A Surge in Hospitalized Young Children Infected With the Coronavirus – The New York Times

The number of hospitalized young children infected with the coronavirus rose precipitously last week to the highest levels since the beginning of the pandemic, according to data released on Friday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The increase was observed in children who were 4 and younger, who are not eligible for vaccination, and the data included children who were admitted to hospitals for reasons other than Covid.

The rise may be partly explained by the surge of Omicron cases, which affects all populations, and the spread of other respiratory infections.

But the data do not show a similar steep rise in coronavirus infections among hospitalized children of other ages, and federal health officials were considering the possibility that Omicron may not be as mild in young children as it is older children.

Children infected with the variant are still at much less risk of becoming severely ill compared with adults, and even young children seem less likely to need ventilators than those admitted during previous surges, doctors said.

“We have not yet seen a signal that there is any increased severity in this age demographic,” Dr. Rochelle Walensky, the C.D.C.’s director, told reporters at a news briefing on Friday.

More than four in 100,000 children ages 4 and younger admitted to hospitals were infected with the coronavirus as of Jan. 1 — double the rate reported a month ago and about three times the rate this time last year.

By contrast, the rate of hospitalized 5- to 11-year-olds with Covid was 0.6 per 100,000, roughly the same figure reported over past many months.

Dr. Walensky noted that only 16 percent of children from 5 to 11 had been fully vaccinated, and she urged everyone who was eligible for vaccines and boosters to receive them as soon as possible.

Chicago parents sue teachers union over canceled classes

A group of Chicago parents is suing the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) after teachers refused to return to in-person instruction due to COVID-19 concerns and school officials canceled classes entirely.

Attorneys at the Liberty Justice Center, representing a group of Chicago parents, filed a lawsuit Thursday night to end the union’s “illegal strike.”

Seventy-three percent of teachers in the union voted on Tuesday not to return to the classroom, alleging the city has not done enough to ensure they are protected against the coronavirus as cases spike in the state.

Can the Steelers still make the playoffs?

The Steelers kept their postseason hopes alive by beating the Browns. Pittsburgh still has a chance at a wild-card berth in the AFC playoffs.

Here’s what needs to happen for Pittsburgh to earn a wild-card berth in the AFC playoffs.

  • The Steelers (8-7-1) must defeat the Ravens (8-8) in Baltimore on Sunday.
  • The Jacksonville Jaguars (2-14) must defeat the Indianapolis Colts (9-7) at home on Sunday.
  • The Las Vegas Raiders (9-7) vs. the Los Angeles Chargers (9-7) cannot end in a tie.

How likely is that scenario?

Pittsburgh’s chance of going to the playoffs is 8%, according to ESPN. Those are slim odds, but they’re actually improved from 4% before the Cleveland game.

While the Jaguars only have two wins this season, the Colts haven’t beaten them in Jacksonville since 2014.

The Ravens are still alive in the playoff race as well. Baltimore needs a win over Pittsburgh, combined with losses by the Chargers and the Colts, along with a Miami loss or tie.

The Steelers, Ravens, Colts, Raiders and Chargers are all chasing the AFC’s final two playoff berths.

Jan. 6 protester claims in federal lawsuit that D.C. police beat her | Just The News

Victoria White filed a federal lawsuit against the Washington, D.C., police department claiming assault, battery and excessive force after officers allegedly beat her in the West Terrace tunnel of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.White claims she was hit by officers about 40 times in the head and face over the course of four minutes.

The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia and initially sought $1 million in damages, The Epoch Times reports.

Her attorney Joseph McBride points to three hours of surveillance footage from Jan. 6 released last month that allegedly shows White was pushed into the tunnel after she told the crowd not to enter the Capitol. Video reportedly shows White being hit by officers with batons and fists about 40 times over four minutes.

Epoch reports that McBride said he believes a Metro D.C. police supervisor is the officer in a white shirt on video was particularly violent and targeted White’s head and face with a steel baton and punches. The officer is labeled in the lawsuit as Officer John Doe 1.

The lawsuit seeks damages from D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department and seven officers “with a dollar amount significantly higher than the preliminary ask of one million dollars,” McBride said. The suit alleges “unreasonable seizure/excessive force and violations of Due Process” and claims including negligence, assault, battery, and emotional distress.

Powerball numbers: Two winning tickets sold for $632 million jackpot – CBS News

One was purchased in Sacramento, California and the other in Wisconsin. It wasn’t clear whether each was bought by one person or more than one.

The lucky ticket holders will split the $632.6 million bonanza. Each ticket is worth $316.3 million if the proceeds are taken in annual annuities over 29 years, or $225.1 million if the winners opt to take their prize in an immediate lump sum. Both options are before taxes.

The numbers drawn Wednesday night were 6, 14, 25, 33 and 46, and the Powerball number was 17. The drawing’s Power Play multiplier was 2.

Lottery officials originally estimated the jackpot at $610 million but they said Wednesday it had jumped to $632.6 million because of “fast-growing sales across the country.”

