Westmoreland jury finds father not guilty for napping while small children roamed

A former Greensburg man was found not guilty Tuesday of three felony offenses in which he was accused of being asleep as his young children walked alone on city streets. Jurors deliberated more than four hours before it acquitted Antonio Partlow, 33, now of New Kensington, of three counts of child endangerment. Westmoreland County Common Pleas Court Judge Christopher Feliciani declared a mistrial on three misdemeanor charges of reckless endangerment after the jury reported it could not reach a verdict on those offenses.

The deadlocked jury reported it had one holdout in favor of a guilty verdict, that deliberations became heated and further discussion would not result in a unanimous decision.

Partlow had been in jail since late last week after he initially failed to appear in court for his trial. He was released from custody Tuesday night after the judge reinstated his $25,000 unsecured bond.

Turns out the real threat to ‘norms’ was the Clinton campaign

Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign allegedly paid an internet company to “infiltrate” servers in order to link former President Donald Trump to Russia in 2016.

From the perspective of several years ago, it’s the stuff of an implausible political thriller or a conspiratorial YouTube account. One presidential campaign spies on another as part of a broad effort to get government agencies to pick up the baton and launch a high-stakes investigation of the new president that hampers his first years in office and consumes massive public attention.

Where could such a thing happen? Maybe Brazil or Equatorial Guinea? Well, we now know it happened in these United States.

The latest from special counsel John Durham is that a tech executive connected to the Hillary Clinton campaign mined Internet contacts between Russia and the entities connected to Donald Trump in a search for material to try, as Durham put it in a court filing last week, to “establish ‘an inference’ and ‘narrative’ tying then-candidate Trump to Russia.”

Durham’s probe is a righteous effort to get to the bottom of a matter that deranged American politics for two solid years but has been derided or ignored by the mainstream press, with baleful consequences.

Russiagate did more than its share to undermine the norm that losing campaigns should accept the result of free-and-fair elections and to erode confidence in institutions at the highest levels of our government. One way to minimize the harm is to insist on accountability. The people who were most invested in Russiagate for the longest, though, are least interested in revisiting its origins, let alone in apologizing for their own credulousness or malice.

35-year-old woman stabbed to death in Manhattan apartment in seemingly random attack

A 35-year-old woman was stabbed to death in her downtown Manhattan apartment in what appeared to be a random attack.

According to prosecutors, when police officers responded to the scene, the defendant imitated a voice of woman when he was in the apartment and said they didn’t need police. He tried to escape through the fire escape but saw an officer on the roof above him and went back inside the apartment, the complaint states.

Once officers were able to breach the apartment, they found Lee in her bathroom with multiple stab wounds from her own kitchen knife, police said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect, identified by police as 25-year-old Assamad Nash, was found hiding under a bed, according to the criminal complaint, and was taken into custody.

The 43-year-old victim said she began looking for the AirTag after receiving notifications on her cell phone that one was tracking her location.

Police said they questioned Ronald Roessler, 57, about the incident after he was identified as the owner of the AirTag.

The victim had an active protection from abuse order against Roessler.

Police said Roessler denied involvement and said it was a mistake though a trooper said he saw Roessler delete an AirTag from his phone after he agreed to show the phone to the trooper.

COURTESY OF ALLEGHENY COUNTY JAIL
Allison Matthew

Allison Matthew stopped halfway through her court statement Monday, unable to continue because she was sobbing.

About a year earlier, Matthew had been drunk while driving a car that reached speeds of nearly 102 mph before crashing on Pittsburgh’s Saw Mill Run Boulevard, killing her cousin.

“I’ve not been able to understand how I let this happen. I will never forgive myself for that night,” Matthew said at a sentencing hearing before Allegheny County Common Pleas Judge Jill E. Rangos.

Rangos ordered Matthew to serve 6 to 12 months at Allegheny County Jail, followed by three years of probation during which she must complete 400 hours of community service.

2022 Super Bowl score: Matthew Stafford leads late comeback as Rams edge Bengals in Super Bowl LVI – CBSSports.com

With their backs against the wall late in the fourth quarter, the Los Angeles Rams turned to the connection that spearheaded their offensive attack all year. Matthew Stafford targeted Cooper Kupp six times on what eventually became the game-winning drive, which Kupp capped with a 1-yard touchdown to take a 23-20 lead over the Cincinnati Bengals and ultimately claim victory in Super Bowl LVI. Overcoming two Stafford interceptions and a controversial Bengals touchdown, the Rams became just the second team in NFL history to win a Lombardi Trophy in their home stadium.

By winning inside SoFi Stadium, Los Angeles captured the second Super Bowl in franchise history after taking Super Bowl XXXIV over the Tennessee Titans in 1999 when the team resided in St. Louis.

The Rams were led by an uneven but gutty effort from Stafford, who completed 26 of 40 passes for 283 yards with those two picks, and Kupp, who caught eight passes for 92 yards and two of those three scores en route to MVP honors. The third touchdown — and first of the game — went to Odell Beckham Jr., who left the contest in the second quarter due to a non-contact knee injury and never returned.

Greensburg Night Market plans expansion | TribLIVE.com

The Greensburg Night Market is getting bigger this year, both in size and in the number of vendors who set up shop during the event.

This year, the market will stretch three city blocks, running along South Pennsylvania Avenue from West Otterman to West Third streets. The event usually takes up one block.

In addition, the market will feature 80 vendors, double the number of vendors that participated in last year’s event.

