4 mass shootings in 6 hours leave 39 wounded, 5 dead across US – ABC News

At least four major U.S. cities were reeling from an onslaught of mass shootings over the weekend that left at least 39 people wounded, five dead and police officials alarmed that the surge in gun violence is a prelude to a bloody summer as the nation emerges from the pandemic.

Police in Austin, Cleveland, Chicago and Savannah were all investigating on Sunday mass shootings that erupted over a six-hour streak that began around 9 p.m. on Friday and spilled over into Saturday morning.

“It’s very disturbing what we’re seeing across the country and the level of gun violence that we’re seeing across the country. It’s disturbing and it’s senseless,” Savannah Police Chief Roy Minter, Jr. said at a weekend news conference after one person was killed and eight others, including an 18-month-old baby and two teenagers, were wounded.

On Sunday morning, Savannah police were working to identify the suspect or suspects who rolled up in a dark-colored sedan and unleashed a barrage of gunfire around 9 p.m. Friday on a group of people standing in front of a home in a residential neighborhood of east Savannah. Minter identified a 20-year-old man killed in the ambush as Arthur Milton of Savannah.

He said two of the adults hit in the shooting were in critical condition. The baby and the two teenagers, ages 15 and 16, suffered non-life-threatening wounds.

Minton said investigators collected 60 shell casings from the shooting scene and added that three houses and several cars were damaged by gunfire.

The chief said the targeted home is the same one someone sprayed with bullets on Tuesday, a shooting that left no one injured.

“We don’t think it was a coincidence,” Minter said.

Roughly four hours after the Savannah shooting, gunfire erupted on a street in Austin’s downtown entertainment district, leaving 14 people wounded, two critically, police said.

One suspect was arrested and a second is being sought, said interim Police Chief Joseph Chacon.

Austin shooting: At least 13 people injured in a shooting downtown, authorities say – CNN

(CNN)At least 13 people were injured early Saturday morning in a shooting in downtown Austin, Texas, officials said.

Two of the people injured are in critical condition, Austin Interim Chief of Police Joseph Chacon said at a news briefing Saturday.
Six people were taken to a hospital by the Austin Police Department, and the Austin-Travis County EMS brought in four others for medical treatment, Chacon said. Three other victims brought themselves to the hospital.
One hospital received 11 of the victims for treatment while another person was transported to a different hospital. One person went to an urgent care facility with multiple gunshot wounds, Chacon said.
Police have a very general description of the suspect and the incident appears to be isolated to the area, but could not say for certain that there was no additional public danger because the suspect is not in custody, Chacon said.
Police are currently reviewing camera footage from multiple sources, including the Public Safety Camera System, police body cameras and business surveillance video to determine what happened.
Detectives from the Aggravated Assault, Homicide, Organized Crime and Gang units are involved in the investigation, police said. Investigators have not ruled out gang involvement, but say the motive and circumstances that led to the shooting are not clear at this time.
The FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force Team is also on scene, Chacon said.
Shortly after the shooting, the Austin Police Department had urged in a post on Twitter for people to stay away from the 6th Street downtown area.

(CNN)Two people are dead and at least eight have been injured after multiple shootings near the oceanfront in Virginia Beach, Virginia, police said Saturday.

Police discovered at least eight shooting victims at “the original crime scene” near 20th Street and Atlantic Avenue when they arrived shortly after 11 p.m. Friday night, Virginia Beach Police Chief Paul Neudigate told a press briefing.

3 killed, 2 hospitalized after argument at Jefferson Gun Outlet leads to shots fired

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting in Metairie at the Jefferson Gun Outlet.

According to Sheriff Joseph Lopinto, three people are dead and two people were taken to area hospitals and are considered to be stable.

At around 2:50 pm, Lopinto said deputies responded to the shooting at the Jefferson Gun Outlet in the 6700 block of Airline Drive.

Deputies found several victims suffering from gunshot wounds, according to Lopinto.

JPSO sources say that a man entered the gun outlet with a loaded gun unholstered.

Sources say that the man got into an argument with a clerk who told him he should not have a loaded gun until he got inside the range.

According to JPSO sources, shots were fired during the argument when at least two customers on the range engaged the man.

The man was shot, but also fired back at the two customers who were also injured, according to JPSO sources.

