would Coromandel, a coastal town where the infected person spent time.

Bachelor in Paradise season premiere recap: amazing, exciting, scary | EW.com

Season 7 of ‘Bachelor in Paradise’ kicks off with guest host David Spade, a bunch of randy singles, and the most night-one make-out sessions in the show’s history.

Hello again, rose lovers! In most parts of our country, the vision of a pandemic-free summer never quite materialized. (Get vaccinated, FFS!) But at least there’s one part of the world where randy, attractive singles can throw caution, dignity, and common sense to the wind: Bachelor in Paradise, that little stretch of beach where tiny crabs run free and producers reserve the right to portray contestants in ways that “may be embarrassing, unfavorable, humiliating, and/or derogatory, and/or may portray him or her in a false light.”

Chris Cuomo breaks silence on brother Andrew’s scandal

Chris Cuomo on Monday night finally broke his on-air silence about his brother’s sexual harassment scandal and subequent resignation — claiming network rules prevented him from covering the groundbreaking news.

“I never covered my brother’s troubles because I obviously have conflict, and there are rules at CNN about that,” Cuomo said at the end of his 9 p.m. show.

“My position has never changed. I never misled anyone about the information I was delivering or not delivering on this program.”

The CNN host’s comments come after he spent the last week on vacation as his brother, Gov. Andrew Cuomo, announced his resignation following a damning official report by state Attorney General Letitia James that concluded he sexually harassed several women.

Chris Cuomo had faced scrutiny for failing to address the governor’s spiraling scandal and for his role advising his brother after the sexual harassment claims surfaced earlier this year.

On Monday night, he downplayed the conversations he had with his sibling during that time as simply brotherly advice.

Protest outside White House as Taliban seizes Afghan cities | wusa9.com

5,000 troops are being sent to Afghanistan to evacuate U.S. Diplomats and Afghan allies.

WASHINGTON — People with ties to Afghanistan are pleading to President Joe Biden to step in and help as hundreds of people protested Saturday afternoon outside the White House.

The protest was hours after President Biden authorized an additional 1,000 U.S. troops for deployment to Afghanistan, raising to roughly 5,000 the number of U.S. troops to evacuate U.S. diplomats and Afghan allies.

“We want Mr. President to hear and to act immediately, we want him to act now because Afghanistan is in a tragedy and we want him to stop the Taliban,” Azahullah Zalmay said.

Zalmay lives in Northern Virginia but his home country is Afghanistan.

He said it’s been hard to watch what’s happening from 7,000 miles away.

“To be honest I am dying,” Zalmay said. “Since last night I haven’t slept yet. I couldn’t sleep. It’s a tragedy for my people. I can’t sleep.”

Biden restates commitment to Afghan drawdown amid Taliban offensive – POLITICO

President Joe Biden showed no sign of backing away from his decision to withdraw all troops and a significant portion of the diplomatic corps from Afghanistan, restating his determination to leave the country in a statement released Saturday.

Biden authorized the deployment of some 5,000 U.S. troops to ensure “an orderly and safe” drawdown of U.S. and allied personnel in Afghanistan, which came after reports of the evacuation of U.S. Embassy staff in Kabul to the international airport as the Taliban rapidly close in on the capital.

Independent candidate for Pittsburgh mayor withdraws from race

PITTSBURGH —Independent candidate for Pittsburgh mayor Marlin Woods announced his withdrawal from the ballot Saturday.

Campaign officials said the withdrawal was due to “petition challenges” and logistics.

“…regrettably our petitions were challenged by a few Democratic voters on August 9th, 2021. The law requires my campaign to present each person we consider a fixable challenge at a hearing this Monday, August 16th, 2021. Unfortunately, this requirement is logistically impossible to achieve in such a short period of time. As such, I have no other option than to withdraw from this year’s race,” said the campaign in a release.

Woods is a motivational speaker and business consultant who’s also worked as a minister.

“I can promise you have not heard the last from me,” wrote Woods. “I will continue to advance my positive message and respond to opportunities to provide leadership where and when appropriate in the next four years. Stay tuned; we’re just getting started.”

Jeannette-based gun marketplace website sues Facebook, Instagram over removal | TribLIVE.com

The owner of a Jeannette-based weapons marketing internet site contends he and his company were improperly removed from two social media platforms and suggested his conservative, pro-gun politics were the cause, according to a lawsuit filed this week in Westmoreland County.

Armslist LLC and owner Jonathan Gibbon of Jeannette said in January 2020 both Facebook and Instagram closed off access to and removed his private and business accounts without explanation.

According to the lawsuit, Armslist and Gibbon contend there was no basis for those actions and no policies of Facebook or Instagram were violated.