“We’ve been wanting to shut down South Pennsylvania Avenue for an event for over six years,” said Jessica Hickey, founder of the Downtown Greensburg Project, which hosts the event. “After the growth of the Greensburg Night Market over the last three years, we knew that this was the event that could make it happen.”

Hickey first started hosting the markets in 2019. That year, three dates were hosted on Pennsylvania Avenue in conjunction with the Westmoreland Cultural Trust’s TGIS Concert Series and three at the Westmoreland Museum of American Art. In 2019, the market featured 28 vendors, taking up half a block.

The next year, the market stayed on Pennsylvania Avenue. Several precautions were taken in 2020 as the covid-19 pandemic spread across the region.

Last year, the market featured 40 vendors and attracted between 3,500 and 4,000 people attended.

According to Hickey, the Downtown Greensburg Project began talking with the city last year about a possible expansion, which will incorporate several businesses along the South Pennsylvania corridor.

U.S. COVID vaccine for children under 5 delayed by at least 2 months | Reuters

Feb 11 (Reuters) – A U.S. decision on Pfizer (PFE.N) and BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine for infants and children 6 months through 4 years of age has been postponed for at least two months after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said it needed more data.

The FDA had planned to decide on the vaccine based on early trial data as soon as next week with the government planning to roll it out on Feb. 21. It had asked Pfizer to speed up its application as the Omicron variant of the coronavirus caused a surge of infections, including among children.

On Friday, the agency said it had reviewed new trial information that arrived after Pfizer and BioNTech’s request for emergency authorization and decided it needed more data before weighing in on the authorization.

SUV crashes through wall at Oakmont Bakery

An SUV barreled through a wall of Oakmont Bakery early Saturday morning, sending workers inside scrambling.

Just after midnight, crews were assessing the damage from silver Ford, which hit the building right under a bakery sign on Sweet Street.

People were working inside at the time, making donuts. One employee, who was five feet from where the SUV came through, also said he feared a few of his coworkers died after they were covered by debris.

However, he was able to get them out, and said none of them were injured.

“I knew three of our guys were down where the debris came down,” Jared Glaser, a bakery employee, said. “So I just ran over started tearing it all out, screamed their names and they didn’t answer me. So I kind of turned into the Hulk. My adrenaline rush went through the roof.”

Dispatchers said crews took one person to the hospital. There was no word what caused the crash.

Judge orders truckers to go home and end protest after Ontario premier declares emergency

Ontario Premier Doug Ford declared a state of emergency on Friday and said he’ll use all government resources to end a two-week protest by Canadian truckers over Covid-19 rules. And hours later, a judge ordered protesters at the Ambassador Bridge over the U.S.-Canadian border to leave.

Ford said the trucker protest amounts to a “siege” of downtown Ottawa and the Ambassador Bridge, which connects Windsor and Detroit.

“It’s an illegal occupation,” Ford told reporters. “This is no longer a protest.”

After the judge’s order, police warned that anyone blocking streets or helping to block streets could be arrested. It was not immediately clear when or if law enforcement officers would be sent in to remove the demonstrators.

Chief Justice Geoffrey Morawetz of the Ontario Superior Court said during a virtual hearing that the order would be effective at 7 p.m. to give protesters time to leave.

His decision came after a 4 1/2-hour court hearing at which the city of Windsor and lawyers for auto parts makers argued that the blockade was causing undue economic harm for the city and region.

Supporters of the protesters, some of them truckers, argued that an order would disrupt their right to peacefully protest vaccine mandates that hinder their ability to earn a living.

One dead, nine officers injured in Phoenix shooting – CNN

(CNN)A woman was fatally shot and nine police officers were injured early Friday in a Phoenix suburb, police said.

The nine officers are among 15 law enforcement officers injured in separate shootings across the US in the last 24 hours, according to a CNN tally.
“Enough is enough!” National Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) President Patrick Yoes said in a statement, noting last year was one of the most dangerous for law enforcement since the FOP began keeping records.
In Buckeye, west of Phoenix, an officer responding to a report of a shooting was invited inside a home by a suspect who then “ambushed” the officer with gunfire while still outside the house about 2:15 a.m., according to Sgt. Andy Williams, a police spokesman.
The officer was struck multiple times but managed to retreat and call for backup, Williams said.
A man then came out of the home holding an infant and placed the baby on the ground before he was detained, according to Williams.
The suspect inside the home then opened fire on other officers — striking four of them — as they attempted to bring the infant to safety, Williams said.
Four other officers were struck by bullet ricochets or shrapnel, but stayed at the scene, according to Williams.
Williams initially described the woman as being “extremely critical” but later reported that she had died.
The man who carried out the infant was not part of the ambush, Williams said, adding the investigation is in its preliminary stages.

Biden and Putin will talk Saturday as US warns Americans to leave Ukraine in 48 hours over fears of Russian attack – CNNPolitics

(CNN)President Joe Biden plans to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday, a person familiar with the matter said, as the US warns Russia could attack Ukraine using bombs and missiles at any moment.

The high-stakes talks come at what US officials describe as a critical juncture in the ongoing crisis. A significant increase of Russian ground forces and military assets have surrounded Ukraine, and Putin could decide at any moment to activate them into a deadly invasion.
He hasn’t decided whether to act, the White House said Friday. But that has not stopped American officials from dramatically increasing their warnings an attack is now a “distinct possibility” and could occur swiftly.

Underwood’s daughter lives next door to where the fire destroyed a home, and made it out thanks in part to a few good Samaritans.
