PITTSBURGH — A pizza shop worker was attacked with a ladle before a cash register was stolen early Wednesday morning in Pittsburgh’s Greenfield neighborhood.
The worker was locking up the Vocelli Pizza on Murray Avenue around 2:30 a.m. when two males approached him from behind and forced him back into the business, police said.
One of the males hit the victim over the head with a ladle before taking off with the entire cash register, police said.
No arrests have been made in the robbery.
The worker was not seriously hurt, police said.

The victim, identified as Michael Smith, of Pittsburgh, was shot multiple times, according to police.

Mark your calendars, the Beaver Moon eclipse is a must-see — and it’s the longest of the century!
On the morning of Friday, Nov. 19, the full Beaver Moon will take place in a 97%-total lunar eclipse, according to NASA, meaning that nearly all of the moon’s surface will be shrouded in the Earth’s shadow.
November 2021’s eclipse will be about three and a half hours long, stretching from 2:18 to 5:47 a.m. EST. The Beaver Moon eclipse will peak at 4:02 a.m. EST, NASA reports, and will be visible across North America.
This history-making, near-total lunar eclipse coincides with the full Beaver Moon, which will reach peak illumination at nearly the same moment as the eclipse’s height. But don’t worry — the moon will appear full from Thursday evening through Saturday morning, meaning you can catch an unencumbered glimpse of the full moon, too.
The Beaver Moon gets its name from beaver hunting season, which used to peak this time of year. Plus, beavers start retiring to their lodges for the winter around now, too. Other names for November’s full moon include the Digging Moon (from the Tlingit), the Whitefish Moon (from the Algonquin), and the Frost Moon (from the Cree and Assiniboine).

Jurors in the trial of Kyle Rittenhouse have asked the judge for extra copies of the jury instructions, specifically pages 1 through 6.
In this case, attorneys from both sides did arrive, until the clerk learned the simplicity of the question, according to the courtroom pool reporter. The matter was not seen on courtroom pool cameras.
The jury was provided 11 additional copies, according to the courtroom pool reporter.
Pages 2 through 3 of the jury instructions focus on the self-defense and provocation instructions. Page 4 of the jury instructions focuses on crimes requiring intent to kill. Pages 5 and 6 focus on the first count of first-degree reckless homicide for the fatal shooting of Joseph Rosenbaum.
Jurors began deliberating at 10:15 a.m. ET on Tuesday.