“Armslist doesn’t sell or market guns. It’s a site that is similar to Craigslist, and it drives traffic to its site by making posts on social media. To do that, they make posts supporting the Second Amendment,” said Jay Carson, Armslist’s Cleveland-based attorney.

Gibbon, a lawyer from Jeannette, has owned Armslist since its inception in 2007. He, along with one of his employees, filed the lawsuit that demands Facebook and Instagram restore their accounts. No monetary damages are being sought in the lawsuit.

Neither Facebook nor Instagram responded to requests for comment.

9 Dems threaten mutiny over Pelosi’s budget plan – POLITICO

A group of nine moderates is threatening to withhold their votes from Democrats’ $3.5 trillion budget resolution later this month, endangering Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s two-track plan to push both a massive infrastructure bill and social spending agenda through the House in the coming weeks.

That missive — which was made public Friday — quickly escalated tensions across the Democratic caucus, with anxieties already running high about how the tightly divided House will be able to muscle through both of President Joe Biden’s priorities in short order.

Westmoreland County woman accused of embezzling $340K from credit union, setting fire as cover up

A Westmoreland County woman has been indicted on charges that she embezzled $340,000 from Valley 1st Community Credit Union, where she worked as a branch manager, and later setting a fire in the credit union’s safe to try to cover up the theft.

Patty Lynn Mavrakis, 63, faces charges of embezzlement from a federal credit union, wire fraud and use of fire to commit a federal felony.

Prosecutors said Mavrakis embezzled the money in September 2016 and later set the fire, after which she allegedly claimed the fire destroyed the missing currency.

She also allegedly made an insurance claim on behalf of the credit union for the missing currency.

If convicted, Mavrakis could face a maximum total sentence of 60 years in prison, a fine of $1.5 million or both.

Five people dead after mass shooting in England

Five people, including a young child, were killed in a mass shooting in southwest England on Thursday, authorities said.

The shooter, who was also killed, kicked in the door of a home then gunned down a woman and her young daughter before randomly opening fire on other people in the streets of Plymouth, reports and officials said.

Two women and two men were found dead at the scene as well as another man believed to be the gunman, Devon & Cornwall police said in a statement. A woman was transported to a local hospital and later died, police said.

More people were being treated for their injuries in the hospital, a local member of Parliament said.

“We should prepare ourselves for more grim news tomorrow,” MP Luke Pollard said on Twitter. “Please look out for one another.”

Pollard said he was “utterly devastated” that one of those killed was a child under 10 years old.

Demonstration planned as parents push back against Pittsburgh Public Schools’ delayed start

A demonstration is planned Wednesday evening to protest against Pittsburgh Public Schools’ announcement that the academic year may be delayed by two weeks due to transportation issues.

The protest was organized by city school parents and is set for 6 p.m. outside the school board’s headquarters on South Bellefield Avenue in Oakland.

District officials Tuesday said they wanted to delay the start of the year due to a shortage of about 6,000 bus seats for students entering the 2021-22 school year. In order to add enough bus drivers to make close the gap, the first day of school is set to be pushed back from Aug. 25 to Sept. 8.

Teen boy duct-taped after trying to kick out plane’s window

Flight attendants have once again resorted to duct tape to restrain an unruly passenger — this time tying down a 13-year-old boy on an American Airlines flight as another family member punched a window, according to the airline.

The teen threw a tantrum and fought with his mother aboard an American Airlines flight from Maui to Los Angeles on Tuesday, CBS Los Angeles reported.

The boy acted up on the Airbus A321 about an hour into the flight, which took off at 12:44 p.m., according to the outlet and flight-tracking sites.

Video posted by the station shows masked passengers helping the crew restrain the wild adolescent. One flight attendant is seen scurrying up the aisle with a roll of gray duct tape.

The flight diverted to Honolulu, where the boy was taken into custody, according to CBS LA. No one was reported injured.

Duct tape also was used in two other recent airline incidents, including passenger Maxwell Berry, 22, being tied to the back of a seat on a Frontier flight from Philadelphia to Miami on Aug. 3.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo tendered his resignation — and let’s all wish Kathy Hochul well

It’s over. Faced with universal demands for him to step down and clearly unable to govern, Gov. Andrew Cuomo did the only sane thing: He tendered his resignation.

It was only a matter of time, of course. No one wanted him around anymore. If he hadn’t quit voluntarily, the Legislature would’ve booted him.

Opposition to his continued tenure mushroomed not only because of the charges of sexual misconduct from numerous women, devastating as they were, or his deadly nursing home scandal — his efforts to damn his accusers and cover up the care home facts were added outrages.