In all, more than 3 million tickets won prizes ranging from $4 to $2 million. Among them: two Match 5 + Power Play tickets worth $2 million each and 12 Match 5 tickets worth $1 million apiece.

North Korea fires ballistic missile, in 1st test in 2 months | AP News

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea fired a ballistic missile into the sea on Wednesday, the U.S. military said, its first weapons launch in about two months and a signal it isn’t interested in rejoining denuclearization talks anytime soon and would rather focus on boosting its weapons arsenal.

The launch came after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un vowed to further strengthen his military capability — without disclosing any new policies toward the United States or South Korea — at a high-profile ruling party conference last week.

The U.S. Indo-Pacific Command said the ballistic missile launch “highlights the destabilizing impact of (North Korea’s) illicit weapons program” but didn’t pose an immediate threat to U.S. territory or its allies. It said in a statement that the U.S. commitment to the defense of its allies, South Korea and Japan, remains “ironclad.”

South Korea’s military said a suspected ballistic missile fired from North Korea’s mountainous northern Jagang province flew toward its eastern waters. Defense Minister Suh Wook said the launch is seen as part of North Korea’s military buildup, but that South Korea is analyzing whether it had any political intention.

In an emergency video conference, members of South Korea’s presidential national security team expressed concerns about the launch and said resuming talks with North Korea is important to resolve tensions, according to the presidential Blue House.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy flames shooting from the second story of the three-story row house.

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Sources tell Action News that 13 people are dead after a house fire in the Fairmount section of Philadelphia.

At least two others are injured.

There was no immediate word as to the ages of those who died. Neighbors say there were a number of children who lived inside the home.

Neighbor Bill Richards who lived on the block for 24 years says he heard a woman yell, “Oh my God! Oh my God!”

He then heard fire trucks and came outside.

“It’s very upsetting,” Richards said. “I just can’t wrap myself around it.”

Richards spoke about a young man he has watched grow up who lives in the building.

“It’s a great neighborhood – a varied neighborhood. There are houses that have single families, multi-families, there are apartments, a lot of renters but there are single families. I’ve been here for 24 years. I love the neighborhood,” Richards said.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the three people killed in Homewood South on Dec. 31 as Nandi Fitzgerald, 28, Denzel Nolan Jr., 13, and Tatiana Hill, 28.

Police are continuing to investigate. Details of any possible suspects have not been released.

Neighbors and community leaders, including Mayor-elect Ed Gainey met on Hamilton Avenue and Braddock Avenue to show their support for the victims’ families.

Antonio Brown’s NFL career took another bizarre turn on Sunday when the wide receiver walked away from his team’s game at MetLife Stadium.

With the Tampa Bay Buccaneers trailing the New York Jets 24-10 in the third quarter, Brown removed his uniform and pads before walking off the field shirtless. Brown tossed his gloves and shirt into the stands. He waved to fans as he jogged through the end zone and into the tunnel.

Beforehand, teammate Mike Evans appeared to try to calm down Brown, who had three catches for 26 yards in the game.

After Brown bailed on the Bucs, quarterback Tom Brady helped lead a comeback. Brady connected with Cyril Grayson for a 33-yard touchdown play with 15 seconds left to secure a 27-24 victory.

Why can’t we put a space station on the Moon? | Space

A space station on the moon could be very useful to provide future space missions with a stopping point between Earth and deeper space. Why haven’t we built one yet?

One reason we haven’t built a space station on the moon is that we don’t send people there very often. We have only managed to put astronauts on the moon six times so far. These moon landings took place in a three-year period between 1969 and 1972 and were part of a series of space missions called the Apollo missions.

The type of rocket used to get the astronauts to the moon was an extremely powerful one called a Saturn V, which is no longer produced. This means that, at the moment, we do not have a rocket powerful enough to get people to the moon – let alone build a space station there.

We are starting to build powerful rockets again. Space exploration company SpaceX is creating newer and bigger rockets which are capable of taking the weight of astronauts to the moon. NASA is also planning new missions to take astronauts to the moon.

However, there is a big difference between a short trip and building a space station on the moon, which is extremely difficult. One way to do it would be to build it in pieces on Earth, take the pieces to the moon and assemble them there. This would be like how the International Space Station was built: pieces were taken into space and then put together by astronauts aboard the space shuttle.

However, the International Space Station is only 250 miles (400 kilometers) from the surface of Earth. The moon is 230,000 miles (384,000 km). Each trip to the moon would take about three days and would require incredible amounts of fuel, potentially adding to climate problems on Earth.

A much better idea would be to build as much of the base as possible from materials found on the moon. Lunar concrete is being tested on Earth as a possible building material.

On Earth you would make concrete from gravel or sand, cement and water. We have none of those things on the moon, but what we do have is lunar dust and sulphur. These can be melted and mixed together. Once this mixture cools, it produces a solid material that is stronger than many materials we use on Earth.
