Smugglers are sawing through new sections of US border wall – Americas – Stripes

SAN DIEGO — Smuggling gangs in Mexico have repeatedly sawed through new sections of President Donald Trump’s border wall in recent months by using commercially available power tools, opening gaps large enough for people and drug loads to pass through, according to U.S. agents and officials with knowledge of the damage.

The breaches have been made using a popular cordless household tool known as a reciprocating saw that retails at hardware stores for as little as $100. When fitted with specialized blades, the saws can slice through one of the barrier’s steel-and-concrete bollards in a matter of minutes, according to the agents, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the barrier-defeating techniques.

After cutting through the base of a single bollard, smugglers can push the steel out of the way, allowing an adult to fit through the gap. Because the bollards are so tall – and are attached only to a panel at the very top – their length makes them easier to push aside once they have been cut and are left dangling, according to engineers consulted by The Washington Post.

Hey, Wasn’t Jesus an immigrant? – Pittsburgh Current

By Jessica Semler

There’s a thought that keeps flashing through my mind when I pour through the news about reproductive health access, immigration, and government; do these folks realize that Jesus was an immigrant?

A pregnant woman in Texas lost 20 pounds in an immigration detention center, and her experience is not unique. ICE admitted that nearly 30 women have miscarried while in their custody in the past couple years. My knee jerk reaction is to ask what folks who are Christian, or identity as pro-life have to say about this. During my years at Planned Parenthood, I consistently found that the folks who are the most vocal against abortion care use religion as the driving reason for their fight. Whether it was folks yelling at women outside of clinics with posters and rosaries, or anti-choice legislators voting for abortion bans, it always came back to their religious beliefs.

This feels personal to me. I was raised Catholic, and my dad was the most religious person in my life. In his youth, he even attended the seminary for years and almost became a priest. He was the most compassionate, empathetic man in the world and he was vehemently pro-choice, pro-welfare, pro-gay rights. He held all of these beliefs and they were informed by his faith, not in spite of it.

RALLY CONCERNING ALLEGED IMMIGRATION CONDITIONS AND COUNTER-RALLY HELD AT IRMC PARK | WDAD AM1450 & 100.3FM

Friday evening, IRMC Park was divided in half as two peaceful demonstrations were held, with both sides of the same issue represented.

Last night, the rally “Do Not Look Away – Stand Up for Liberty” was held on the west side of North 7th Street, with supporters of this rally protesting the perceived ill conditions of immigrants and asylum seekers at the US border, according to Lynne Alvine, the rally’s organizer.

While just across the street, a counter-rally was held by those who support Donald Trump’s policies.  Their organizer was Tammy Curry.

While both sides were very vocal, the rallies themselves were peaceful, and members of the Indiana Borough Police and Sheriff’s department were present to make sure that things were safe for everyone.

Mike Pence meets with migrants at detention facilities – CBS News

Pence spent hours touring Border Patrol facilities, including the tent city in Donna, just outside McAllen, Texas, where he and his entourage saw migrants sleeping on the floor. Five Republican senators were with him, but not a single Democrat accepted the invitation to come along.

Pence’s visit comes on the heels of a scathing report from the Office of Inspector General, where one manager called the situation at Border Patrol facilities “a ticking time bomb.” At least five migrant children have died in government custody since September.

ICE deportation raids set to begin Sunday after Trump delay, report says | Fox News

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents are preparing to conduct raids beginning Sunday to arrest thousands of illegal immigrants across the U.S. just weeks after President Trump announced that he was delaying the operation.

The ICE agents will target at least 2,000 immigrants whose deportations have already been ordered, a New York Times report said, citing one former and two current Department of Homeland Security officials.

Asked for comment, an ICE spokesman would not offer specific details, citing “law-enforcement sensitivities and the safety and security of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement personnel.”

AOC says migrants forced to drink toilet water after tense border visit

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez claims Border Patrol agents are forcing migrants to drink out of toilets and live under other extreme conditions — while the officers sit back and laugh.

“I see why CBP officers were being so physically &sexually threatening towards me,” the congresswoman tweeted Monday after leaving a US Customs and Border Protection facility in Texas.

“Officers were keeping women in cells w/ no water & had told them to drink out of the toilets,” she said. “This was them on their GOOD behavior in front of members of Congress.”

The New York lawmaker was visiting a number of migrant detention centers scattered along the southern border on Monday with other congressional Democrats following reports of terrible conditions and repeated sexual assaults.
