Bills limiting LGBTQ instruction, trans athletes pass Pa. Senate

Pennsylvania’s GOP-controlled Senate approved legislation Wednesday that Republicans say will restrict sexually explicit content and classroom instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity in public schools, mirroring partisan fights playing out in statehouses around the country.

The bills passed nearly along party lines, and Democrats warned that Gov. Tom Wolf will veto them. They still require approval from the state House of Representatives.

One bill, which passed 29-21, would prohibit classroom instruction on gender identity and sexual orientation for pre-kindergarten through fifth grade students.

A second bill, which passed 30-20, would require educators to identify sexually explicit content in the curriculum, classroom materials and books. Educators would have to notify parents if a child’s coursework or a book they’d like to check out from a library contains explicit content, and parents could opt their children out of viewing the material.

Wolf’s office said he would veto “any legislation that discriminates against LGBTQIA+ Pennsylvanians.”

A third bill that would prohibit transgender girls and women from playing in youth and collegiate sports in a way that matches their gender was headed for a veto by the Democratic governor after passing the Senate on Wednesday.

Bills like the one on classroom instruction on gender identity and sexual orientation have cropped up in numerous states in recent months.

About $90,000 worth of raw fentanyl in powder form was confiscated from a Cambria County man Tuesday after an arrest in Ligonier Borough, according to authorities.

Cortez M. Haselrig, 25, who lives near Johnstown, is being held at Westmoreland County Prison on charges of drug possession, criminal use of a communication facility and resisting arrest. His bail was set at $500,000.

The arrest is connected to a four-month drug trafficking investigation spanning the two counties, authorities said.

Haselrig is the son of former Pittsburgh Steelers guard Carlton Haselrig, according to police sources. Carlton Haselrig died in 2020.

The major arrest was part of a joint investigation among state police, Westmoreland County detectives, the Department of Homeland Security and Ligonier Valley and Penn Township police, said District Attorney Nicole Ziccarelli and Trooper Steve Limani. The county was designated two years ago by federal authorities as a High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area, meaning more resources and investigative help has been directed locally.

Israeli Prime Minister Bennett announces retirement from politics, paving the way for Netanyahu’s return | Fox News

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, left, and Defense Minister Naftali Bennett, visit an Israeli army base in the Golan Heights, on the Israeli-Syrian border, Sunday, Nov. 24, 2019.

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett announced Wednesday that he was withdrawing from political life and that he would not take part in the country’s next national election, a move that could possibly ease the return of long-serving leader Benjamin Netanyahu, who was ousted from office a year ago.

Bennett’s statement to stand down, at least for now, comes just over a week after he informed the public that he could no longer hold together his fragile coalition, sending the country to the polls for the fifth time in less than four years. An election is likely to take place in late October or early November.

A poll taken by Israeli TV’s Channel 12 News immediately following Bennett’s announcement on Wednesday showed Netanyahu’s right-wing Likud party gaining at least 15 seats more than its closest rival and gaining enough support from other right-wing factions and those loyal to the former leader to form a government with a small majority.

Amtrak train derails in Missouri: Multiple people killed and at least 50 injured – CNN

(CNN)Three people are dead and at least 50 injured after an Amtrak train derailed Monday in Missouri, authorities said Monday evening.

Cpl. Justin Dunn, a spokesperson for Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop B, told reporters that two of the people who were killed were aboard the train while the third was in a dump truck that the train struck.
Authorities said the tragic incident happened at an uncontrolled intersection — without warning lights or motion gates — where a gravel road crossed the railroad tracks southwest of town.
Amtrak said the train collided with the dump truck at a public crossing near the city of Mendon at about 12:42 p.m. CT (1:42 p.m. ET).
Eight cars and two locomotives left the track “after striking a truck that was obstructing a public crossing near Mendon, Missouri,” company officials said in an updated statement. Dunn told reporters that seven cars had derailed.

San Antonio trailer deaths: 50 migrants believed dead after being found inside a semitruck, official says – CNN

San Antonio (CNN)Fifty migrants are believed to have died after they and others were found in sweltering conditions in a semitruck in San Antonio, a federal law enforcement official said Tuesday, in a scene the mayor called a “horrific human tragedy.”

The death toll, which the city’s fire chief gave Monday as 46, includes migrants from Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras, according to the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. Their discovery Monday comes as US federal authorities have launched an “unprecedented” operation to disrupt human smuggling networks amid an influx of migrants at the US-Mexico border.
“An alleged human smuggling event” was alerted by San Antonio police to the US Department of Homeland Security’s investigation unit, which is leading the probe, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesperson said Monday. The incident appears to be among the most deadly in recent years for migrants near the southern border.
Three people detained away from the trailer site are in police custody, though their connection to the situation is unclear, Police Chief Bill McManus said at a news conference Monday night.

COVID lawsuit: Man sues UPMC over test

A Monroeville man is suing UPMC after a misread COVID-19 test and a phone call that forced him to cancel his wedding.

Michael Martin says back in July of 2020, just days before he and his fiancée were set to be married, he didn’t feel well.

After going to UPMC Mercy South Side a test showed he had strep throat, but was later told he had COVID.

As a result Martin and his fiancée had to cancel their Aug. 1 wedding. Not long after, Martin learned that a physician assistant made an error with his test.

“I wasn’t positive,” Martin said. “It wasn’t a false negative. It wasn’t anything other than negligence on not doing what she was supposed to do on that computer.”

The couple eventually were able to get married.

UPMC Community Medicine Primary Care Partners of Monroeville, UPMC and the physician assistant who reported the positive test result are named in the lawsuit.

Pittsburgh Catholics say Supreme Court’s abortion decision marks a day of ‘great happiness’

Just hours after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the landmark Roe v. Wade case, Pittsburgh Catholics cheered the decision.

“Those of us who have worked and prayed to protect unborn children are profoundly grateful that the Supreme Court of the United States has determined that there is not a constitutional right for abortion,” Bishop David Zubik said in a statement Friday.

The 6-3 decision Friday to uphold a strict Mississippi state law reversed nearly 50 years of federal abortion protections. It came about two months after a draft of the opinion of overturning the case was released.

Friday’s news was hailed by area Catholic leaders and some parishioners, even though polls have shown that a majority of U.S. Catholics support abortion rights.

Afghanistan earthquake: Taliban struggle to respond amid international isolation – The Washington Post

GYAN, Afghanistan — As three helicopters touched down in this earthquake-ravaged district on Thursday, dozens began to gather, hoping they would receive desperately needed aid. Instead, a group of ministers from Kabul emerged from the aircraft.

“I pray to God to help injured people recover soon,” Mawlawi Sharafuddin Muslim, acting deputy minister for the disaster management, told the crowd. “The Islamic Emirate is committed to provide all-out support to you at this difficult time.”

A few hundred yards away, families were burying loved ones and digging out belongings from their destroyed homes by hand. Of the more than two dozen civilians interviewed by The Washington Post in the area where the officials touched down, no one reported receiving any aid beyond sweets and juice handed out by wealthy business executives.