In 2014, attorney Daniel Muessig created an advertisement for his law practice and posted it on YouTube.
In the funny, over-the-top video that had more than 150,000 views, he urged people to hire him to represent them in court because, he said, “I think like a criminal.”
Now, seven years later, Muessig finds himself in the role of an actual criminal.
The 39-year-old pleaded guilty Tuesday to two felony counts in federal court in Pittsburgh — conspiracy to distribute marijuana and possession with intent to distribute marijuana.
The government said the amount of illegal drugs attributable to Muessig was between about 220 and 880 pounds. He faces prison time when he is sentenced by Senior U.S. District Judge Arthur J. Schwab in March.
Federal prosecutors said Muessig, along with another man, Wayne Barker, operated a drug stash house at a home on Covode Street in Pittsburgh’s Squirrel Hill.
Investigators with the Greater Pittsburgh Safe Streets task force, who had a wire tap and then set up surveillance at the house, saw people involved in the conspiracy carrying large black trash bags with green stickers identifying the strain of marijuana to vehicles. Then, around 9:30 a.m. on May 24, 2019, Muessig was seen carrying a black backpack into the house.
About 40 minutes later, two more men arrived at the house and went inside.
Later, investigators said that Muessig and another co-defendant, Hector Rodriguez, carried two large boxes from the house and put them in a Dodge Ram parked in the next-door neighbor’s driveway.
After the Dodge pulled out, police pulled it over. Inside the boxes Muessig and Rodriguez had carried out, they found $400,000, the government said.
A subsequent search of the residence resulted in the discovery of boxes full of marijuana, packaging material, a vacuum sealer and money counter.
The marijuana weighed 404 pounds. There was an additional $5,012 seized from the residence, as well.
Muessig is facing a five-year mandatory prison sentence. However, there is a provision in federal court called the “safety valve” that would allow for a reduced sentence if he can meet several requirements, including proving that he was not a leader of the organization and that he did not use weapons or violence in his crimes.
If Muessig qualifies for the reduction, the advised prison term would be 30 to 37 months.
A slew of new stores are set to open at Westmoreland Mall, including two that previously shuttered at the Hempfield site.
Charlotte Russe and Christopher & Banks, which previously occupied storefronts at the mall, will be joined by locally owned Neecs Sneaks and Rock Bottom jewelry store.
The announcements come after the mall for several years lost tenants, with 10 empty storefronts in 2019. The decline was part of a national trend that continued through the covid-19 pandemic, leading to the closure of thousands of stores — including Charlotte Russe and Christopher & Banks.
During the pandemic in 2020, more than 12,000 stores closed nationwide, according to CoStar Group, which tracks data for the real estate industry.
Now, some of those stores are making a comeback.
Charlotte Russe in March 2019 announced the closure of all of its stores, including five in the Pittsburgh region. That same month, the company was purchased by YM Inc., a Toronto-based clothing manufacturer. By April 2019, officials announced 100 Charlotte Russe stores would reopen.
At Westmoreland Mall, Charlotte Russe is expected to open next spring, said Stacey Keating, spokeswoman for CBL Properties, which owns Westmoreland and Monroeville malls. The store will reopen in its previous storefront on the upper level of the former Sears wing.
Millers’ Prom and Formal Wear, which opened in mid-January after moving from its location in Greensburg, currently occupies the space. Store officials said they are moving to first floor of the Macy’s wing where Dressbarn was located.
Christopher & Banks filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in February and began closing more than 400 stores nationally, including the Westmoreland Mall and Pittsburgh Mills locations. The store is slated to reopen in its former storefront at Westmoreland Mall, according to a sign posted outside the location.Keating said the store will open in early December.
The storefront is occupied by Knockerball Run, which will move to the second floor of the former Sears wing in a storefront previously occupied by Flix Up, a selfie studio.
Neecs Sneaks, which opened in Greensburg last year, will move into the former GNC storefront on the second level of the Macy’s wing.

Break happened early Tuesday morning.
The water main break initially happened a little after 12:30 a.m. Tuesday and it took about two hours for crews to get the water shut off.
It was not immediately clear if any customers were impacted by the water main break.

Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont announced Monday that he will not seek reelection next year, opting to retire from the Senate.
Leahy, 81, is the longest-serving sitting senator, having been in office since 1975 following his election in 1974. He is currently the president pro tempore of the Senate.
“I have reached the conclusion that it’s time to put down the gavel,” Leahy said. “It is time to pass a torch to the next Vermonter who will carry on this work for our great state. It’s time to come home.”

New Castle police are working to locate a 16-year-old girl they said was “taken against her will” from her home Sunday night. Criminal charges of kidnapping and other related offenses have been filed against Hobbs’ ex-boyfriend.
According to police, Haylee Hobbs was last seen wearing a gray hoodie and blue and purple boxers.
Police ask that anyone with information on the whereabouts of Hobbs or Jones call the New Castle City Police Department at 724-656-9300.

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, Pa. —
One person is dead and seven people are injured following a multi-vehicle crash in Washington Township, Westmoreland County, Sunday evening.
Police say Zeth Reber, 22, of Washington Township, was pronounced dead on scene after a head-on-type collision at Route 380 east of Route 780 around 4:37 p.m.
Police say Reber was traveling in a Honda Civic in the eastbound lane of Route 380 and another driver named Abigail Jones, 23, of Carlisle, was traveling the wrong way in a Dodge Caravan — west — also in the eastbound lane.
Police say Jones’ car struck Reber’s car in a head-on type collision.
Seven occupants of the Dodge Caravan including the driver was transported to Forbes Regional Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
The road was closed both ways on Route 380 between Route 780 and Route 66 as state police CARS unit conducted an accident reconstruction of the scene.
The investigation is ongoing.

