Tree of Life synagogue disputes Joe Biden’s claim he visited

President Biden on Thursday told Jewish leaders that he spent time at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh after the October 2018 mass murder of 11 people there — but the synagogue told The Post he never visited.

“I remember spending time at the, you know, going to the, you know, the Tree of Life synagogue, speaking with them,” Biden said in a 16-minute virtual address ahead of the Jewish holidays Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

Barb Feige, executive director of the Tree of Life, said that Biden did not visit the synagogue in the nearly three years since the anti-Semitic attack.

In a phone interview, Feige, executive director since July 2019, said firmly that “no” Biden didn’t visit, even before taking office when he had a lower public profile as a former vice president and then-Democratic presidential candidate.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto signed an executive order Tuesday allowing the possession and use of fentanyl test strips.

The City of Pittsburgh is adopting a policy to not arrest people who have or distribute fentanyl test strips for harm reduction purposes.

The Mayor’s Office says fentanyl test strips have been proven to prevent overdoses by allowing users to identify the presence of fentanyl in drugs.

Pointing to a recent study from the City of Pittsburgh Office of Community Health and Safety, the Mayor’s Office says there’s been an increased presence of fentanyl in drugs like heroin, cocaine and meth in the greater Pittsburgh area.

“While fentanyl has been present in the heroin supply for several years in this region, there are increasing reports of other, non-opioid drugs that have been cut with or contaminated by fentanyl,” the report says.

Port Authority announces staffing shortages impacting routes

According to the Port Authority, they are currently 100 drivers and 60 maintenance crew members short.

Port Authority spokesman Adam Brandolph says there were a larger number of issues Monday morning.

“We are aware that riders are being left at stops, buses aren’t showing up and they’re coming very late. Of course, if you’re somebody who’s relying on transit to get to work, to get to childcare, or to get to schools, that can be unacceptable, right?” said Laura Wiens, Pittsburghers for Public Transit executive director.

The Port Authority said the shortage could also impact Pittsburgh Public Schools students riding buses to school.

The Port Authority and a union for the drivers said there have been retirements and recruitment efforts have been difficult. They also said the extensive 10-week training course drivers have to go through is tougher to do with social distancing requirements.

The Port Authority said it is working on recruitment and is hosting a job fair Sept. 10 at the PA Career Link on Wood Street in downtown Pittsburgh at 10 a.m.

“We take this very seriously. When we put out a schedule, that is our contract with the public and when we can’t make that schedule, we really take that seriously. We ask for patience and some courtesy and even kindness for the operators, the drivers who are out there busting their butts today,” Port Authority spokesman Adam Brandolph said.

Pittsburgh Public Schools leaders said they’re aware of the Port Authority’s shortages, and for any student taking a port authority bus that’s late, they will not be penalized by the school.

Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 spoke with Felicia Snyder, a parent, who says she’s expecting some transportation issues given the delay in the school start time and staggering of schedules, but Snyder encourages patience among parents and the district.

“It’s just one of those things where we’re going to have to learn how to be kind. We’re going to have to learn how to be empathetic, and we’ll have to learn how to just be decent human beings because it’s the right thing to do,” Snyder said.

The full statement from Pittsburgh Public Schools is below:

“Our transportation department works very closely with Port Authority and stays up to date on the challenges they are also facing due to the driver shortage. As part of our planning, we consider the impact students’ commutes will have on bus capacities to alleviate overcrowding concerns. With many of our students getting to school in new ways and expecting that challenges with driver coverage will continue, school leaders will not penalize students who face challenges getting to school on time due to unexpected delays and inconsistent route coverage.”

Pittsburgh City Councilman Bobby Wilson says he was just there Friday and residents shared their concerns about the violence. He says he’s taking a multi-pronged approach to stop the shootings.

“Which is really trying to contact HUD (Department of Housing and Urban Development). I just had a meeting with them yesterday to see what can be done to increase safety, to really increase community input in these locations,” said Wilson.

Wilson is also working with local intervention groups to find solutions.

“I want to keep pointing back to if we follow the bullet that was in the guns of everyone that were there, what brought them to that moment?” said Wilson.

Wilson and Councilman Corey O’Connor believe putting more funding into community programs and prevention will help save lives.

“We see this with our young people that have bright futures that we want involved in our city, that they are going to be the future leaders of our city,” said O’Connor. “I think for us, it’s more the education to those individuals to say, ‘Look, there are great opportunities here. How can we help?’”

O’Connor says the Stop the Violence initiative alone receives around $3 million in funding. The council just introduced new grants to distribute in the near future.

“If you have organizations that are working within the community as well as with our leaders down at city government to try to get to the neighborhood and to have people in the neighborhood to work with these young kids, to give them a sense of hope and that there’s other things to do out there,” said O’Connor.

O’Connor says community policing also makes a big difference. He says the police chief and officers go out in neighborhoods to connect with residents and participate in youth programs.

