Tree of Life synagogue disputes Joe Biden’s claim he visited

President Biden on Thursday told Jewish leaders that he spent time at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh after the October 2018 mass murder of 11 people there — but the synagogue told The Post he never visited.

“I remember spending time at the, you know, going to the, you know, the Tree of Life synagogue, speaking with them,” Biden said in a 16-minute virtual address ahead of the Jewish holidays Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

Barb Feige, executive director of the Tree of Life, said that Biden did not visit the synagogue in the nearly three years since the anti-Semitic attack.

In a phone interview, Feige, executive director since July 2019, said firmly that “no” Biden didn’t visit, even before taking office when he had a lower public profile as a former vice president and then-Democratic presidential candidate.

Pittsburgh City Councilman Bobby Wilson says he was just there Friday and residents shared their concerns about the violence. He says he’s taking a multi-pronged approach to stop the shootings.

“Which is really trying to contact HUD (Department of Housing and Urban Development). I just had a meeting with them yesterday to see what can be done to increase safety, to really increase community input in these locations,” said Wilson.

Wilson is also working with local intervention groups to find solutions.

“I want to keep pointing back to if we follow the bullet that was in the guns of everyone that were there, what brought them to that moment?” said Wilson.

Wilson and Councilman Corey O’Connor believe putting more funding into community programs and prevention will help save lives.

“We see this with our young people that have bright futures that we want involved in our city, that they are going to be the future leaders of our city,” said O’Connor. “I think for us, it’s more the education to those individuals to say, ‘Look, there are great opportunities here. How can we help?’”

O’Connor says the Stop the Violence initiative alone receives around $3 million in funding. The council just introduced new grants to distribute in the near future.

“If you have organizations that are working within the community as well as with our leaders down at city government to try to get to the neighborhood and to have people in the neighborhood to work with these young kids, to give them a sense of hope and that there’s other things to do out there,” said O’Connor.

O’Connor says community policing also makes a big difference. He says the police chief and officers go out in neighborhoods to connect with residents and participate in youth programs.

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — A gunman walked into a Miami Beach restaurant and fatally shot a tourist who was protecting his 1-year-old son.

Pittsburgh’s rising wave of gun violence | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

While much of the nation has experienced a dramatic increase in murders and other violent crimes, Pittsburgh has seen a 46% rise in shootings that left people injured and a similar percentage jump in homicides over the same time last year.

Perhaps the most alarming statistic to neighborhood activists is the number of young people dying from bullets: nearly one-third of the city’s 41 homicide victims were teens.

One 15-year-old boy was fatally shot on Brookline’s Creedmoor Avenue after several individuals chased him down, witnesses told reporters. Weeks earlier, a 17-year-old boy was followed from an Allentown convenience store and shot five times.

In April, a teenager was shot and killed in a Hill District apartment stairwell where a group of teens were “play fighting” with a gun, court records state. A 15-year-old was taken into custody in the shooting.

“It’s almost traumatizing to see so many young people dying prematurely, especially African-Americans,” said local anti-violence advocate the Rev. Glenn Grayson, who partners with the city on the Reach Initiative, a violence intervention program.

“We’re losing our future, the gifts and talents that could’ve been major contributions to society.”
