If Russia invades Ukraine, there will be no Nord Stream 2, Biden says | Reuters

WASHINGTON, Feb 7 (Reuters) – U.S. President Joe Biden on Monday warned that if Russia invades Ukraine, there would be no Nord Stream 2, but did not specify how he would go about ensuring the controversial pipeline would not be used.

Speaking at a joint news conference with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Biden said, “If Russia invades… again, then there will be longer Nord Stream 2. We will bring an end to it.”

When asked how he would do that, he responded, “I promise you we will be able to do it.”

Europe’s most divisive energy project, Nord Stream 2 is designed by Russian energy giant Gazprom to double the amount of gas flowing from Russia straight to Germany, bypassing traditional transit nation Ukraine.

Pittsburgh ranked as top city for football fans | TribLIVE.com

For those who bleed Black and Gold, the idea that Pittsburgh is the best city for football fans is just about the least shocking notion ever.

But WalletHub, a personal financial website, went ahead and just made it official — again.

For the fourth year in a row, Pittsburgh stood above all other cities as the single best place for a gridiron lover to be.

In their 2022 Best & Worst Cities for Football Fans, pinned to Sunday’s Super Bowl LVI, WalletHub broke 245 U.S. spots into three categories — large, midsize and small. A large city is one with more than 300,000 residents. For midsize cities, it’s from 100,000 to 300,000 residents and small is less than 100,000.

The site looked at 21 metrics to rank the cities, which each have at least one college or professional football team. They considered things such as number of teams, average ticket prices and fan friendliness. Each entry was graded on a 100-point scale, with 100 being the most favorable conditions for football fans.

McKeesport mayor declares state of emergency after fire destroys Public Works garage

The fire broke out just after 6:15 a.m.Sunday.

The mayor’s office said in a statement four large dump trucks equipped with snowplows, a street sweeper and a vactor truck for cleaning storm sewers were lost in the blaze — all vehicles vital to Public Works operations.

“I have to go up a hill, two hills so to speak just to get to my particular job as a caregiver so it’s going to be pretty dicey probably depending on what other bad weather comes in,” McKeesport resident Friday Schofield said.

Cherepko said the declaration allows the city to “work expeditiously toward solutions, as the Public Works Department tends to city services this winter.”

Hempfield supervisors OK plans for Smail Auto Group expansion on Route 30

Hempfield supervisors approved site plans for new Smail Ford and Lincoln dealerships, which ultimately will expand the auto group’s footprint along Route 30.

Two new buildings will be constructed on what is now a storage lot for the company, adjacent to Sheetz and across the street from Smail Honda.

“We’re going to build a new Ford and Lincoln store there,” general manager Mark Smail said.

The buildings are part of a multi-phase project that includes moving the company’s Kia dealership into the current Ford and Lincoln store near Eastgate Shopping Center, Smail said. Construction of the dealerships is expected to start in mid to late spring.

According to Smail, the facilities will feature showrooms and service centers, as well as two service drive-thru lanes at the Ford building and one at the Lincoln dealership.

Four or five electric car charging stations also will be included on the lot.

“It’s going to be better for our customers,” Smail said. “The service facility is going to be a bigger facility to service the Ford and Lincoln vehicles.”

Supervisors unanimously approved the site plans last week with contingencies.

Patrick Karnash, the township’s director of planning and zoning, said those contingencies include approvals from outside agencies, including the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and the Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County. A traffic impact study is planned.

Expansion of the Smail footprint along the stretch of Route 30 near Westmoreland Mall adds to its legacy that largely began in 1961, when the business had showrooms in Jeannette and on South Maple Avenue in Greensburg. The dealership later expanded to its current location in Hempfield.

Today, the dealership sells several brands, including Acura, Buick, Cadillac, GMC, Honda, Kia, Mazda and Mercedes-Benz. It also operates a body shop.

Plans for the multi-phase project will be released at a later date.

Westmoreland DA Nicole Ziccarelli seeks removal of 2 elected constables | TribLIVE.com

Westmoreland County District Attorney Nicole Ziccarelli is seeking to remove two elected constables from office, one in Arona and another in New Kensington.

Ziccarelli, a first-term Republican who took office in January after ousting Democrat John Peck — who served as the county’s top prosecutor for a quarter century — said the lawsuits were filed this week to ensure that elected officeholders are eligible to do so.

“The need to file such actions is rarely presented, and the filing of these complaints does not represent a new investigative focus for my office,” Ziccarelli said in a statement released Wednesday. “As with previous matters handled by this office, these investigations were prompted by outside complaints and investigated by the county detectives.”

According to the lawsuit against Constable Daniel Goodson of New Kensington, he is ineligible to serve because of prior felony convictions in Pennsylvania, Maryland and in federal court.

Goodson, a 48-year-old Democrat, defeated Republican Ron Balla by 54 votes in November to serve as constable in New Kensington’s 4th Ward.

According to court records, Goodson has criminal convictions that date to 1997 for crimes including retail theft and bad checks.