Pittsburgh teachers ratify contract, greatly aiding PPS’s transportation plan | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

BY ANDREW GOLDSTEIN

The Pittsburgh Public Schools district’s plan to open for in-person instruction five days a week got a major boost Monday as members of the city’s teachers union ratified a contract that includes a provision giving district officials the power to adjust school start and end times.

The issue became a flashpoint in negotiations as the district sought the ability to modify the times so that school buses could run extra routes in the morning and afternoon — providing transportation to thousands of city students who may have not had a ride to school otherwise — but the union initially fought back against the idea.

“We’re hopeful that the district is able to get many students back in their seats,” Nina Esposito-Visgitis, president of the Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers, said in an interview at the union offices on the South Side. “This was a very difficult part of the contract, but we’re hoping to bring lots of students back, and that this will be something that we continue to work on together.”

The contract will now go before the school board Wednesday night for final approval.

Pittsburgh’s rising wave of gun violence | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

While much of the nation has experienced a dramatic increase in murders and other violent crimes, Pittsburgh has seen a 46% rise in shootings that left people injured and a similar percentage jump in homicides over the same time last year.

Perhaps the most alarming statistic to neighborhood activists is the number of young people dying from bullets: nearly one-third of the city’s 41 homicide victims were teens.

One 15-year-old boy was fatally shot on Brookline’s Creedmoor Avenue after several individuals chased him down, witnesses told reporters. Weeks earlier, a 17-year-old boy was followed from an Allentown convenience store and shot five times.

In April, a teenager was shot and killed in a Hill District apartment stairwell where a group of teens were “play fighting” with a gun, court records state. A 15-year-old was taken into custody in the shooting.

“It’s almost traumatizing to see so many young people dying prematurely, especially African-Americans,” said local anti-violence advocate the Rev. Glenn Grayson, who partners with the city on the Reach Initiative, a violence intervention program.

“We’re losing our future, the gifts and talents that could’ve been major contributions to society.”

Garfield homes left without power since Tuesday

Multiple homes in Pittsburgh’s Garfield neighborhood have been left without power since Tuesday, residents say.

On Sunday, Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 reporter Jim Madalinsky witnessed wires from a utility pole sitting on the ground near the sidewalk in Garfield Commons.

Resident Antoinette Coto says the power lines have been sitting there like this since Tuesday evening.

Four homes in Garfield Commons are still without power more than five days later –without any answers as to when power will be restored.

“To leave us basically stranded and abandoned is heartbreaking,” Coto said.

Coto says she’s not sure exactly what happened, but she noticed the utility pole was snapped Tuesday before any of the storms rolled through later in the week. She says a crew from Duquesne Light was out that day and replaced the pole but never got the electricity turned back on.

“All of our food in the refrigerator and freezer have to be discarded. Some people, one of my neighbors said they were staying at a hotel. People have been visiting friends and family,” said Coto.

Duquesne Light told Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 the loss of power is due to a wiring issue under the control of the property owners.

Duquesne Light’s full statement below:

“When we received the original inquiry, we immediately sent a troubleshooter to investigate at 242 Fern St, the address of Garfield Commons. What we’ve since learned is the outage you mentioned is due to a repair that has been on hold for wiring approval by the building owner.

The equipment in question is owned by the property and not DLC — once the wiring is complete and approved, we can finish the restoration. We’ve been in contact with the property’s maintenance department today, have provided our direct contact information, and assured them we’re available 24/7 to complete this work once approved.

We urge the residents of this building to contact their Property Owner/Manager about this issue. Again, we stress, the equipment in question is owned by the property owner, and we cannot restore power until their work is complete and we have approval.”

Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 has reached out to the property owners with no response.

Independent candidate for Pittsburgh mayor withdraws from race

PITTSBURGH —Independent candidate for Pittsburgh mayor Marlin Woods announced his withdrawal from the ballot Saturday.

Campaign officials said the withdrawal was due to “petition challenges” and logistics.

“…regrettably our petitions were challenged by a few Democratic voters on August 9th, 2021. The law requires my campaign to present each person we consider a fixable challenge at a hearing this Monday, August 16th, 2021. Unfortunately, this requirement is logistically impossible to achieve in such a short period of time. As such, I have no other option than to withdraw from this year’s race,” said the campaign in a release.

Woods is a motivational speaker and business consultant who’s also worked as a minister.

“I can promise you have not heard the last from me,” wrote Woods. “I will continue to advance my positive message and respond to opportunities to provide leadership where and when appropriate in the next four years. Stay tuned; we’re just getting started.”

Demonstration planned as parents push back against Pittsburgh Public Schools’ delayed start

A demonstration is planned Wednesday evening to protest against Pittsburgh Public Schools’ announcement that the academic year may be delayed by two weeks due to transportation issues.

The protest was organized by city school parents and is set for 6 p.m. outside the school board’s headquarters on South Bellefield Avenue in Oakland.

District officials Tuesday said they wanted to delay the start of the year due to a shortage of about 6,000 bus seats for students entering the 2021-22 school year. In order to add enough bus drivers to make close the gap, the first day of school is set to be pushed back from Aug. 25 to Sept. 8.
