Pittsburgh Weather: Cold Front Will Rewind Weather Pattern Back To Winter – CBS Pittsburgh

Plan on a gray, wet day with temperatures closer to the seasonal averages for the first part of the day. A cold front will then throw a major changeup our way. It will rewind our weather pattern back to winter.

That colder air will interact with a secondary push of moisture. This will cause it to mix with, then change over to snow.

Some snow will even accumulate. These accumulations will be mostly on grassy and elevated surfaces, as we have been efficiently warming that top layer of soil with recent sunshine and 70-degree temperatures.

When all is said and done, most of the Pittsburgh-metro area will see under an inch accumulate, thanks to the aforementioned melting.

Areas in the ridges and north of I-80 will likely pick up more thanks to enhancement from Lake Erie.

‘It looks like the end of the world’: China’s worst sandstorm in a decade chokes Beijing

“This is the most intense sandstorm in China in the past 10 years,” China’s National Meteorological Center said Monday.

China’s capital city woke up to yellow skies Monday as the biggest sandstorm the country has seen in a decade swept through it, sparking new health fears.

The thick brown dust shrouded Beijing‘s iconic landmarks, including the Forbidden City, and downtown skyscrapers at times disappeared from view, enveloped by clouds of sand.

The visibility in the capital was reduced to less than 1,000 meters (3,300 feet), China’s English-language news agency CGTN reported, forcing residents who dared venture outside to wear improvised headgear to protect their faces.

Traffic was snarled and more than 400 flights out of the capital’s two main airports were canceled, The Associated Press reported.

‘Impossible travel conditions’ as spring storm delivers historic snow and severe storms – CNN

(CNN)Severe weather, historic snowfall and flash flooding are forecast for the next few days in areas of the central United States, from the Rockies to the Mississippi River Valley.

This storm system begins with its first threat over the Rockies, as intense bands of snowfall will dump feet of powder across Colorado and Wyoming.
Dangerous travel conditions will exist across portions of interstates 25, 70, and 80 — so drivers are urged to use extreme caution.
“Very difficult to impossible travel conditions expected across all of southeast Wyoming and the Nebraska panhandle,” the National Weather Service (NWS) office in Cheyenne, Wyoming, said Thursday. “Expect extended periods of whiteout conditions, low visibilities, and possible power outages.”

But that’s just one side of the system. The south and eastern sides of the system — which will be pulling in warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico — will be fueling several days of severe storms, with the possibility of tornadoes.

Nearly 20 million people will be under the threat for severe storms at some point Friday through Sunday across half a dozen states with damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes.

In addition to all that, the cold front will eventually stall across the Southern Plains, resulting in heavy rain over much of the same region throughout the next couple of days which will lead to flooding.

Family of 11-year-old boy who died in Texas deep freeze files $100 million suit against power companies – ABC News

Texas power providers Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) and Entergy Corporation have been hit with a $100 million lawsuit accusing them of gross negligence in the death of a child whose family suspects he suffered hypothermia when they lost electricity and heat in their mobile home during a historic cold snap.

The mother of 11-year-old Cristian Pineda filed the wrongful death lawsuit in Jefferson County District Court, alleging the utility giants “put profits over the welfare of people” by ignoring previous recommendations to winterize its power grid, which sustained an epic failure last week and left more than 4 million customers without heat and electricity as temperatures in some parts of the state plunged to single digits.

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Heavy snowfall blanketed the Acropolis and other ancient monuments in Athens, caused power cuts and halted COVID-19 vaccinations in the Greek capital on Tuesday as the weather brought many services across the country to a standstill.

While western Europe got some respite from winter weather, temperatures plunged in the southeast of the continent and storms also battered Turkey.

The snow, an unusual sight in the Greek capital of more than 3 million residents, also stopped most public transport services. Hundreds of toppled trees downed power cables, causing blackouts in several suburbs.

Slow snow removal causes frustration in some Pittsburgh neighborhoods | TribLIVE.com

In some Pittsburgh neighborhoods, snow doesn’t create a winter wonderland. It creates treacherous road conditions that too often go unplowed and untreated.

Following Wednesday night’s snowfall, City Councilman Anthony Coghill received five or six calls from residents who were concerned about snow-covered roads.

“That’s a walk in the park,” Coghill said, explaining that he received closer to 200 calls complaining about road conditions following a snowstorm last Christmas.

“I get phone calls every time it snows,” he said.

Coghill represents the 4th District, which encompasses Beechview, Bon Air, Brookline, Carrick, Mt. Washington and Overbrook — all hilly neighborhoods. Snow removal, he said, is a major concern for his constituents.

“I know it’s a problem,” he said. “We just need more resources.”