At this time, Lopinto said it appears a suspect shot two victims inside the location, then was engaged by the two customers and shot outside the location by multiple other individuals.

The suspect is one of the deceased on scene, according to Lopinto.

There is no additional information available at this time.

Crunching the data: Homicides, shootings on the rise in Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH — Damon Lincoln’s life was cut short. He died last December on his mother’s birthday, two days before Christmas.“A couple of masked men came with guns. Forced him inside. They started ransacking the house,” said Lincoln’s uncle, Greg Dearolf. It happened in Mount Oliver. Lincoln tried to help his mother when he was shot in the back. The family is hoping reward money will help someone come forward.

From October 2020 to January 2021, the Allegheny County Police Department investigated 37 shootings and 22 homicides. From October 2019 to January 2020, there were 26 shootings and 13 homicides.

In the City of Pittsburgh, shootings and homicides are rising significantly. This November was the worst month for homicides in the last two years.

Community groups are stepping up to help fight the violence.

“It’s not just a law enforcement issue. It’s not just an outreach issue. It’s a village issue, which is why we are working with MAD DADS South Pittsburgh Peace Makers,” said Rev. Cornell Jones.

The City of Pittsburgh Stop the Violence Initiative is a fairly new movement. Coordinator Jay Gilmer said there’s been success in preventing many community disputes that could have turned violent.

“I’m here to find opportunities for members of the community that want to be involved to play some role in reducing the conditions that make violence prevalent,” Gilmer said.

The group offers resources for victims of violence and has details on activities and initiatives to help people. Leaders say people are responding.

“I’m getting people that are saying, ‘Hey, I used to be a youth worker. It’s time for me to get back in the game.’ Now we are developing a movement, a stop the violence movement,” Jones said.

The STOP the Violence Office attempts to promote, assist and connect the anti-violence activities sponsored by the City of Pittsburgh with other governmental and private anti-violence activities and with citizens who want to eliminate violence. City sponsored activities include Group Violence Intervention (GVI), the Pittsburgh Police Community Engagement Unit, and Youth & Adult Diversion programs.  One of the principal tools of the Office is their monthly STOP the Violence newsletter highlighting the facts on violence in the City, featuring insights on City sponsored activities and community-based initiatives to prevent violence, and showing how YOU can get involved.

If anyone has any information about the shooting death of Damon Lincoln, they can call the Allegheny County police at 1-833-ALL-TIPS.

Las Vegas-based tour bus heading to the Grand Canyon rolled over in northwestern Arizona on Friday, killing one person and critically injuring two others, authorities said.

A spokeswoman for the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office said the cause of the Friday afternoon wreck was not yet known, but a fire official who responded said speed appeared to be a factor. No other vehicles were involved.

“It was a heavily damaged bus. He slid down the road quite a ways, so there was a lot of wreckage,” said Lake Mohave Ranchos Fire District Chief Tim Bonney. “Just to put it in perspective, on a scale of zero to 10, an eight.”

None of the passengers was ejected from the vehicle but they were all in shock, Bonney said.”

A lot of them were saying the bus driver was driving at a high rate of speed,” he said.

A photo from the sheriff’s office showed the bus on its side on a road that curves through Joshua trees with no snow or rain in the remote area.

(CNN)Two people are dead and a third was injured in Kenosha, Wisconsin, following a shooting late Tuesday night, police said.

The shooting happened amid the third night of protests over the police shooting of 29-year-old Jacob Blake on Sunday evening.
On Tuesday, officers responded to reports of multiple gunshot victims around 11:45 p.m., the Kenosha Police Department said in a news release early Wednesday.
The person injured was taken to the hospital with “serious, but non-life threatening injuries,” police said.
An investigation into the shooting is ongoing and the names and ages of the victims are still being determined, according to the release.
Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth told The New York Times his office is investigating whether the shooting resulted from a conflict between demonstrators and a group of men with weapons who were protecting businesses.
CNN has reached out to the Kenosha Police Department and the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office.
Protests in Kenosha have been ongoing since Blake’s shooting. Wisconsin’s governor declared a state of emergency Tuesday after cars and buildings were set ablaze and called in 250 members of the National Guard to assist. Blake remains in the hospital but his family says he is paralyzed from the waist down. A family attorney said it would take a “miracle” for Blake to ever walk again.