Goodson could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

Walter Geiger, 61, a Democrat, previously served as a constable in Arona and was reelected in November with 11 write-in votes. Ziccarelli claims Geiger has not lived in Arona since November 2018 but instead resides in North Huntingdon.

PITTSBURGH — The Pennsylvania Turnpike is beginning to notify E-ZPass customers who receive an excessive number of $10 V-tolls when their transponders fail to read properly.

The action comes after a Channel 11 News investigation exposed last September that customers were never notified about the charges, leaving many blindsided by big bills.

The turnpike announced the change with a notice posted on the Turnpike’s customer notification page for E-ZPass account holders. It said, “The PA Turnpike began sending notices to customers with excessive V-tolls in January 2022.”

19 people found frozen to death, sparking diplomatic row between Turkey and Greece – CNN

Istanbul, Turkey (CNN)The number of people found frozen to death in a small Turkish town near the border with Greece has risen to 19, officials said Thursday, a week after a rare winter storm blanketed both countries in snow.

A statement from the governor’s office in the Turkish city of Edirne said search and rescue activities were continuing in the region where the bodies were found.
Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu on Wednesday said those who died were part of a group of 22 migrants.
Soylu said the 19 people froze to death in Ipsala, a border town often used by those seeking to enter the European Union.
Where the migrants came from and why they were stranded in frigid conditions remains unclear, but Greece and Turkey have blamed each other for the tragedy.
Soylu alleged on Twitter that the group was turned away by Greek border officials and stripped of their shoes and clothing. He tweeted blurred images that appeared to show the dead bodies of at least eight individuals, partially clothed and lying in the mud.
Soylu called the Greek border patrol units thugs, and said the European Union was “remediless, weak and void of humane feelings.”

Groundhog Day: Punxsutawney Phil reveals prediction

Don’t put away your cold-weather gear just yet – Punxsutawney Phil just predicted six more weeks of winter.

The famous prognosticating rodent “saw” his shadow early Wednesday during the annual Groundhog Day ceremony at Gobbler’s Knob in western Pennsylvania, signaling that Old Man Winter isn’t clearing out anytime soon.

Phil’s loyal fans returned to the rural site after pandemic concerns forced organizers to livestream the annual event last year – during which he called for six more weeks of Old Man Winter.

The annual ritual in Pennsylvania dates back to 1887, according to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club. The tradition grew out of the Feb. 2 holiday of Candlemas in Europe, where Christians would take candles to a church to have them blessed.

Water pours out of Pittsburgh parking garage

PITTSBURGH —A large water pipe apparently burst in a Downtown Pittsburgh structure. It was around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday that the pipe burst, sending water into the Stanwix Street Garage on the 600 block of Stanwix Street.

A Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 photojournalist saw water pouring down to the bottom of the garage.

The owner of the Avis Car Rental Store in the adjacent building said his store ended up being flooded.

“It sounded like a part of the building collapsed just a little bit,” said Alan Corrado. “I didn’t know if it was the apartment above me. But apparently, it was just the sound from the water pipe breaking that happened one or two floors below me on the 11th or 12th floor.”

Corrado said he doesn’t know if he’ll be able to open his business today because of the flooding.

“The View” co-host Whoopi Goldberg has been suspended following her controversial remarks about the Holocaust.

“Effective immediately, I am suspending Whoopi Goldberg for two weeks for her wrong and hurtful comments,” ABC News president Kim Godwin said in a statement Tuesday evening. “While Whoopi has apologized, I’ve asked her to take time to reflect and learn about the impact of her comments.”

“The entire ABC News organization stands in solidarity with our Jewish colleagues, friends and communities,” Godwin added.

ADL, JEWISH GROUPS CONDEMN WHOOPI GOLDBERG’S HOLOCAUST COMMENTS, ACCUSE HER OF MINIMIZING JEWISH SUFFERING

Goldberg went viral on Monday when she argued that the Holocaust “isn’t about race,” stunning her colleagues at the table.

“What is it about?” co-host Joy Behar asked.

“It’s about man’s inhumanity to man, that’s what it’s about,” Goldberg said.

WHOOPI GOLDBERG ISSUES APOLOGY FOR HOLOCAUST COMMENTS: ‘I STAND CORRECTED’

“But it’s about a White supremacist going after Jews and Gypsies,” guest co-host Ana Navarro said as Goldberg attempted to speak over her.

“But these are two White groups of people,” Goldberg said as her colleagues disagreed.

Jewish groups condemned the comments, accusing her of minimizing Jewish suffering.

Goldberg attempted to explain her remarks during her appearance on “The Late Show.”

‘THE VIEW’ HOST WHOOPI GOLDBERG CLAIMS HOLOCAUST WASN’T ABOUT RACE: ‘THESE ARE TWO WHITE GROUPS’

“It upset a lot of people which was never, ever, ever, ever my intention… I thought we were having a discussion,” Goldberg told Stephen Colbert. “I think of race as being something that I can see… “You couldn’t tell who was Jewish. They had to delve deeply to figure it out… My point is, they had to do the work.”

She also told Colbert, “I don’t want to fake apologize…I’m very upset that people misunderstood what I was saying.”