A fourth man is arrested after a taxi explodes outside a Liverpool hospital on Remembrance Sunday.
An explosion outside Liverpool Women’s Hospital on Remembrance Sunday has been declared a terror incident by police.
A taxi exploded and was engulfed in flames just before 11:00 GMT at a drop-off zone near the entrance, killing the passenger and injuring the driver.
The cabbie, named locally as David Perry, was declared a hero by Liverpool Mayor Joanne Anderson for locking the suspect inside the vehicle.
Four men have been arrested in the city under the Terrorism Act.
Head of Counter Terrorism Policing North West, Russ Jackson, said the taxi passenger appeared to have made an “improvised explosive device” which caused the blast.
The man’s motivation was “yet to be understood”, he added.

Freeport hasn’t had a police officer on duty since Nov. 3, when the newly hired police chief quit at the end of his first shift. With no officers left on the force, state police are handling calls in the 1.3-square-mile borough of about 1,700 residents, officials said.

Retired Plum police Sgt. Matthew Feldmeier, 58, was hired as chief Nov. 1 and was sworn in that night by Mayor James Swartz Jr. He was the only applicant for the $53,500-a-year job.
Swartz said Feldmeier worked his first shift during the day on Nov. 2 and participated in interviews that evening to fill two open positions for police officers.
But when the borough secretary arrived at the borough building the following morning, she found the chief’s badge, office keys and a handwritten letter of resignation stating that he was leaving “to pursue other interests,” the mayor said.
Several telephone and text messages seeking comment from Feldmeier were not returned.
The only other police officer on the borough’s roster is Terry Lucas, a part-timer who also works as a police officer at a hospital in Pittsburgh.
But the mayor said Lucas hasn’t worked a shift for the borough in nearly five months because of the demands of his other job.
Swartz said Feldmeier gave him no indication that he was planning to resign.
The decades-old deteriorating parking garage attached to Excela Westmoreland Hospital in Greensburg will soon close and be demolished because it is too costly to maintain and repair, a city official said.
“It’s reached the end of its useful life,” Mayor Robert Bell said of the J. Edward Hutchinson Parking Garage, which is connected to the hospital by an enclosed walkway over Shearer Street. Deteriorated steel girders are clearly visible at the front of the garage.
An engineering study revealed that it would cost more than $2 million to perform the needed preventive maintenance, the mayor said. And that work would only extend the useful life of the garage for another three to five years, Bell added.
“We can’t justify that expenditure,” he said, noting the city spent $1 million a few years ago to make repairs at the garage. “You just don’t want to keep doing that.”
Greensburg will seek funding to demolish the 42-year-old garage, Bell said.

A plane crash on an island off the coast of Michigan killed four passengers and left a child as the lone survivor.
The plane took off from Charlevoix on the state’s lower peninsula and headed for Welke Airport when it crashed on Beaver Island at around 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.
The identities of the passengers weren’t immediately released, and no clear cause was identified immediately following the crash, but on Sunday passengers were identified as realtor Mike Perdue and residents Kate Leese and Adam Kendall, who were developing a vineyard in the area, the Petoskey News-Review reported.

PITTSBURGH — One person was arrested after a car crashed into a house Saturday night in Pittsburgh’s Hill District.
Just before 10:30, police were tracking a stolen vehicle when the driver veered into the back side a home in the 300 block of Elmore Street, public safety officials said.
No one was injured and the driver was arrested at the scene.
Fire and PLI also responded to the crash to inspect the damage.The investigation is ongoing.