No, animosity had grown, as John Podhoretz noted in The Post, even before his scandals broke. He’d racked up a lifetime of enemies, mostly through thuggishness, an attitude that also backfired on the last New York governor to step down, Eliot Spitzer.

Cuomo’s departure leaves the state in the hands of his lieutenant governor, Kathy Hochul, who’s largely unknown — and untested — at a key moment for the state. When then-Lt. Gov. David Paterson took over from Spitzer in 2008, following a prostitution scandal, he’d served in the state Senate for decades, including as minority leader.

Hochul will preside over a state facing soaring crime and a post-COVID economy struggling to recover. Enormous fiscal challenges lie just down the road, and next year’s race for governor will only add complexity.

Worst, she’ll have to hold back radicalized lawmakers whose agenda — yet more anti-cop measures, raising taxes further and yet more irresponsible state spending and bank-busting programs like single-payer health care — would be disastrous.

Her first order of business, of course: Clean house at the Capitol’s Second Floor, removing Cuomo loyalists, especially those linked to his numerous scandals.

Paterson managed to see the state through, despite the rocky economy at the time; Hochul might face an even heavier lift. New Yorkers should wish her well.

Hundreds of residents told to evacuate after Miami condo building deemed unsafe

Since the partial collapse of Champlain Towers South in Surfside, Florida, which left 98 people dead, officials have sought to review the structural integrity of buildings.

Hundreds of Miami residents were forced from their eight-story condo building on Monday night after city officials determined the structure was unsafe.

The 137-unit building at 5050 NW Seventh St. was placed under an evacuation order, according to Miami building director Asael “Ace” Marrero, NBC Miami reported.

“We obviously don’t feel that it’s safe,” he told the news station. “Structural integrity has been degraded by the contractor proceeding with the repairs that they were not authorized to do.”

Senate to pass bipartisan infrastructure bill

The bill’s Senate passage will be a major step for Democrats as they try to push through a sprawling economic agenda.

 POINTS
  • The Senate is expected to pass a $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill Tuesday as Democrats move ahead with their economic agenda.
  • The chamber will next move to pass a budget resolution that would allow Democrats to approve their $3.5 trillion spending bill without Republican votes.
  • The House is waiting to take up either plan until the Senate approves both.

Private jets and no masks — how Obama’s party was height of elite hypocrisy

For someone who prides himself on optics, Barack Obama just gave us quite an ugly spectacle.

As the rest of America struggles with uncertain employment status and school reopenings, shifting mask mandates, anxiety over vaccinations and variants, the health of the economy and the citizenry at large, Obama had to go and throw himself a huge, epic, three-day birthday bash on Martha’s Vineyard.

You would think a former president — one who clearly considers himself more intelligent and sensitive than most — would exercise some restraint.

Or at least understand that this was a supremely bad look.

Here was our climate czar, John Kerry, flying in private. His mode of travel was preferred by a host of left-leaning eco-warrior celebs, all Obama’s “close friends,” of course, descending on an already understaffed and emotionally depleted Vineyard.

“His birthday party is insane,” one of Obama’s caterers told The Post last week. “What is he thinking?”

Clearly, Obama thought to do whatever he damn well pleased — even after such backlash caused him to effectively cancel his party.

Gregg Jarrett on the secret JFK assassination files: What is the government hiding? | Fox News

Decades after the popular president was gunned down in broad daylight, many people are still asking ‘who really killed Kennedy’ — and, why won’t the government release all the assassination records?

Many unanswered questions remain about the assassination of President John F. Kennedy on November 22nd, 1963. In the decades since, conspiracy theories and speculation of all kinds have surfaced, adding to the swell of allure surrounding the single event that changed – and continues to mystify – the country.

Now, nearly 60 years later, Fox Nation is revisiting that tragic day in Dallas, as calls grow for the government to release all of their secret files.

Fox News legal analyst and host of ‘JFK: The Conspiracy Continues’ Gregg Jarrett joined ‘Fox & Friends’ Monday, telling co-host Will Cain that the government is to blame for the skepticism — asserting that most Americans don’t believe the beloved 35th U.S. president was shot and killed by a lone gunman.

“The government, to this day, continues to hide thousands of assassination records,” said Jarrett, who noted that, by law, President Biden has until October 26th of this year to release those documents.

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

Cain asked the legal analyst why the FBI and the CIA have been actively working to keep these files secret, to which Jarrett replied by taking jabs at both organizations:

“The fact that they have worked sedulously and secretly behind the scenes to stop these documents from being released to the American public invites the question, what are they hiding?”

“Americans are entitled to the truth of this,” asserted Jarrett.

The truth, though, has perplexed Americans from the very beginning.
