Twitter disbands its Trust and Safety Council

Elon Musk, the new CEO, continues to shape the company toward what he has called his “free speech absolutist” ideals.

Twitter on Monday disbanded its Trust and Safety Council, a group of volunteers who offered the company outside expert advice about online safety, according to an email seen by NBC News.

“As Twitter moves into a new phase, we are reevaluating how best to bring external insights into our product and policy development work,” the company said in the email. “As part of this process, we have decided that the Trust and Safety Council is not the best structure to do this.”

Alex Holmes, who had been a member of the council, tweeted that the email came after the company canceled a meeting with the council.

Brittney Griner immediately shook hands with members of the crew returning her to the US, hostage affairs official says | CNN Politics

CNN —

The top US hostage affairs official on Sunday reflected on conducting the prisoner swap that led to Brittney Griner’s release, saying the WNBA star immediately thanked the crew returning her to the United States.

“When she finally got on to the US plane, I said, ‘Brittney, you must have been through a lot over the last 10 months. Here’s your seat. Please feel free to decompress. We’ll give you your space,’” Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs Roger Carstens told CNN’s Dana Bash on “State of the Union.”

“And she said, ‘Oh no. I’ve been in prison for 10 months now listening to Russian, I want to talk. But first of all, who are these guys?’ And she moved right past me and went to every member on that crew, looked them in the eyes, shook their hands and asked about them and got their names, making a personal connection with them. It was really amazing,” Carstens recalled. “And then later on, on an 18 hour flight, she probably spent 12 hours just talking and we talked about everything under the sun.”

Missed opportunities haunt Steelers in loss to Ravens 16 – 14

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mitch Trubisky was overly aggressive with the football, and he knew it. The Steelers lost rookie Kenny Pickett to concussion protocol in the first quarter, and when Trubisky entered the game, he repeatedly moved Pittsburgh deep into Baltimore territory. But three costly interceptions allowed the Ravens to secure a 16-14 win on Sunday.

It’s the second time this season that Pickett has been placed in the concussion protocol. He missed the second half of a win against Tampa Bay on Oct. 16. Trubisky came off the bench and helped Pickett capture his first win as a professional in that Week 6 game, but that wasn’t the case against the Ravens.

New eatery, Frankie’s on 2nd, to open Saturday in Leechburg

A new eatery is opening in an old dining spot familiar to many Leechburg residents. Frankie’s on 2nd will have a soft opening starting at 7 a.m. Saturday, serving breakfast in what was formerly Pappy’s restaurant and, before that, Bonello’s. It is located at 81-83 Second St.

New owner Frank Failla, 62, of Springdale Township and his sister, Tina Rafalowski, will share the cooking duties.

“I’m most excited about this new adventure for my brother,” Rafalowski said. “He’s the one who taught me to cook.”

Rafalowski of Bethel Park will make the trek to Leechburg on weekends to work in the kitchen.

“I would drive two hours for my brother,” she said.

The siblings grew up surrounded by the restaurant biz. She first learned how to make pizza from her older brother.

Their late father owned and operated the former Don Nicolas pizza shops, with locations in Baldwin Township, Dormont and Pittsburgh’s Overbrook neighborhood.

“That was during the 1980s, and I took over after my dad died,” said Failla, who also works full time in travel management.

What we know about the next Senate and the balance of power now that Georgia’s runoff is over

Despite the Georgia runoff results, a split Congress means both Democrats and Republicans will have trouble passing legislation in January.

Warnock winning also puts Democrats in a better position in the next Senate election when the map will favor Republicans, former President Barack Obama said during a campaign stop last week.

Schumer, whose caucus held onto all incumbent seats and picked up Pennsylvania, was gleeful during a Wednesday morning press conference as he cheered the new 51-49 majority. .

“It’s going to be a lot quicker, swifter and easier,” Schumer said, noting that this year marks the first time since 1934 that each Senate incumbent of the party in power won their race.

Researchers Explain Mysterious Structure Found on Beach After Hurricane

The long wood and metal object offers a glimpse at maritime history from the 1800s.

A piece of the past has returned to haunt a Florida beach after a mysterious object made of wood and metal emerged in the aftermath of Hurricane Nicole in November. Initial speculation suggested it might be part of an old pier or perhaps a shipwreck. Now researchers say it’s likely the remains of a cargo ship from the 1800s.

The debris attracted attention when beachgoers spotted it on Daytona Beach Shores. A team from the St. Augustine Lighthouse Archaeological Maritime Program (LAMP) investigated the remnants this week. “It would have likely sailed within sight of the coast and used lighthouses for navigation, though it was probably big enough to cross the Atlantic as well,” said LAMP archaeologist Chuck Meide in a Facebook statement on Tuesday.
